Hey There! It’s Erica – one of Collin’s sidekicks!

L-a-u-n-d-r-y. The seven letter word no mom wants to hear. I feel like if there is anything I struggle with in life, it is definitely laundry. Anyone else feel the same way?

A few months ago (possibly a little longer than that), I purchased this Honey-Can-Do Dual Laundry Basket to try and get myself a little more organized. I figured I’d put the lights on one side and the darks on the other… and boy, I was just going to start nailing my laundry loads like a pro!

Here’s the thing.

I don’t do that. And I’ll never do that. I am more of a lets just toss all the laundry into the washer, set it on cold-cold so the colors don’t bleed and hope for the best kind of mom! 😂

Now, the whole organizing laundry part of this hamper is fine. Nothing is wrong with it. The spaces are large, hold a lot and it definitely separates clothes. The staying organized and separating my colors issue is a personal issue of my own that I am pretty certain isn’t going anywhere.

Now, I really just don’t like the hamper though and here’s why…

FIRST, it is pretty large and I guess I am not a fan. When this hamper is full, it is very hard to move. Even for me, and I compete in national weight lifting competitions. LOL, not really. But for real.. it is very heavy.

Second, it doesn’t have handles. This makes it seem even more heavy because you have to grip the sides so hard to pull it to the laundry room. It’s like you need the HULK to help you get this hamper to the washer. If you have stairs in your house, forget it!!

Third, the cloth-lined bottom… it may have some serious mold spots.😱

I have two toddlers that are surprisingly good about tossing their clothes in the hamper all 45 times a day they change their clothes. Most of the time, these clothing items come off after the pool, a big yogurt spill, soiled pants, spaghetti dinner, USED Pull-ups/diapers (hate when I don’t catch these and they make it to the washer), etc. All of which sit at the bottom of the hamper. And you don’t have to forget about them for long before the bottom is just gross.

I am sure there will be comments about my nasty mold-growing hamper above and why in the world I still have this in my home. So let’s just knock those out right now and I’ll ask them myself…

  1. How can a hamper get this moldy?
  2. Why would a mom let that kind of mold in her home. Especially with two toddlers…
  3. Hmm… 🤔 Is she sure this hamper was bought just a few months ago?
  4. I mean, DUH! Wet towels + Cloth hamper = M-O-L-D
  5. That mom definitely does NOT do laundry everyday.
  6. Hopefully she at least knows how to coupon…

You’d be happy to know, now that I have saved all of you from purchasing this hamper (you’re welcome!), it’s finally made its way down the driveway and into the trash.

Peace out honey-can-do hamper… Hello mold-free home! 🤗

HIP2SAVE READERS!

Although I am not a fan of this hamper, I have not come across one that I love yet. Anyone have a recommendation on what would work for me? Please share!

I have a plastic hamper on wheels. I like that I can clean it easily with spray and a towel, or, a magic eraser if I need to. It has a lid, and the handle can extend a little. Honestly, it’s great. We’ve had this one for around 6 years, and the one before that for almost 10. They are pretty darn durable, and hold about two full sized washer loads of laundry.

    Lol JK

You gave it a go and it didn’t work. I just like the regular plastic ones with handles. Wipe clean with a Clorox wipe and it’s still brand new. Just don’t bang it around and it doesn’t get the scuff marks on it. I will never want a mesh and or cloth hamper. Like the one you had it just would not stay clean like the plastic ones

      Take judgements elsewhere.

I’m assuming you didn’t read the whole comment before you made your comment. 😧😧😧😧😧

And she didn’t read the article or she would have picked up on the quoting lol

Omg ,😁 I let you borrow my 25 year daughter she is a clean clean girl she washes by colors and folds clothes and no dirty clothes : her twin does laundry once a week / and my husband does his own laundry by colors 😘 no need for hampers – now when I was young and had the 4 girls ended up throwing clothes with mold or learn to air dry towels before putting them with dirty clothes – since we only did laundry once a week lived in apartments with no washer or dryer ,, oh 😲 those days good luck 🍀

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Oh wow… so crazy to think about Edy! And I definitely help from your daughter!! 🙂

  4. Judy Trac

    i wouldn’t buy this

  5. Svetla

I have a plastic with a lid from target. We toss the white/light colors in it and use the bathtub edge for the dark clothes (it just warms this way for our house). My preteen tosses everything in one of those collapsing containers (for toys I think?) and I separate everything. And having the laundry room on the second level helps too!
My only suggestion to you would be to grab only the clothes enough for one load, this way you don’t have to carry all the heavy clothes to the washer.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Great tips Svetla! Thanks so much!!

  6. Taryn

😂No worries on what anyone says. We are all here just trying to do our best. Plus my laundry story would make you look like a laundry Saint 😂😂 Laundry is my arch nemesis!!😳

    • Stacy

      Amen.

    • Angela V.

Totally agree! Thanks for keeping it real! 🙂

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Ba ha Taryn! I am right here with you! 🙂

  7. brooke

I have this hamper but DO NOT try and move it when full…it really is about the heaviest!! My 6 year old twins use it in their room and do pretty well with darks/lights going in each hole. I then have to just remove clothes out of it when doing laundry, so not a huge timesaver in that regard. My other hampers are BEAT UP and falling apart, so I do like the sturdy factor of this one as we’ve had it since they were babies… Good Luck on the hunt! 😃😃

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks much Brooke!! And I agree that it is pretty sturdy!

  8. Kylie

I’m totally guilty of missing a couple of diapers and washing them 😂 only to find an explosion of gel diaper funk all over the clothes 😝

    • Stacy

      Yep. Same here. Lol.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Oh man… it is THE WORST!!

  9. Amie

    Thanks for the smiles

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Aw, you’re so welcome Amie! 🙂

  10. Nicole

OMG! That is hysterical! Initially, I honestly thought from the pictures that it was a big cardboard box and this post was all a joke! Hahaha…glad I read the whole thing!

    • Cassie

Haha, I thought it was a cardboard box, too!

    • Stacy

      I did too!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

      LOL! Too funny! 🙂

  11. Lydia

Omg am I the only one that thought she was throwing laundry in a cardboard box from the photos ? Lol !

    • Jennifer

I thought so, too! I was like, “Why in the world did she buy a cardboard box?” lol Oh, burlap-type material, you should be on an optometrist’s exam!

      • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

        LOL! 😉

  12. Deb

I live in a very old house that has a laundry chute, with an access door right next to the bathroom on the second floor and another in my first floor kitchen. The laundry lands right next to my washing machine in the basement. My husband told me that they no longer built laundry chutes into homes because of the risk of fires traveling through them. Not happy about the fire risk, of course, but I do love the convenience of a laundry chute!

    • Amy

We had a laundry chute in our first very old home. It was literally a hole in the bathroom floor that dropped right on to the basement floor beside the washer and dryer (only through one floor/ceiling). We had to modify the opening to make it safe for our young kids, but man do I miss that thing!!

      • Deb

Our access doors are in the wall, not the floor. How scary to have a hole in the bathroom floor!

        • Kandice Williams

My parents have one of these. The access hole is in the closet floor. We were all older when we moved into it wasn’t an issue, but I would worry with littles.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Wow! A laundry chute sounds awesome!

  13. justme1

i keep a hamper for dh and me and then another one outside the kiddos room. I take both down every Friday and I put all the whites and undies in the washer first and get that load going. Then I throw the other colors out into piles on the laundry room floor. I started hanging all the clothes out to dry (to save money on electrical) and then I fold them and put them away once they are dry. This system has worked so well for me!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Sounds like a great system! Thanks so much for sharing with me! 🙂

  14. Sarah

I have my kids throw their wet/soiled clothes directly into my washer so they get washed as soon as possible and don’t get anything else wet/dirty!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

      SMART!!! 🤓

  15. Megann

You’re a mom. Moms get the laundry life. Loosing battle some days. I personally love doing laundry. It’s like therapy for me. But I’m kinda crazy like that!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Whoa!! I need some of your love for laundry, Megann! 🙂

  16. Any

I have this one for whites and a teal colored one for the colors. Easy to pull up and down the stairs with the handles and flexible sides. Can easily wipe it out too. Had wicker before that and was so happy when it finally bit the dust! https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Flex-Hamper/17126957

    • Cindy b

We use and love these, too!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks Any!! That looks PERFECT for me! I sure appreciate it!

  17. Tera

I thought it was a huge cardboard box! I was a bit confused…

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

LOL! It is almost the same color as cardboard. Ha!

  18. Tiffany

We have a couple of these hampers & they work well for us–but I don’t try to move them, so that may be why. I put the mesh hampers with handles inside & pull out the laundry that way. I also use a nylon bag inside my toddler’s hamper that helps with moisture. We also live in a pretty dry climate, too, so that may be why we haven’t experienced the mold issue. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hope you get some good recommendations to find what works best for you! ☺

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks so much Tiffany! And so happy it is working out for you! 🙂

  19. Jessica

I must be the only one, but I actually love doing laundry! I like that I can sit down during the kids’ nap, fold clothes, and watch TV without feeling like a slacker. I also love the way freshly clean clothes smell! Ahh, my favorite household chore. If only I could have someone clean my floors and I could do their laundry in exchange, my life would be made.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Wow Jessica! You’ve got it going on! I think that is my problem. I stand at the washer and dryer and fold… and there is just nothing fun about that. Maybe I should start folding while I watch a TV show, I think that would help!! Thanks so much! 😉

    • Lana

Laundry is my favorite chore, too. Fresh clean stacks of folded clothes make me very happy. I am with you on the floors and please send someone over to dust! All our kids are grown now and I do not miss washing sweaty clothes from teen aged boys one bit but I would still rather do laundry than anything else.

  20. Jamie

I stack 3 lampers. When one gets full, it goes down to laundry, leaving a fresh one to start filling. Easy to carry, clean, and no mold!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Smart – nice system Jamie! Thanks for sharing!

  21. MM

Love this one – light weight and the wires come off if you want to wash. But since it’s mesh, the clothes air out instead of creating mold.

  22. Ginger

I have 5 kids under 10. I do a small load daily it is easy. Laundry is not a problem here. Also the oldest 2 put away their own clothes, and the third child helps.

    • Silvia

If you don’t mind me asking…. are your water bill and electric bill very high? We are a family of 5 and I’m considering doing a small load everyday but I’m scared our bills will be crazy high… :/

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Good idea, Ginger! Thanks for sharing about what works for you!

  23. Emily

I actually feel like I have a pretty good handle on laundry. I keep two hampers together in each bedroom. One is for whites and the other for darks. I know you tried that method and it didn’t work for you, but I have been doing that for 15 years and it really works for us. Even the other family members are in on it!

I do not carry my hampers to the laundry room. If that were to happen, I’d end up with piles of clothes on the floor while I wait to empty the hamper that has clean clothes in it. I leave the hamper where it lives and I take the clothes to and from the laundry room in a laundry basket. When folding clothes, I put each person’s clothes into their own laundry basket for easy putting away.

I have this hamper from Target and I really like it. It is plastic, but looks like brown wicker. I keep the lid open to make putting clothes in it super easy. I keep two side-by-side and put colors in one and whites in the other. https://www.target.com/p/curver-style-60l-hamper/-/A-14917097?preselect=14509675#lnk=sametab

For laundry baskets. I really like the small square ones, but I ended up finding a great sale on normal rectangle ones. I bought five that match in order to sot everyone’s laundry in their own baskets and have baskets to spare. Because they’re all the same, they stack really nice when they’re not in use. I also have two foldable mesh ones for when the amount of laundry spills over. I REALLY like those. They’re VERY easy to carry up and down the steps and they fold away so small. When my plastic ones break, i’ll probably replace all of them all with mesh ones b/c instead of stacking when not in use, they’ll collapse super small and fit nicely behind the hampers along the wall. I bought a two-pack and I LOVE the smaller one. It is similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/PRO-MART-Deluxe-Laundry-Hamper-Rectangle/dp/B00KM0WAGU

I hope that helps. I like to run a load every night when I go to bed, then I flip it into the dryer in the morning before I go to work and start a second load. When I get home, I fold the first, dry the second, then before bed, when I’m starting the next load, I fold the second load.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Wow Emily!! I am REALLY loving the look and convince of the mesh ones! Thanks for taking the time to share your system. Super helpful!

“I am more of a lets just toss all the laundry into the washer, set it on cold-cold so the colors don’t bleed and hope for the best kind of mom! ”
You totally speak my language, hahahahaha!!
I bought a 4 pack of Espresso colored Sterilite plastic hampers on Amazon and love them! No mold (been there), easy to clean and looks nice.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

LOL!! Thanks for sharing! I definitely need to go plastic!

  25. J. Sweet.

Laundry is CRAZY!!! and you already have your hands full! thanks for the fun post! I have two almost adult kiddos. they do their own clothes! YAY!!!!
I have two small plastic baskets (from wal-mart) that I have for the master bedroom. One for me and one for my honey. No sorting of colors. just toss it in (on cold) and get with it. . .(my honey needs stronger/less smelly detergent so he gets “special” treatment/detergent)
Hurray for working at a clean home/family!! 🙂

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

You’re so welcome! Thanks so much for sharing your system!

  26. Donna

I use the shout color catcher sheets! I throw everything in together and one of those sheets and I never have to worry about colors bleeding!! Best thing since sliced bread!!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Oh that is awesome Donna! Thank YOU!

    • Bethany

I swear by those things! Shout Color Catcher and there’s a brand called Carbona Color Catcher that Ibotta sometimes has rebates for if you use that app.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing!

I am loving the looks of that one Sophie!! Thanks much!

I love this laundry sorter, This is just for my husband and I’s clothes. Darks, lights, and hand wash which I use the hand wash cycle of my machine. Towels go in a plastic basket and my kids have their own laundry basket and none of their clothes get sorted. I mean they all under 6 no need to sort.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

      Awesome!! Thank you s much!

  29. Erin

Ha ha–love the post, but I’m confused about what you want your hamper to do. Hampers don’t do anything–you do! I have one that’s a semicircular basket with an attached lid and a linen liner from Target many, many years ago that I love but it is only for collecting dry clothes. When I do laundry, I pull everything out, sort on the floor, and use a laundry basket for transporting to the laundry room. Hamper stays put in the bedroom. In the bathroom, I have a tall plastic laundry basket that is for dirty towels. It is tall, so I can dry wet/damp items along the rim before tossing them in the basket. It is nice because you don’t have to bend down to pick it up when you are ready to do laundry. I also have a small laundry basket in my kids’ rooms for their clothes. When my kids were toddlers, I did laundry frequently–nearly on a daily basis to avoid becoming overwhelmed with laundry. Now that they are older, I think it’s easier to wash each person’s laundry separately since it’s easier to sort and put away. Whites and underwear are done separately and I have a divided fabric hamper in the laundry room where I store them until there are enough for a load. Laundry is relentless!

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

It sure is!! Thank you so much for sharing your system with me Erin! I sure appreciate it!

  30. Ihearthip

I have a minimalist approach because I don’t really have a place to store a laundry basket, and I would need two of them- 1 for dirty 1 for clean. So, I just visit the hampers in everyone’s rooms, grab what I need out of them, and then carry my bundle to the washer and toss it in.

  31. Ktarty

We live in an apartment building with laundry down the hall–actually there’s a washer and dryer on every floor of the6 floor building, so we often take ours to multiple floors to do more than 1 load at a time. So we have always used bins on wheels. Ours are IKEA, now discontinued but similar to these: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50219299/. We have 1 for darks and 1 for lights in our bedroom. We keep a small plastic basket in my son’s room and when we are ready to do laundry sort his laundry into our hampers. We line the hampers with nylon bags that can be washed; we use those to carry clothes around if the hamper holds more than will fit in a washer or dryer.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing Ktarty!

  32. Laura

too funny. Everyone has their own hamper in our house, with a liner that can be tossed in the laundry. The hampers stay put, i don’t move them. Then I use a laundry basket to pull the clothes out, enough for 1 wash load. I try to do 1 load a day and then Sunday is all of the sheets and towels that have accumulated for the week.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Wow, that is awesome that the liners can be washed! VERY COOL!

  33. Jennifer

I love the IKEA pop up hampers that are 3.99 each. They are lightweight for carrying up and down stairs and are vented so less chance of mold. I bought colored ones for my sons’ yucky dirty clothes and white ones for clean clothes. They have handles so that also helps with carrying them. I have had mine for two years and they still look good which is amazing for the price.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Awesome… and I am LOVIN’ the $3.99 price too! 🙂

I have a lights/darks hamper from ALDI. Doesn’t have handles, but it’s super light and fits a good amount but not too much (which is a problem when my husband puts half of his clothes in the laundry after wearing them all for 5 seconds). I love it.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing Linda!

  35. sara

Hahaha this post just totally made my day. I can legit relate! I love H2S and how real it gets here… Moldy spots, dirty hair (the shower caps… LOL) and all. We have all been there whether we care to admit it. Let’s keep on keepin it real. 😍❤

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

LOL!! Thank you so much Sara!! We definitely get real around here and it is SO FUN! So happy you enjoyed the post!

  36. Marie

I love the oversized blue bags from ikea for my laundry 😃

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing Marie!

  37. Elizabeth

We use laundry basket in place of hampers, they are easily to carry to the washing machine

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing Elizabeth!

    • Kandice

Yep, here too. Why bother with separate hampers? We use plastic laundry baskets for storing and moving. Sorting s usually done in the closet then brought to the laundry room

  38. Kristen

We don’t have hampers, just laundry baskets. Fill it up and wash it when full, all colors together. Unless the clothes are brand new, everything can be washed together. Lots of articles about that you can look up. I can usually do a load a day this way. But if we aren’t home, just do an extra the next.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing your system Kristen! 🙂

  39. K3llyb

I also hate laundry very much and have to drag it around the house to get it to the machine so the only thing that’s worked fur me is the cheap pop up hampers with handles inside a bigger prettier hamper. It seems excessive but I can easily pull the pop up one out to drag to the machine. If you’re motivated to do so you can sort before it goes in the hamper…Like have a whites and dark and delicates but I’m not that kind of mom. lol the mesh eventually breaks apart so that’s why the sturdier hamper kind of houses it like how a garbage can holds it’s liner. I don’t have to look at the ugly laundry this way but it’s all contained.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Awesome!! Thank YOU so much for sharing!

  40. hellfiregainz

Family of 7. I have a similar contraption that would mold as well, except that I do 3-7 loads of laundry daily. My hamper is also empty at night so it has a good 6 hours to dry.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

WHOA! That is a lot of laundry! LOL!

  41. Kate

I seriously thought this was an early April fools post because It looks like a cardboard box. They need to make it looks nicer than that if I were to ever consider buying it. My kids are always tossing wet stuff in my ThirtyOne Stand Tall Bin that I use as my “laundry basket”. I have never noticed mold, even after discovering these wet items are in the basket and have probably been there for a week or more. This thirtyone bin is $50(yikes) and is made of polyester but you can host a thirtyone party to get this free or considerably cheaper. Also, I keep it in the laundry room between the washer and dryer so my kids have to bring their dirty laundry to the laundry room. That way I’m not dragging heavy, fulllaundry baskets from other rooms and my kids need to learn to help mommy by bringing their dirty laundry to the laundry room.

    • Erica (Silly Sidekick)

Wow! That seems like an awesome basket Kate! Thanks so much for sharing!

  42. Cindy

First I LUV Hip2Save! So, I see this article about laundry and I think I gotta read this. LOL. Forgive me for sounding really stupid. But, you know what I got outta this whole thing? Why am I (me) carrying my laundry hamper full back and forth? LOL Mold? NO biggie, lol. I’m just flabbergasted that I had Never even thought about one on wheels. I have Cancer & back problems and somedays its heavier than others. So, I read this whole thing and start reading responses and all I can think is why have I been carrying this hamper back and forth everyday. THANK YOU! I’m buying one with the telescoping handle and wheels TODAY! Great to learn from others. My back will thank you the first time I roll that laundry to the laundry room. 🙂

  43. Vanessa

I have one that I love. Not sure the brand but I think I bought it at Walmart over 6 Years ago. It’s on wheels, has three removable hampers. It’s holding strong Evan after moving a couple times plus daily use either putting clothes in, moving it around or banged around accidentally. Would love to add a pic for u but don’t know how too. Let me know your contact info so I can get a pic of it to u

  44. Tammy

I don’t have a whole lot of laundry anymore since it’s only hubby and myself so I don’t really have a nice hamper – just an old one I keep in the closet and then only have enough clothes that I can actually just carry an armful to the laundry room (because I do all my laundry on Friday nights); however, the best thing I’ve ever found to help with laundry is “Color Catchers” (from the makers of Shout!). You just throw a little sheet in the washing machine and you don’t have to separate your clothes at all! Nothing will run! You can have a load of whites and have something red in there and it won’t run at all – everything gets “caught” on that little sheet! I’ve never had anything bleed, ever. It’s amazing and I can’t do a load of laundry without using one of them now! 🙂
