Rewards for Target Shoppers?

Would YOU shop at Target more frequently if you could earn rewards for your purchases – with NO credit card required? If so, you may be happy to hear that Target is testing a beta Red rewards program with hopes that it will lead to increased shopper loyalty. The FREE rewards program is currently being tested in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but hopefully it will roll out nationwide soon!

Perks of Target Red Rewards:

  • As a member of Target Red, every time you use a non-REDcard form of payment AND your Target Red account at Target stores or on Target.com, you’ll earn 1% on all eligible purchases to redeem within a year. Note that the 1% is not stackable with the 5% REDcard discount, which means if you use your REDcard to pay, you will not earn the 1% reward on that purchase.

  • FREE next-day delivery with Target’s Restock service (regularly $4.99). Restock is a next-day essentials delivery service that allows shoppers to fill a box with various essentials (up to 45 pounds) and have it delivered the next day. This service is currently only available in select areas.

  • Get the first year of your Shipt online membership for just $49.99 (regularly $99.99). Shipt is a same-day delivery service that allows shoppers to get items delivered from a variety of stores in as soon as one hour.

  • Vote for one of three local nonprofit groups that you want Target to support.

I’m probably in the minority but I’ll stick with my 5% red card discount!

    • rose

      Me too!

    • Amy

      Same here

  2. Lilmama1299

    I’m not
Sure why I would choose 1% over 5%

    • kim

Right?! I was thinking the exact same thing. Why on earth would i want to earn 1% and get a reward later when I could sace 5% now? I’ll pass.

  3. TSavingMoney

I’ll keep saving 5% with my RED debit card!
Some people at my work place refuse to get a Target REDcard because they don’t want to give Target their debit or credit card information. They will probably get the loyalty card and get 1%.

  4. Donna

Same here. I like the Red Card deal.
I don’t shop Target much unless there’s a really good deal or moneymaker. Too expensive.
1% is not worth the bother.

  5. K

This rewards program doesn’t sound very rewarding. I’d need more perks than what I see listed

    • retireewannabe

      I agree

  6. Sara

I have no intention of dinging my credit report to get a store credit card, but I am considering the debit card. I would have no problems keeping track of my spending and account balance, even with the withdrawal delay.

You can create better rewards without this new program. The REDcard saves 5%. Take 1% of the item’s price out of the 5% savings and put it into a savings account. You get a 1% reward plus interest, and you are still saving 4%. You can then redeem the 1% reward at any time instead of within a year.

Target with a latte in hand is my escape place. I already buy things I don’t need without a red card or loyalty program and I sometimes use shipt. I would 100% do this in a minute. In Houston they are rolling out their pickup service tomorrow- don’t even have to get out of the car for orders shipped to the store was the way customer service explained it to me.

  8. mommyx4

I would shop way more target if there was one near me and not have to go 30min away I miss target

  9. Ben

I got a question or comment!! Why should I be penalized for using my red card? I think you still get the 5% and 1%!!!

    • Kate

That is like someone paying for a credit card with 5% cash back getting upset that the credit card company is now offering a free card that has 1% cash back and wanting their reward to increase to 6%. Adding a benefit for people without a red card isnt penalizing you. Those willing to get the card still have the greater rewards. It would only be penalizing if they dropped it to 4%. Besides, you could take advantage of the 1% whenever you use gift cards to pay.

  10. Jodi

Obviously this program is intended to try and bring in more non Target red card holders into the stores.

  11. moria

I already use my redcard every time I shop at Target, so there isn’t a single “perk” of this program I’d use.

  12. Ashley

Pass….their Perks program that was tested previously was just fine and much better than this idea. I don’t understand why they couldn’t have perfected that and rolled it out in all areas.

    • Mel

because there were people abusing the rewards. so they decided to pull the plug and revamp the program. As usual, everyone suffers for a few bad apples.

      • Ashley Williams

Because Target allowed it. There were too many loopholes that allowed people not in the test areas to sign up. The rewards weren’t coded properly allowing items over the reward threshold to ring up free. That was all Target’s fault. But the program was still great. Fix the things that were wrong, but why change the whole concept when it was great.

  13. sophia

The above sounds like you earn 1% regardless of type of payment.

  14. Annesandi

It will come in handy when using gift cards but I will keep using my 5% red card for most purchases.

  15. Keesh

    This sounds confusing..

  16. linda

I’ll give it a try as I can easily pass by a Target on my way to work. I use gift cards that I bought when they go on sale in November rather than a Red Card, so an extra 1% is nice. Thanks – I hadn’t seen anything about this and I was there just this morning.

  17. GotItTogetherish

I got an email about this, read the details, it’s only available over a thousand miles from me. So sad.

  18. 50ShadesofLipstick

DFW area resident here (not far from Plano)…I use my Red Card and love saving 5%, but this can be useful to others so that’s a good thing. <3 Target.

  19. Tiggy

The rewards program is designed to increase loyalty (ie: spend more) in those folks who don’t have a red card. Like all store loyalty cards, it gives Target the opportunity to mine your shopping data. I wonder if this will enable the new program users to get the targeted home mailer coupons that RC holders get each month?

  20. cindy b

I have a target debit card. Love it. I get the 5 percent. I’m sure my data is already extensively mined by using the card, target app and cartwheel.

  21. Foggogs

I use cash and budget for most store purchases, even though I have a red debit card. I would use this rewards program.

  22. Sharon

It sounds very confusing……maybe it is for the non red card people but why not just get the red card? Gives you 5% off and free shipping? I will stick with my red card.

If you’re fortunate and are able to score mega bonus points from time to time on your Citi Bank Sears MC, and DO redeem your points for the Target gift cards – you should be able to score the 1% on TOP of the “FREE” gc! THe ONLY time I use that MC is when they are running a 10 the points promo – you get the original 1 point and then they add 10 times the amount afterward. So, even though I am using my points to make the gc purchase, for the most part, the points I DO originally earn with my purchases equate to approx 11% just a shade above. So, SCORE!! If I only lived in the approved areas 😉 Yes, I am cheap, but, I weight the sales as well when shopping Target – I may opt to use my RedCard over the gc – because I can always use my gc on something else – BUT, I can get the price 5% lower on an item there than probably someplace else – usually use this strategy with tp and some laundry items – just depends on necessity and other area sales at the time 🙂
