Hawaii tickets
We were just there over spring break. If you have never been there, it is incredible. People are friendly, weather is perfect, snorkeling is breathtaking. Since the tickets we so expensive from where we live (flying out of Cleveland, Ohio) We stayed for 2 weeks and about 5-6 days on each the main 3 islands. Rather than having to buy round trip tickets 3 times, it was a money saver that way. Flights between the Islands were $100 each way, (for those that don’t know, you cannot sail between islands) (It is much farther than you think it would be) What shocked me the most was the cost of food there. Not so much in restaurants, but in stores. Eggs were $5.99 per dozen!!!!. AT WALMART!!! On the big Island, we stayed in a cottage and figured we would just eat breakfast before we day tripped for the day. $70 later, we had just enough food for 3 of us for 5 days. But you have to remember, Hawaii imports everything, they have no industries there, so shipping things in is expensive because of the location in the middle of the Pacific. Lodging was much more affordable than I thought it would be. I know this probably sound extravagant, but my 40 year old husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung failure 9 years ago, and months later my 6 year old son was diagnosed with leukemia. We started saving air miles at that point and decided if we ever made it through, we would take the trip of a lifetime. 8 years later, my son is in remission and my husband had a double lung transplant. After not taking a vacation in 7 years (the previous one was my sons Make A Wish trip). Any way, I digress. After many years on Hip2Save, Learning to be frugal, and ways to save, traveling, shopping, eating out, etc. We were able to make the trip happen. Airmiles, Go City Cards, Eating off the beaten path, staying out of tourist traps, and hanging and befriending the locals is where its at. Yelp had wonderful benefits also, if you check in to the restaurant, free appetizers, discount, etc. are waiting for you. We took many snacks with us from the mainland and made snacking cheap. It really is an affordable vacation if you just take your Hip2Save knowledge with you and plan, plan, plan. Thanks again Hip2Save!!!

Not sure about the other islands but big island has a Costco, a lot of items are the same price as the mainland so we stick up on food and stay at a condo, great way to save on food.
Thanks, Lisa! Good to know!
Maui, too! Costco is right by the airports of both of those islands. We did, however, buy way to much almond milk. LOL
Kauai also has Cotsco.
Ugh… Costco
Dawn, sorry you family had so many health problem, happy to hear everything is working out
Dawn is absolutely right; the Big Island is easily the best value in Hawaii, with affordable Airbnbs, and lots of free natural attractions. Stay near Kona, which is far away from the lava and any worries about air quality. You will definitely need to rent a car, but they’re affordable. Gas is the highest in the country, but you won’t use too much of it; Costco is always the cheapest. Don’t shop at a grocery store, the restaurants away from the resorts are very affordable, especially for seafood. If you like raw fish, eat lots of poke; the most affordable meals are the Hawaiian plate lunches such as loco moco. Search online for free things to do, such as coffee farms, beaches, waterfalls, the mountain observatory, and much more.
Great tips! Thank you!
If travelling to Maui, there is a Costco at Kahului where visitors can stock up on snack, breakfast and picnic food. Prices are higher than the mainland but still cheaper than eating out for every meal. There are bbq grills on some public beaches too .
Hawaii is my home and while the cost of living is much higher for goods and housing, I am thankful that I can afford to live comfortably in paradise by frugal shopping and lifestyle. I would be more than happy to help provide information or insights for anyone travelling to Oahu. Haven’t gone to the outer islands in recent years so my input would be outdated but I still may be able to offer some local tips.
Char,
Please email me, I would love to know your tips and tricks for Oahu. I will be traveling there for my honeymoon. krissyhw@gmail.com
I live in Hawaii (my entire life) and u know what’s sad when I see fares like this? Knowing that the homeless population picks up on it too! They buy a one-way fare and never leave. Pls don’t assume I have no compassion for the homeless, but when u literally have *not* contributed in any way, shape, or form to the community u expect to now take care of u, I draw the line. Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade, but that’s our reality at this time.
Homelessness is out of control everywhere . Most homeless people can’t afford this airfare so no need to worry 🙄
I agree, Amy… the public housing waitlists are closed in most if not all of the six counties I work out of and even the homeless are waiting almost a year for a home if they can get one.. I can’t imagine anyone waiting thinking they’ll find refuge in Hawaii.
But for those who just want to visit, come on over! The Big Island (Hawaii Island) isn’t awful like how the media is portraying it. Totally do-able. Actually now would be the best time to vacation there! Not as many people (I live on Oahu). Deals to be had!
I can’t believe no one has mentioned that you can also get Spam and eggs at McDonald’s in Hawaii. That was the highlight of my husband’s trip. 🤣 Maui also has many adorable food trucks by most beaches. Fish tacos for days, and they will be the best you’ve ever had.
I know right ? not to mention you can get also get a pineapple/ taro/ haupia(coconut) pie at McDonalds instead of the regular apple pies avaiable on the mainland, and they also serve saimin noodles at McDonalds!
If you want to be super adventurous you could pitch a tent on any beach for up to 3 days with a permit. It might sounds crazy but many people do it, no bugs, and the beaches are soft and beautiful. Tents are cheap enough at Walmart.
Most beaches not any because some are private for the resorts
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of this! Dawn, I’m so glad that your family has made it through some very, very tough times. It’s been insightful to read tips and input from everyone! Thank you!
