LOVE freetaxusa. Been using it for 4 years now.
    No complaints!!

    • jen

Me too. I love them. Usually I can find a coupon code online that drops a buck or two off the fee to file state too. 🙂

    • Geo

Same here. Use FreeTaxUSA to file federal for free. Then we mail our state form to avoid the $12.95 charge. The form is very easy to complete yourself.

  2. Michelle

I will have to look into some of these for next year… tax act was $62 for fed and state this year… a lot more than in years past!!!

    • Kristy

That’s exactly why I switched to credit karma!! Taxact used to be $15 and it just kept getting more expensive. Credit karma is pretty easy to use. I’d say about the same as taxact.

  3. Taya

I did credit karma! Waiting for the state to be accepted federal was accepted right away!

State (MN) took longer for me than federal as well. I did file on a Friday though so that might me why. My state refund was sent 2 days before my federal was sent but I already have federal in my bank account. Still waiting on state…..

      • Chrissy

I read on our state’s page that state refund would not start until 2/27 to help crack down on fraud.

        • Ann

Is that MN? Because my refund was processed and sent to my bank. Just haven’t seen it in my account yet.

        • Laura

I talked to my tax person and federal isn’t issuing refunds until after the 27th due to combating fraud. So I am not understanding why people are getting federal when even on the website it states the earliest you will receive the refund is the 27th. State can take up to 21 days after filing if you e- file.

          • Kristy

They are holding refunds if you claimed an Additional Child Tax Credit or an Earned Income Tax Credit. People who didn’t claim those credits are eligible to get their taxes earlier.

      • Taya

I’m in MN too did mine 2 days ago I think.

        • Ann

MN is usually so quick for me. I don’t know why it’s taking so long to deposit.

          • Jessica

I am in Minnesota.. I got my state back already, just waiting on my federal. I filed about a week and a half ago

Turbo Tax Absolute Zero has some limitations (more than 1 rule me out):
    Made less than $100,000
Don’t own a home or rental property
    Didn’t sell investments
Don’t own a business or have 1099-MISC income
Don’t have any major medical expenses

I’ve used for years. It’s free for federal (even for more complicated returns) and doesn’t constantly request that I upgrade to their paid service.

Benefit Bank offers free federal and state tax filing for residents of North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Married filing jointly income limit is $95,000. Single income limit is $65,000.

    Love that expression, Lina! Ha!

I have been doing taxes for a long time and always loved taxact but too expensive now with a schedule C. Used credit karma this year and it might be fine for simple returns but for more complex issues, it was awful. Their support couldn’t even help despite my telling them exactly what I needed. Was simply cut off twice from support and then got random answers via email. Purchased TurboTax download for $30 and it was awesome! Maybe better than taxact

Couldn’t agree more with Turbo Tax. Years ago we use to pay the price and get our taxes done. About 13 yrs ago my mom bought Turbo Tax and let me use it just to get an estimate of what are taxes would be like. We went to our tax preparer paid $250 (and that was with a $50 off coupon) and got the same outcome as Turbo Tax. So I’ve been using Turbo Tax ever since. Now my older children use it. Like I told them, “It’s so easy a caveman could do it”. LOL

  8. Chris

I filed my taxes on Janaury 26, got my Refund on feb 7. Turbo tax filed joint return. It was easy.

  9. Rocky

It was my first time using turbo tax this year and I loved it. I’ve been using a tax preparer and she charged me $100 but this year I got more money back with turbo tax

  10. Steph-B

We’ve been using a tax professional for about 7 years now, he charges us 250.00… however, we live in wi and work MN, so we have to files with two states and Federal.. we’ve made more back since he’s been preparing our taxes.

  11. Marie

First time using H & R Block More Zero. I e-filed both our State & Federal taxes for free, even with deductions. OMG, I can’t believe it. It was really free. HAPPY DANCE! Thank You!

  12. carter

I’m so happy I saw this post! FreetaxUSA was free for federal even with all of my 1099 forms. I usually use Turbo Tax and they wanted me to upgrade to premiere for $89 to file those forms. Credit Karma let me get through everything just to tell me they don’t support some of the forms. H&R block wanted me to pay $69.99 then one of the forms wouldn’t be available until next week! I’m so happy right now!

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yay! So glad we could help! 🙂

  13. Melody

And just remember, whatever service you use, to print and save a copy!!!

  14. Christina

I use FreeTaxUSA and always use Ebates and Swagbucks to get some cash back on my transaction. Might as well get free money!

  15. Anna

Thanks to Hip2Save team, I used the 50% off coupon for TaxAct when you posted it. I was only filing Federal (we own a business so I did like the 3rd option). I wanted to file VA state return myself using the’s online forms to avoid $22 fee and it was such a headache!!!

Even though I already submitted the federal return on TaxAct, it still let me go back and file VA state return on it (finished in about 30 minutes). Paid less than $50 for both and got tax refund this week! Thanks, Hip2Save team!
