Did you purchase any of these dog foods?

On February 16th, the J.M. Smucker Company issued a voluntary recall of select Gravy TrainKibbles ‘N BitsOl’ Roy, and Skippy canned/wet dog food because they may contain pentobarbital (a short-acting barbiturate). A full list of affected products can be found here.

The FDA determined that the levels found that the levels in the samples tested were not high enough to pose a pet health risk. However, the presence of any level of pentobarbital does not meet the J.M. Smucker Company’s quality standards so they issued the voluntary recall.

Note that while not being officially recalled, consumers who purchased the products listed can call the company at 1-800-828-9980, Monday through Friday 9:00AM – 5:00PM EST, or email at https://www.bigheartpet.com/Contact/ContactUs.aspx with any questions, concerns, or for a refund or replacement product.

Warning: Too good to be true?

    • Angelica

because some readers are being disrespectful saying that hip2save is posting to good to be true posts and that they should know better than to know it’s not legit.

      • Angelica

therefore it’s your decision whether you want to go through with it or not

Hi K! Sorry about that! That was actually an error and has been removed from the post. Sorry for any confusion with this.

That’s what I was wondering too?

  3. Jessica

Iโ€™m confused about the warning message at the bottom, I donโ€™t understand what it means.

Hi Jessica! Sorry for the confusion, that was an error. We have updated the post.

I think it means: good luck getting the company to give refunds.

I saw this on our local news. The drug they are talking about is a drug used to euthanize (put to sleep).

There is an extensive list. The company is not having a recall but itโ€™s your choice. But if you love your dog(s) please do what you think is right.

The question is how did the drug get in the food? Was it a malicious employee? (It’s a controlled substance and not easy to gain access to) Or is the company using euthanized animals as a source of protein in the food? I truly hope it isn’t the latter :/

You should read the article, it will answer your question.

There’s actually 3 ways: in addition to euthanized pets, zoo animals and horses are also put to sleep with this drug. Horse meat is the most likely source. If food contains “meal” — it’s carcasses thrown in a rendering vat and cooked down until unrecognizable.

Nutro and many other brands had this happen in the late 1990s too. The FDA found their food to be adulterated with this same drug. That’s when I stopped feeding Nutro and told them I’d never in my lifetime feed that brand again — and I haven’t.

(Cows, pigs and chickens aren’t put down using this drug. So it’s not using “bad” beef — it’s using something that’s *not* beef.)

I got a call from Kroger about this recall, and it said to return it to the store. It was a recording.

This is why I cook my dogs food at home! It is super simple in the crockpot and it costs fairly close to buying a premium can of dog food! Best part is I know everything that is in there! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I agree, I do the same except in the Instapot ๐Ÿ˜Š

Walmart just recalled Ol’ Roy for the same reason- they all use the same supplier who uses euthanized dogs and cats from the shelter in their food. It doesn’t make economic sense to feed a low quality food because you will just pay for it later in vet bills!

If you love your dogs please feed them better quality food than these brands, they’re really not the best… a lot of higher quality foods are becoming more affordable or available at great discounts when on sale or on sites like chewy,

Anyone who is buying these brands to begin with, please educate yourself on high quality foods. These are bottom of the barrel. Your fur baby deserves better.
