I bought one of these PB Kids backpacks for my daughter when she started kindergarten. She just finished 1st grade and it still looks great! Now looking to order a PB Teen one for my older son!

    • Brandy

I bought my son his for Kindergarten too; he’s going into the FOURTH grade & it’s still in perfect condition! He loves it & I’m blown away by the quality! Looking for my daughter’s first one today!

My daughter needs a new one this coming year but she did use her backback for two years. It was looking nice for the first and half the second… same with the lunch box. It’s pretty roughed up now though!

That’s so awesome that this backpack has held up so well for you! Thanks for the feedback!

I popped in to say something similar. Kindergarten my daughter went through 3 backpacks (broken zippers, ripped seams, etc.). One was from Crazy 8, the other two were character bags. Before she started 1st grade I got her a PB Kids backpack and matching lunch box when they went on sale – I probably spent about $30 for the set. She used them all of first grade. Second grade I got her a new backpack but it bit the dust halfway through the year and she finished the year with her PB one. 3rd grade she started the year with her PB backpack then I “upgraded” her to a set from Justice when they had a sale. Partway through the year she chose to go back to her PB backpack even though she thought the Justice one was cute. The PB one is bigger, holds water bottles better and she’s started to like the little headphone port. She could easily use the backpack again this upcoming year. There are a few scuff marks on some edgesif you look closely but a quick trip through the gentle cycle of the washing machine has it looking bright again. We’re sticking with PB from now on. The pattern we got was peacocks with a dark brown background and light pink trim. So far it hasn’t been too babyish. The way it’s held up so far I think a pattern change may be our only reason to swap it out.

Trying to keep an eye out when the PB teen lunchboxes go onsale, those are good deals for the kids though!!!

  3. Briana

Canโ€™t go wrong with PB backpacks.

  4. Julia

Any one remember from last year if there is a better deal before school starts. I kind of remember their sale on a back pack and lunch box was a great deal.

    • Jamie S

I think there was, b/c I remember the teen options were added as well. I’m waiting on that one too.

    • Crystal

YEs!! I paid less than $6 for a lunch box last year before school started.

  5. Alyssa

Thank you!! Just ordered my 1st grader a new backpack and lunch box!

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      You’re welcome, Alyssa!

Any input on what size backpack would be good for a kindergartner? 2nd grade? I was thinking the medium??

    • DD

I am trying to figure out what size to buy for kindergartener. Does small size works?

    • Oconnor5

I went with the Large. Yes itโ€™s big but they can grow with it.

    • Amber

Definitely small for kindergarten and large for 2nd grade. All three of my children have had these backpacks for the last three years and we LOVE them. My kindergartner has the small and my very tall first grader has the large. My youngest has the pre-k one that we used as a little diaper bag when she was a toddler but it’s definitely not big enough for a kid in pre-k (I knew that when I bought it) It is TINY! I just bought her a small one for when she starts pre-k next year. =)

    • Jen

Small is good for K, and Iโ€™d say Large for 2nd grade. My daughter starting using the Large in 1st grade. It was a little big, but she needed the room for lunchbox, folders, shoes in winter, snow pants, etc.

    • JoeyK

I would make sure you look at the type I ordered the fair fax in a small for my 1st grader and itโ€™s way to small, hardly fits a folder. The small Iโ€™m the McKenzie style would probably be fine since theyโ€™re roomier

    • Sara

I went with small for my kindergartener because she is a peanut. We had no problem fitting a folder, notebook, library books, and lunch in the small. It’s still a good size for her going into 2nd grade, but we are ordering a large this year to better fit binders and folders.

    • Rae

Small (NOT pre-k). It’s pretty big. My child can bring home folders, a book, and fit lunch with some room.

    • Shannon

The fairfax backpack size small is VERY small. I bought it and ended up having to buy another one because no returns. The Mackenzie backpack small is fine for kindergarten and early elementary years.

Thank you! I’ve been putting off buying the rainbow backpack, and now it’s the best price I’ve seen! As a teacher, I can attest to the quality of their backpacks. They can be washed in the washing machine! We’ve had one for almost four years, no rips, tears or stains to be seen. I did purchase the large for my Kindergarten, as requested from the school. My daughter has special needs, and besides when it had heavier items, the size never bothered her. I definitely recommend!

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the feedback and recommendation! You are very welcome!

  8. Sue

Heads up on their return policy! Pottery Barn Kids does not accept any returns bought in store or online if your store is a PBK outlet. I found out the hard way when I bought a duffel bag that was too large for my grandson. The return policy states that they will gladly accept online returns in-store, but the closest store to me (45 minutes away) refused my return because it is an outlet. If you think you might need to return your purchase, I strongly recommend you review the return policy before you order!

    • Rae

These backpacks sell really well on eBay often more than retail so if it doesn’t work out that’s an option!

Is PB backpack better than Lands End?

    • Grace

Idk I always get lands end. They hold up really well.

  10. Shannon

When do ll bean backpacks go on sale? I bought one for my middle schooler and it’s great! Very strong and big. I weighed his backpack one time at it was 14 lbs with all his books etc. that’s craZy.

  11. Maple36

Do I get Small or Large for a 1st grader this next school year?
