Thanks! I’ve been hoping to catch a good deal on these for a while. These will be great for cub scouts and family camping this Spring and Summer. They were $4.99 for me with tax!

I am not familiar with grits. Do you eat this for breakfast or as a side dish? Thank you.

      Official Southerner here, Kim!

Though they’re most often served with breakfast, they’re appropriate any time of the day. If you’re familiar with polenta, they’re *similar,* but not exactly the same. I find them to be something you either love (I love them) or hate.

It’s hard to describe them in a way that makes them sound as good as they are, but they’re a thick, corn-based dish — think of a thick gravy or soupy mashed potato consistency — but made from cornmeal. They’re fantastic by themselves, with a little butter, with a little (or a lot of cheese), with bacon, with a fried egg on top, with spicy shrimp, with pork barbecue (or even with all of these things together!)

The Quaker ones aren’t too bad for an instant variety — we prefer the plain butter ones, since they leave you with plenty of options to dress them up as you like.

I like to make the Quaker ones with just a little less water than they call for, then let them stand for an extra few minutes before serving, as they thicken up and have more body and better texture.

You can have them as a side dish. Grits are a staple here in the south. A popular dish made with them is Shrimp & grits, but you’d probably not use instant grits for it. Our family eats these as breakfast though. Hubby and kiddos like the plain ones with sugar, but I prefer the buttery cheesy ones and add extra (real) cheese. 🙂

        Thank you Holly and Holly!
