As a former teacher, I recommend if you can afford it, to spend a few cents more to go with the Crayola. They last a lot longer, especially the crayons.

    • Emily

agreed with Jill ^^ as an art teacher, I really prefer Crayola!

    • Alaina

Can you specify why they last longer? (Break less, can color more etc) my kids list were posted on their schools website(they will be k,&2nd grade) and everything is brand specific. Which can be frustrating when it’s hard to find or never ran on sale. I just wish they said why I need only white glue stick and not the color dries clear. What makes finkster scissors better? Markers crayons and colored pencils must be Crayola brand. I know you didn’t make the list my kids have. I am just looking for some insight as to why specific brands are better.

As a former teacher I can tell you that Crayola crayons are better. They don’t break as easy and they color better (not as waxy), so they seem to last much better throughout the year. Fisker scissors cut better (cleaner cut) and seem to last longer. I don’t know about benefits if white glue sticks. Fyi- I also prefer ticonderoga pencils because they sharpen better which makes them last longer.

        • Alaina

Thank you, it all makes sense. I figured they had to have a good reason for teachers to suggest specific stuff. Those are the pencils they suggested too.

        • Sara

In my experience, Ticonderoga pencils have the best erasers for wood pencils. I despise smooth erasers that leave smudges. These are smooth but still rough enough to erase cleanly. Also, Cra-Z-Art crayons smell bad.

Some of the crayola items are on sale as well, crayons, markers, etc. also composition books are 50 cents.

    • Megan

HI Valerie – where did you find comp books for 50 cents? The cheapest I see is 88 cents. Thanks!

As a mother of 4 I can tell you that I’ve bought both brand and off brand, I’ve used both with my children, coloring books and stuff I noticed the markers paint it’s not as strong, and doesn’t last as long as a crayola brand, it kind of dries out, the crayons color it’s not as strong either, it’s more “waxy”
So I always buy good brand for school and stock on off brand for them to keep at home

I’m not a teacher but I’ve been buying school supplies for many years now and I can tell you, the cheap crayons have way more wax and less color in them (we’ve melted them down for crafts and there is a clear differnce…) scissors…we’ve bought the cheap ones and somehow the kids break them. I’m not sure about the white glue stick requests…our teachers would just beg for more! We usually buy the cheap brands of stuff for extras around the house and buy the good stuff for school.

If you can afford it by Crayola crayons, markers, and Fiskar scissors. Kmart has notebooks for .17 in store. I was able to use points to get some free.

      Great find! Thanks for sharing!

    • Megan

      Thank you!!

I find that the cheaper brand crayons ball up like when your coloring there is little balls of crayon everywhere and the color is not as potent ( I don’t know if that makes any sense to anyone ) so that’s why I buy crayola at home and for school and speaking of crayola I found 40 count packs of crayola eraser tops which was a popular request from both my school age boys this past year from the teachers for a dollar a pack they were almost wiped out but I got what was left they are cute to the erasers look like crayons I will be interested in the feed back from the teachers on them !!!

    • Melmots

      Hi Jessica,
Where did you find the Crayola eraser tops & what was the price please? Thanks in advance 🌺

Im not mentally ready to start buying school supplies yet!!!

  8. VT

The washable crazy art markers are now out of stock on line

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for the heads up!

  9. Alicia

I may have the unpopular opinion here, but I prefer the CraZArt markers over crayola. I have three kids 4 and under and markers often get left open longer than they should. Crayola dry out pretty quickly but the cheaper ones still work after HOURS uncapped. Also, at the lower price point I can stock up and if they get ruined, they get ruined and there is no frustration involved.

The crayons are out of stock online now.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Maybe check back again. I still find them available online now as I click through. Hope that helps!

    Hi Alaina,
As a Mom of 3, I’ve bought my share of school supplies & now I’m helping my SIL’s 3 girls to buy their school supplies. The crazy art crayons & markers were not a wise choice for us bcuz they stink, they don’t color well, & the children get all frustrated & rip up the loose leaf paper or the notebook paper, which costs more in the long run. Back in the day when my 3 children were going to school, it was either Rose Art or Crayola. The Crayola brand crayons & markers last longer bcuz they’re made better. As far as the fiskars & thr glue sticks, I didn’t have any problem with either one. If you live near an Office Max, OfficeDepot, or a Staples store, they’re starting to have really good sales & as July rolls around & even in August, the sales will continue! I hope that this helps you!
