noise machine lectrofan review – box fan in trash can

Oh my dearest, faithful, and loyal box fan,

It pains me to write this, but the time has come to let you know that we must end our relationship.

Although I love you and the noise you produce, you just do not fit into my life anymore. As I have gotten older, I have realized that I need a smaller, lighter (and yes, even younger!) noise-making machine. I need something that’s easy to travel with, something that’s actually small but with a big impact, and something that will not start to creak and crack as it continues to age.

noise machine lectrofan review – Lectrofan on nightstandAs I hope we can continue to be friends, I would like to introduce you to my new love, LectroFan. He is awesome – small but sturdy with lots of different noise options. Instead of your one fan noise, LectroFan offers ten fan sounds and ten ambient noise variations with no motor or other internal moving parts. And not to brag or anything but my LectroFan has over 5,000 5-star reviews!

noise machine lectrofan review – lectrofan and lectrofan mini size comparison

And not to make you feel worse, but I love LectroFan so much that I actually went out and bought LectroFan Micro! 😱 This mini sound machine is about half the size of the regular LectroFan but offers most of the same features – and its small size makes it awesome for travel!

Box fan, I have really valued the years we spent together, and I hope you find someone you work better with in the future.

Love, Bryn

Letter written by Bryn, Collin’s sister & sidekick.

HIP TIP – Although the LectroFan is not currently on sale, it has been part of Amazon one-day only sales in the past! With that said, hopefully we’ll see another sale on these noise machines again soon.

Lol! I am the same way! Have to have a fan on.

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

Glad to hear I am not alone, Ang! 🙂

  2. Ashley

Too funny! I’m excited to hear how much you love the LectroFan; I bought one a while back to use for overnight trips, camping, etc but haven’t actually used it yet. I wasn’t quite ready to put away the box fan but maybe with this encouragement it’s finally time to unplug! 😊

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

Hope you get a chance to use it soon! I think you will love it!

  3. ljb

adding this to my christmas list ideas. my boyfriend has an ear condition that requires constant white noise in the background. currently we’re using an air purifier but it’s bulky.

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

YAY! I hope he like this and you are able to ditch the bulky air purifier!

  4. Stefanie

The box fan we use is not just for sound – it’s for air circulation as well – so there’s no way I would give it up! We have a smaller fan we use for travel and we typically clean and replace our box fans every few years, so they don’t get creaky and old.

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

I do love good air circulation too! I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom so I always have that on for air movement and then I use the LectroFan for the white noise. So smart to clean your fans every once in a while as they do build up some serious dust!

    • Charmel

Me too! I can not stand the still air in hotel rooms. I need the noise and the air movement. So I will keep my stash of fans.

  5. HipMomof3

What a great Father’s Day gift idea! We currently use a baby sound machine and use the “rain” setting and the cost is about $25, so it’s another option. If I see this go on sale though, I might just get one.

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

Yes, I think this would be a great gift idea! Hope we see it drop in price soon!

  6. 🌺Nolee🌺

We just use our phones. We use the RelaxMelodies app. They have everything from white noise, oscillating fan, etc. Great when we travel. Especially for hotel rooms where outside noises can cause sleep loss.

    • alienna21

I find the RelaxMelodies app to be wonderful, also.

  7. JA

I’m going to be the one who says it. The comma doesn’t go after Dear. It should go after Fan. I noticed the same thing on the last “Dear” post and it drove me nuts. Yes, I’m crazy. Lololol😘😘

    • KR

Dear JA, you are right! 😉

    • Jennifer

Stuff like that drives me crazy too! Glad I am not alone! 😂😂

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

Dear JA, thanks for the heads up! I have fixed the grammar in the title.

      Thanks! 🙂

    • AilineAZ

It drives me nuts when people play grammar police! Rude and unnecessary!
I assume you are without failure. Have a great rest of the day.

  8. Rachael

I also switched from a small room fan to this exact thing! I love it! It has different pitches of white noise, volume control and on and off button. I have the regular size and love it! Ever since college I have had to use a fan to drown out noise and now this does the same, but without the bulk fan. It fits perfectly on my nightstand. I highly recommend it!

  9. Hhotz

    I ain’t quit’in you box fan! 😂

    • Sara

Me either! I love my box fan been sleeping with one since I was little. I can’t sleep if I don’t have the noise of it, and I like the air on me, my house the upstairs is super hot, so I like the fan to cool it down a little.

  10. Sue

Although I have central air conditioning and ceiling fans in the house, I have a collection of box fans, too. They are left from the many years I worked in a classroom without AC. Now we use them in the basement for air circulation during workouts and under the deck awning for air circulation. In our area, the senior centers accept working fans as donations for distribution to senior citizens without AC.

  11. Jennifer

Hey what are you doing with your box fan could really use one

  12. Tara in TX

I will be looking into this for when I need the sound without the air circulation….but for that I love my little, cute, powerful!, turquoise (fav color ~ yay!) Vornado! It weighs so little and folds up ~ even got past cruise ship embarkment in my carry-on. Of course, only found out about it and got it on sale through Hip2Save 🤗!

  13. FosterMomsNeverHaveEmptyNestSyndrome

We bought one last time the price dropped! Love it!! It doesn’t suck up dust in bottom like our old fan driven noise machine~ and it’s quiet enough to not be heard outside the room with the door closed… or loud enough that you can’t hear anything outside of your room~ not siblings, dishes noise, or Canadian Geese that seem to camp outside my window! It’s amazing!

  14. Jen

I’m a mosquito magnet! I put the box fan to blow at me on the highest setting on summer days that I don’t feel like applying bug spray while seated out on the patio.

  15. Aly

I like my compact and sturdy Honeywell TurboForce Fan – it gives strong air circulation without having to worry about it flopping over like a box fan sometimes does. It’s so compact, it is portable and easy to travel with if going by car.

    • Sara

My box fan and my mother’s box fan each have two “feet” to keep it from falling over. My mom has a Honeywell TurboForce fan as well. I don’t think it gives strong enough circulation on its lowest setting, but it is noisy on higher settings.

  16. Lana

We are silence sleepers here and when someone comes to stay overnight and brings a sound machine it drives us nuts!

    • Emily

Me too! We have a window ac to survive the summer months and it kills us to have to turn it on at night.

  17. Karen

Have one and love it! I paid extra for the travel case and feel it was worth it……might want to check in to that too.

I will say I only use one “sound”. The one that sounds most like a box fan to me…….so if there is a cheaper version with fewer sounds that might be something to consider.

For those saying they need a box fan for air circulation……we installed ceiling fan/light combos in every room. No more box fan and save on electric. (Can keep thermostat higher in summer).

  18. Lilmama1299

Nope lol. Staying with my box fan.

  19. Joy

If anyone has a fan that is getting old or isn’t working anymore… Best Buy will take them for recycling. 😉

    • lynnleco

      Good to know!

  20. HeyItsYess

Am confused…so this is not a real fan?

  21. Lauren

I love my Lectrofan! I picked it up on one of those Amazon deals of the day a couple years ago and I now can’t sleep without it. It goes on all trips with us. I really appreciate it in hotel rooms with bad highway road noise. It’s also good for drowning out TV noise from another room.

  22. Bekah

We sleep with 2 box fans but have the small white travel Lectrofan. It is surprisingly loud for such a small machine. I highly recommend for traveling, but I’d still rather have my box fans at home.

  23. Vickie Burns

Bryn, just had to tell you how entertaining your write up was! Enjoy a good read!

  24. RamonaR

I was so hoping this was going to be an article about what are the best fans to replace box fans. My bedroom fan stopped working last year and I have to buy a new one ASAP! The fan I had was a floor fan, the kind you can raise or lower, and with a remote. Unfortunately a ceiling fan is out of the question, so I will need to buy a room fan – one that with high velocity and a nice “wind” sound. It doesn’t matter if it’s a floor fan or table fan…I just need a really good fan (but easy on the $$ too). If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I thank you in advance!!

  25. Erin

I’m curious. Why do you use noise machines? What are you trying to drown out? Do you use them only when sleeping or do you keep it on during the day?

  26. Stephanie

I got the LectroFan micro the last time there was a deal on it, and it’s been great to have when traveling because my husband has to sleep with fan noise. It’s so nice to have a consistent sound when sleeping in unfamiliar places. I like that it’s rechargeable and super small. It has lots of different sounds to choose from, and volume control.

  27. 50ShadesofLipstick

Am I the only one that can’t stand the sound of even relatively quiet fans lol? We have central AC and ceiling fans…the perk of the latter is that it’s not only functional, but also adds a stylistic element to the room! Whereas regular fans add visual clutter imo

  28. Ashley

SLEEPO App is my go to and it’s free

  29. Rachel B.

This is hilarious, because I was just realizing the same thing about our fans! “Hey, maybe after 20 years or so, it’s okay to replace a fan that requires a step ladder to keep it from propelling itself backwards across the room!” Yeah. You can also make yourself feel better about the switch by reminding yourself that even if you buy newer fans–as I plan to–they’re probably both more effective and more energy efficient. 🙂

  30. Lauren

I absolutely love my LectoFan Micro! It’s hard to believe such a small
machine can be so powerful, but it really is. It has great options for type of sound and volume. I take it with me every time I go on a trip!

  31. Trin

Am I the only one dying that it is “Dear JA”?!? 🤣🤣 Or maybe I’m just a potty-mouth brat! 😬😉

  32. algal

We use the marpac white noise machine. I got it for my husband back when we were dating and his roommates were keeping him awake with late night music, conversations, games, etc. It got to the point where he could no longer sleep without it. We have an air purifier that is super loud in our bedroom because of my allergies, but we travel with the marpac. We tried the non-mechanical ones, but the noise never sounded quite right. They always seemed off to us.
