Interior Design on a Budget | Get these Farmhouse Looks for Less

Do you love the farmhouse look as much as we do?

It’s pretty hard to turn on HGTV and not see a renovation that doesn’t include farmhouse elements in their interior design – and retailers are paying attention.

The only problem? These rustic pieces typically come with higher price tags. 😳

During a recent shopping trip to Big Lots, we couldn’t help but notice the retailer has started curating  some seriously pretty and functional farmhouse home decor – and for prices which won’t break our budget. We were so excited, we couldn’t wait to share our favorite finds and tips so you can create your own little piece of southern chic heaven!

*Note that the prices listed are full retail price, though there’s a chance they could be marked down online or in-store. Even better, they often offer coupons that you can pair with these already great prices to save even more.

Start with unfinished, weathered, or barnhouse wood elements.

Probably the BIGGEST part of the farmhouse trend is using wood that looks like it was used in a farmhouse! It’s also what makes the style so approachable, since defects are totally welcome. 😍 The more character a piece has, the more it takes on that farmhouse charm.

How could you NOT be excited to work when you’re sitting at this beautiful desk!?

Stratford Rustic 5-Shelf Bookcase | $80

big lots wooden hanging shelf

Hanging Circle Shelf | $22
That unfinished, weathered wood – along with a slightly fraying hanging rope – just oozes farmhouse vibes! I’m eyeing this for my entry. #MailAndKeysPlease

Mix in some matte metals.

Aged wood, meet aged metal, another farmstead staple. This deliciously rustic accent has the coveted “pre-loved” look of something that’s withstood the test of time – all without ‘barn-find’ concerns like rusty metals and tetanus shots.

Get on board with shiplap.

If you’ve ever watched Joanna Gaines – even for just one minute – you’ve heard of shiplap. This board-by-board technique lends a classic finish to any farmhouse wall. Good news for you: instead of committing an entire wall to planks, you can opt for pieces mimicking the popular trend.

“So Blessed” Metal Word Wall Plaque | $12
This sign has it all in the farmhouse world! Distressed shiplap, “So Blessed”, and laser cut from galvanized metal.

Blend in textured fabric like linen or burlap.

My fav farmhouse find is those awesome metal rustic chairs that sell for anywhere between $50 to $100 each on several sites. Scored 4 chairs and 4 barstools for $190 TOTAL shipped from Amazon 😁

    • Jen O.

Would you be able to post the link to the bar stools you bought? I need some as well and don’t want to pay a fortune. Thanks!!

  2. Linda

Seems like I paid a lot more for a very similar basket at the Container Store. Some good deals here.

  3. Angela J

Love pretty much all of that, guess I will be “spending” my lunch hour at Big Lots this week. Thanks for the post.

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That’s certainly time well spent! Enjoy!

  4. Amanda

Haven’t been in Big Lots for a while– looks like I need to check it out soon! 🙂

  5. Jessica

Does anyone know when they will have the 20% ?

  6. Nikki Tovar

Aldi this week will also have similar item for even cheaper like the desk and bookshelf. Just check your local as.

  7. Dennis

You may wish to check the Aldi ad for March 7. They have a very similar looking desk for 59. 99 and very similar looking bookcase for 49.99 – in other words, quite a bit cheaper than Big Lots even.

    • Heather

Thanks for the heads up! I think I’ll check out aldi tomorrow.

  8. Stacy

Hobby lobby is hands down the best place to get farm house decor. That frequently have 50% off decor also! I redid my whole kitchen with new farmhouse and farm looking decor for under $200

  9. Sue

I also love Kirklands for their farmhouse decor. It’s not always the cheapest, but they have tons of variety and are constantly adding new things. In addition to Kirklands, I also have farmhouse decor from Hobby Lobby, Target, Kohl’s, Christmas Tree Shops, Home Goods, and Lakeside Collection. I will have to add Big Lots to the list. Many of my favorite pieces come from local craft shows and flea markets though!

    Awesome finds!

  11. Laurie Villotta

I have a small basement that I will be renovating. I am going to do shiplap on the walls and to cover a popcorn ceiling. It will be a coastal theme mostly white with light aqua accents. Thx for the info for the accessories.

  12. Stacie

I use Target, Amazon, Decor Steals and even Wal-Mart for Farmhouse Deals. If you can’t afford to buy it make it! Tons of DIY for Farmhouse Decor on Pinterest

  13. Delilah Pugsley

Also, Aldis has a farmhouse style desk that looks just like the one listed above for $59.99! They are selling them March 4th – 10th.
IT is called SOHL Furniture Exclusive Collection Writing Desk
