According to the FDA, Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut mixed fruit containing these melons, produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis, because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio and sold at retailers including Costco, Kroger, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, Whole Foods/Amazon, & other retailers.

Because it is possible that products shipped between April 17th and June 7th, 2018 could still be on store shelves, retailers and consumers should check their inventories and shelves. If you have any of these products in your fridge, be sure to throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.

Contact 1-844-467-7278 Monday through Friday, 6AM to 10PM CT and Saturday and Sunday, 6AM to 6PM CT to arrange for disposal or return of the product.

Watch the other produce at Kroger as well. I had prebagged apples on the same display as melon and ended up with salmonella last week, all thoroughly washed first.

Is this only for the food that’s being cut and package?

why would even somebody want to buy cut watermelon?

    • 50ShadesofLipstick

Uhh…convenience. Also not wanting to consume an entire watermelon.

When traveling, or people who have disabilities. Lots of reasons.

I got an automated call from Costco regarding this product I purchased around mother’s day. I’m in Nebraska so maybe they were being overly cautious with my phone call.

So an uncut, whole melon is okay to eat??

    • Tiggy

Yes, but you need to thoroughly wash and dry it BEFORE you cut it. It’s the cutting through and into the melon that can spread the contaminants on the outside of the melon or other fresh produce.

Well great Sprouts has melons on sale this week for like $0.98, and I’m in Missouri.
