Eat Keto or Low Carb? Like Dining Out? This Post Will Help…

Eating Keto/Low Carb sure has its appeal, though one trip out to eat can have you thinking, “Wait, what can I order?” or “Am I paying more but getting less?”. 😮 Save yourself the stress because you CAN eat low carb on the cheap at popular restaurant chains while still ordering off the regular menu!

In addition, warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club often offer discounted restaurant gift cards! Even better, you can stack the discounted gift cards with sales and special offers to score some seriously BIG savings on yummy food!

This Keto dining out guide outlines where to go, what to order, and how to SAVE! Read on for our comprehensive list of quick Keto/Low Carb eats! 🍔 Please keep in mind that pricing will likely vary a bit depending on where you live.

Quick tip Download a nutrition app like Carb Manager so you can track net/total carbs on-the-go! It has nutritional information for dishes at popular restaurants along with a barcode scanner for packaged foods.

Five Guys

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the app and website
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Turn on “special deals and rewards” in the Contact Preferences under Profile & Settings within the app.

What to order: Collin’s favorite order is a bacon cheeseburger on a bed of lettuce with jalapeños & grilled onions 😋. You can customize any burger order with your own favorite toppings and condiments and ask for the patties to be on a bed of lettuce or in a lettuce wrap! Though coupons are a bit hard to find here, add more value to your order by asking for extra cheese and bacon – it’s free!

Price: $7.99 (Bacon Cheeseburger)

HATE lettuce wraps? The Flying Dutchman is for you!

  • Online ordering?  No
  • Smartphone app?  iOS
  • Coupons / Rewards?  No

What to order: Choose any burger you’d like but be sure to specify you want it “Protein Style” for a lettuce wrap. Or order the Flying Dutchman where the burger patties are used as the bun – make sure to include any extra toppings you want in the burger such as grilled onion, lettuce, and condiments since the order alone is strictly for the meat and cheese.

Prices: $2.05 (Protein Style) & $2.10 (Flying Dutchman)

Red Robin

Red Robin Royalty = so many FREE burgers including a FREE burger on your birthday! 🍔

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the website
  • Smartphone app?  The company has temporarily discontinued the app and will re-release at some point during 2018
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through their royalty program that sends offers via email or SMS. Sign up for Red Robin Royalty for $20 towards your 6th visit (within the first 5 weeks of joining), military discounts, every 10th item FREE, FREE burger reward with every Gourmet Burger Bar purchase, other exclusive surprise rewards, and a FREE burger on your birthday!

You can even sub out the beef for grilled chicken or a turkey burger! When dining in, ask for bottomless side salad over the carb-loaded fries and be sure to give the server your phone number registered to your Red Robin Royalty account. In some locations you can also enter it on the table top device so you get credit in your account for you visit.

If you’re looking for a more low-cost meal, order their Wedge Salad for only $5! It’s a massive chunk of iceberg lettuce topped with bacon bits, tomatoes, bleu cheese crumbles, ranch, and onion straws, though you’ll want to ditch the onion straws to make it keto-friendly.

Price: $11.29 (Wedgie burger with side salad) & $5 (Wedge salad)

ALL the sandwiches can be converted to salads!

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the app and website
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, check “Send me offers and promotions from Subway” upon signup on the App or visit their website to opt in for email/SMS promotions!

What to order: You know Subway for its sandwich menu, so just pick your favorite and ask for it to be converted into a hearty salad! Try a Chicken Bacon Ranch Melt converted to a salad. You’ll actually save a little $$ since the salad is $1.25 LESS than the footlong sandwich version! Keep in mind when ordering through the app, salads are listed as their own category.

Price: $6.74 (Chicken Bacon Ranch salad)

Sandwiches for $1, BOGOs, and more – the McDonald’s app is FULL of great deals on your favorites!

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the app
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, they frequently offer coupons and promotions through the app, like $1 off sandwiches, BOGO sandwiches, and sandwiches for $1!

What to order:  Sign up and download the McDonald’s app to unlock the “Any sandwich for $1” offer among many other promos the app is currently running. Add the deal to your cart and you’ll be prompted to select the sandwich you’re craving – there are SO MANY options! Remove the bun and add extra lettuce to your order, along with modifying any condiments and extras that you’d like. When you proceed to checkout, your sandwich will reflect the $1 sandwich promotion! And the mobile order pick up is so convenient – either drive-thru and give the attendant your code or pull up to a curbside pickup spot and check in via the app. You can also go inside to check in the order, but where’s the fun in that. 😉

Price: $1.00 (Pico guacamole artisan grilled chicken sandwich)

Another tip comes from Stacy who utilizes ANOTHER promotion offered in the app!

“When I do fast food, I just get the sandwich and drink which saves $$ there. I hate to admit it but McDonald’s is one of my faves. They have an avocado grilled chicken sandwich that is pretty yummy without bread and they keep offering a BOGO deal on their app. So I basically get two chicken breasts with some lettuce, avocado, and pico for around $5. Not a terrible deal for on-the-go.” – Stacy at Hip2Save

Buffalo Wild Wings

Skip the sauce and get delicious dry seasonings for KETO chicken wings!

What to order: If you find yourself here or at another sports bar, traditional chicken wings are a surprisingly great keto option! Buffalo Wild Wings offers a few different low-carb dry seasonings, like Buffalo, Lemon Pepper, or Salt & Vinegar. They also have a Chipotle BBQ seasoning which is lower-carb but watch out for some added sugar.

Through their Blazin’ Rewards program, you earn points with every dine-in visit or online takeout order. While there are plenty of lower point options for drink and side redemption, save your points until you rack up 1,100 to redeem a snack size order of traditional wings.

Price: $7.29 (Snack size traditional wings)

  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through their SmashClub. Get $1 off your order when you download the app along with a FREE entree with side purchase just for signing up!

What to order: Don’t feel you have to order beef given this restaurant’s name. After signing up for their SmashClub, you’ll find a FREE entree with side order offer waiting for you in your account. Take advantage by stopping in, ordering a side salad, and you’ll get a sandwich for FREE! I opted for a salad with ranch and the Bacon Avocado Club with Grilled Chicken on a lettuce wrap but you can choose to your heart’s delight!

Price: $2.99 (Bacon Avocado Club with side salad using promo)

Jimmy John’s

Plain Slim Unwiches: delicious, keto, and under $5!

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the app and website
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Not through app or website – try Food Coupons iOS or Android!

What to order: Choose your favorite sandwich and ask for it as an “Unwich” so the fillings come in a lettuce wrap – Jimmy John’s sandwich crafters will wrap the whole thing with sandwich paper making it one of the more diner-friendly lettuce-wrapped sandwiches!

While the J.J.B.L.T is recommended as a keto option, you’re really just getting a lot of lettuce and some bacon. For an easy way to save, order one of their “Plain Slims” which is a sandwich with simply meat and cheese but have it as an unwich. You lose the bread, gain the lettuce, add the free mayo packets, and you’ve got a keto sandwich for under $5!

Price:  $5.99 (J.J.B.L.T) & $4.49 (Plain Slim)

Shoot for a 3-pointer: meat and a topping for $5!

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through app and website
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through the app or mobile mailing list

What to order: Since a bowl typically includes mostly non-keto friendly items, go for a 3-Pointer! Order a bowl with meat (worth 2 points) + one side, like cheese, sour cream, pico, or lettuce (worth 1 point) = which gives you a discounted bowl for only $5! While this order is recognized throughout ALL Chipotles, some cashiers might not look at the bowl to realize it is in fact a 3-pointer so you may need to give them a friendly reminder when checking out.

Price: $5

Carl’s Jr. / Hardee’s

Keto options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

  • Online ordering?  No
  • Smartphone app?  No
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through the email list on either the Carl’s Jr. or Hardee’s website

What to order: If you’re stopping by before 10:30am, their breakfast options are a must have! Try a Steak and Egg Burrito without the tortilla and you’ll get a nice breakfast bowl packed with protein. For lunch, pick your favorite burger or sandwich and “low-carb it” to have the fillings wrapped in lettuce!

They seem to have terminated their rewards programs though you can still sign up through their email list for coupons and promotions.

Price: $3.99 (Steak and egg burrito) & $4.59 (1/3lb. Original Thickburger low-carb)

Earn stars through the rewards programs for FREE drinks!

  • Online ordering?  Yes, through the app
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through the app, email list, and their rewards program!

What to order: Get your caffeine fix by ordering your coffee with heavy cream – this is one of the few coffee shops that offers heavy cream! For those who like a little sweetness, ask for sugar-free syrup for some added flavor. If you’re ordering an iced coffee however, be sure to specify you’d like it “unsweetened” otherwise they will add in their classic sweetener syrup.

Starbucks Rewards members score 2 stars per $1 spent, a free Birthday Reward, free In-Store Refills and more! When you rack up enough stars in their loyalty program for a free drink or treat, opt for something a bit more decadent, such as a venti latte made with heavy cream. YUM!

Price: $2.25 (Grande Coffee)

Get a double Stack for less 💵 or a Dave’s Single BOGO for more 🍔

  • Online ordering?  Yes, for select locations on their website and app
  • Smartphone app?  iOS and Android
  • Coupons / Rewards?  Yes, through their website and app

What to order: There’s a pretty simple way to hack the menu at Wendy’s without having to use any loyalty programs or promos. Order a Double Stack with lettuce, tomato, swap the ketchup for mayo, and ditch the bun. This $2.59 Double Stack is the same as the $4.59 Dave’s Single, other than having 2 smaller patties in place of the larger one. What’s even better, adding applewood smoked bacon to the Double Stack will only cost 60¢ extra, rather than the 75¢ it takes to add to the Dave’s Single. All that said, if you’re really set on a Dave’s single, use the BOGO sandwich offer available in their app!

Price: $2.59 (Double Stack) & $4.59 (Dave’s Single – for TWO if you use the BOGO promo!)

Want FREE Chick-fil-A? Stake out store openings or dress like a cow 🐄 !

Wash it all down with their housemade diet lemonade simply made with lemon juice, Spenda, and water.

Do you LOVE Chick-fil-A enough to want to eat it all the time? Find out if any locations are opening near you and stake out the opening. 6. Melissa

Thanks! I️ am going to have to print this out. One idea I️ have for McDonald’s is order the sausage egg McMuffin and just eat the egg and sausage. I️ feed the muffin to the birds.

    • Stacy

Lol. I do this, except I feed the bread to my kiddos. They love those little syrupy breads.

There’s a Keto Summit going on now online, this week and next, which started yesterday but Fridays are encore days where you can listen to the whole week’s interviews. They have a few speakers each day and you can listen for free but just for that day’s speakers. Here’s the site if interested to sign up for free: Interesting to hear other people’s experiences with this way of eating. There’s a Facebook closed group for it if you want to join that as well.

  11. Meredith

Oh forgot to add that doing Keto I mostly eat at home, but my husband and I went to Applebee’s the other day so I “saved up” some carbs and got a chicken Caesar salad (the *small* one as the large had more carbs per their nutrition info online), no croutons and a side of “loaded” broccoli – broccoli with sour cream, cheese, and butter on top Yum Yum!
If in doubt about what to order anywhere Google is your friend! I’m also so excited that many recipes can be made keto style, with some substitutions of course.

  12. Liane

This is great! Thanks for sharing but I don’t quite get the order for Chipolte. Do they have a “3 pointer” on the menu?

  13. Christy

Thank you sooooo much! I am not even doing KETO at all, but trying to eliminate grains and gluten from our entire family’s way of eating. This is really helpful for all of us!!!!

  14. Amber

    Good tips 😊

  15. zombie_jane

Thanks. I am about to start Keto living and was concerned about when I eat out how to order.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome!

  16. 50ShadesofLipstick

I don’t follow a keto diet, but I do follow a slow carb one. This is very helpful…thanks!

  17. Natalie

I don’t understand the Chipotle option: It says that meat is 2 points and then adding lettuce, cheese or sour cream is one point, but the picture shows meat, lettuce and cheese, so wouldn’t that be 4 points?

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Natalie! So the 3-Pointer technically is not on the menu, but it is a legitimate order that all Chipotle locations abide by. It can be hard for a cashier to tell if a bowl is a “3-pointer” since they’re not constantly looking for it but giving them a friendly reminder when cashing out should do the trick!

      • Natalie

Thanks so much for the response, Emily. I’m still not understanding, as wouldn’t the meat be 2 points, the lettuce 1 point and the cheese 1 point, adding to 4 points? Thanks!

        • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Right – so you would choose a meat (2 points), and then choose between lettuce, cheese, sour cheese, pico… really whatever you prefer! Those are each 1 point. I have heard of people asking for cheese on the side (in hopes they would just waive the extra cost) but I wouldn’t recommend it. Hope that helps!

          • Jh

The problem Natalie is having is that the picture shows a 4 pointer. Meat, cheese, lettuce. It’s confusing.

  18. Jeannet

    Great post, thanks for sharing!!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Jeannet!

  19. Karen Ewing

Also at most fast food restaurants you can order JUST the patties and/or bacon off the side item menu. My Wendy’s sells the large patties for 1.20 each and burger king whopper patties $2 each. McDonalds also does this but I haven’t tried it. You can’t usually do it in the drive through and some of the employees look at you funny the first time but so many people have special diets or avoid gluten that most are used to the request. Just another way to save $$.

  20. KED

Thanks for this post. We are all trying to eat healthy even at fast food places!

  21. 🌺 Nolee 🌺

Thank you! I’ve been Keto for a month. The first couple weeks were kinda rough, but I’m feeling fabulous now. And the pounds are seriously melting off. I eat when I’m hungry. I never starve. And the only exercises I’m doing are push-ups and planks. I also use to get headaches at least once a week. Never noticed how many I had. But I definitely notice the absence. I haven’t had a headache in three weeks. I’ve never been this happy or excited about a diet. 💁🏻‍♀️

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh awesome! You’re very welcome! Great that you have been feeling so much better since beginning Keto! Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience with us!

  22. Birdiegirl

This is the absolute best list for eating out keto that I have come across. Definitely saving this!! Thanks!!

  23. Brandi

Went Low Carb for my New Year’s Resolution & lost 15 pounds this month!

  24. twizzdmob

The low carb chicken club at Hardee ismy jam!

  25. yonawrites

Also, Tuesdays is Buy 1 Get 1 Free Boneless wings at Buffalo Wild Wings…so you can get double the order.

    • jodie

Boneless wings aren’t keto friendly…they have all that breaded coating. You have to order the regular style wings :/

  26. Lisa

Hubby does keto & always takes off the buns. He also loves McDonald’s eggs with cheese & sausage patties. Great for on the go!

  27. DeAnna

Just a heads up, the diet lemonade from chic-fil-a still has 14 carbs in it because of the lemon juice. I didn’t realize till someone told me. It’s apparently because of the lemon juice.

  28. Katie

I would just like to point out that if you’re viewing the post via an app, the tiny version of the main photo on the app feed actually looks kind of gross. Like oozy green stuff. BUT I read the post headline and wanted to check it out anyways. What awesome ideas! Thanks!!!

  29. Jennifer L.

I LOVE this blog, long time follower here for the deals. But am I the only one totally repulsed by these Keto posts? It’s starting to feel a little bit forced. How can anyone eat like this on the regular? I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

    • Stacy

It’s not for everyone, but it is a way of eating that helps many. It’s a very healing diet. It basically boils down to meat & veggies. You’re just getting rid of carbs, especially sugars, which are not essential to any diet. I’ve been eating a ketogenic diet for 8 months. It’s stopped my headaches, constant lethargy, and as an added bonus, I’ve lost 45 pounds. I don’t think H2S is trying to force it down anyone’s throat, but it’s something the team is knowledgeable about and can help those who have chosen this way of eating. I don’t think any of the posts try to convert you to keto, just help those who already are eating that way.

  30. Moni B.

OMGGG I love u guys for providing this for us!!! *THE BEST POST EVERRRRR*, I’m tot serious! It’s always awesome snagging deals on tangibles/things thru H2S, but there’s nothing more precious than improving our health and saving time. Those intangibles are irreplaceable! Thank u!!! 👍👍👍

  31. Diana

Thank you for posting all the keto deals, recipes and tips!!

  32. mdub

It’s Chipotle… you can just order a salad and get or not get whatever you want.

  33. Mel

Great post! We’re trying to cut down on carbs and sugar and this is a tremendous help!

  34. isabella

Love your keto posts!!! Thank you so much for yet another one!!! I definitely don’t think these posts seem “forced” as someone else mentioned. If you don’t like the post, just scroll by. It helps so many other people.

  35. sharon starr

never tried keto, but all these look yummy. May have to try it out, thank you Collin.

  36. camichigan

Son and DIL have done well on keto. I think it’s time for me to try it. These sandwiches look yummy!

  37. Laura

careful with McDonalds cheese! They use processed american cheese so it has 2-3 carbs depending on what you get! Its pretty low but if you arent aware those little bits can add up. Mcdonlds website has a great nutritional calculator for their food to check out first!

  38. Jane

    Sadly nothing vegetarian 😭
