ninja coffee bar review | Cassie

Hi all! It’s Cassandra, one of Collin’s sidekicks!

I’m not what you’d call high-functioning in the mornings. Like, not even on my best day. So coffee is necessary. I’ve owned a Tassimo, a Keurig, a French press, and a regular drip coffee brewer and none of them hold a candle to my Ninja Coffee Bar.

My Tassimo and Keurig worked well but always seemed so wasteful and pods for the Tassimo were impossible to find. My drip brewer always left me wanting more, and let’s face it, I’m barely able to pull an outfit together and attempt a hairdo before 7 a.m. so the whole French press thing just wasn’t happening.

First I drink the coffee, then I do the things.

Making a single cup or an entire carafe of coffee is as easy as turning on the machine, dumping in coffee grounds, and selecting a brew option. It can be preset at night, just like a regular drip-brewer, or done hastily in the foggy chaos of a weekday morning.

I just keep the water reservoir filled, and my Ninja Coffee Bar will measure out the perfect amount of water for the size and strength coffee I want. Plus, its warming plate automatically adjusts the temperature based on how much coffee I’ve brewed or have left in the carafe (which means no more scorched coffee)!

It also brews concentrated coffee that can be used to make espresso-style drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and more – all without having to use any other machine! Obviously, you’re not going to get a true espresso – you’d need an espresso machine for that, but you can get pretty darned close. Probably even close enough to keep you from putting on actual pants, driving to Starbucks, and forking over $6.

The Ninja also has the ability to pause at any point while brewing. This is great for those times when you really need a cup of coffee but don’t have the time or patience to wait for a whole carafe to brew.

It tastes like hopes and dreams…

Now that the weather has warmed up, I’m all about the over ice setting again. I add coffee grounds to the basket before I go to bed, and in the morning I fill my cup with ice, stick it under the brewer, and press ‘Over Ice Brew’. My Ninja brews super strong coffee which blends with the melting ice so I get PERFECT iced coffee every time.

I just love cleaning my coffee maker, said no one ever.

It’s also simple to clean. The filter, basket and water reservoir come off easily and can be cleaned with just soap and water or a quick run through the dishwasher. To clean the machine itself, I fill the water reservoir, add a little vinegar, and press the ‘clean’ button. The Ninja does the rest.

It also comes with a recipe book, double-sided coffee scoop with measurements printed on it, copper mesh filter (no more paper filters!), and a milk frother. I bought mine at Target but you can also find the Ninja Coffee Bar on, Amazon or for anywhere between $99.99 and $149.99. They all offer a version with a thermal carafe, too, if that’s your thing.

Nope, Ninja is not sponsoring this post.

Is there enough room for a tall, portable coffee mug? It looks like the space is kind of small?

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi there! It depends on how tall the travel mug is. That little silver tray that the mugs are sitting on in the pics actually flips up so you can fit a travel mug or carafe underneath.

    • Krystal

This is showing it with the cup shelf down but it folds up and I brew 90% of my cups straight into travel mugs, I have found very few mugs that won’t fit under the drip.

    • Stephanie

Yes, I use a 20oz mug all of the time. The little silver shelf that the cups are sitting on in the post folds up so you can fit a larger cup underneath.

Got a ninja almost 2 years ago when my beloved Keurig died. I felt stuck to the pods not happy to pay the price for them even on sale. My ninja, Michelangelo, is my favorite coffee maker I’ve ever owned and I can’t imagine now ever owning anything else! I recommend it to people all the time, I’m mostly the only coffee drinker in my house (except company) and I love making one 20 ounce travel mug size cup first thing in the morning and a second in the early afternoon, no wasteful pods, I get the perfect brew strength and no pot sitting around warming between cups.

    • Cherryluva

      I LOVE it!! Michaelangelo!!! 😂😂😂

  3. Brittany

I saw this machine at a Wal-Mart in Austin in the clearance section.

  4. Liliana

I have a ninja coffee bar. I fit a stanley 20 oz travel mug under it without issues as well as the ozark trail 30 oz…for comparison. I love this machine for hot coffee. I’m not a fan of iced coffee from it as I find it’s not as smooth as brewing in a cold Brewer, as the heating process makes it more acidic. it’s tolerable, but not as good as cold brewing, Imo. cleaning is pretty easy, but it’s a common bug that over time deposit can still build up around the sensor and may take some effort and time to clear the sensor if this happens. I recommend running a cleaning process regularly and not waiting on the clean recommendation light. I’ll never bother w a Keurig again. I’ve had this for almost 2 years and as a daily coffee drinker (several coffee a day)…this is the bee’s knees!

I wish that I could say that I love my Ninja. It takes awhile to drain the water through the reusable filter and the paper filter is even longer. The taste is definitely not as good as my Cusinart grind and brew was. I just hate that I spent $99 on it and it is subpar in performance, in my opinion.

    • Mei

I too wanted to love a ninja! However, mine leaked all over the place! After researching the machine (too late for me) I found that this is a common problem with the design. Now my ninja sits it the basement awaiting the cyborg uprising!

    • Kim

I didn’t love mine either. In fact, I just gave it to my sister about a week ago. I had it for almost 2 years and maybe used it a total of ten times. It just mostly took up space on my counter and it was too much of a hassle to bother with most days. I ended up forking over the $300 for an espresso machine with the attached milk frother. I love lattes, espressos, machiatos, iced coffees, etc and was going to Starbucks several times a week so this was the perfect investment for me. I use it at least twice a day and am in love with the taste and quality of the coffee as well as the ease of use. I can add different syrups and create my own Starbucks drinks I love at home. I have only been to starbucks 3 times since I bought it 2 months ago.

    • Ginger

I also don’t love my Ninja. Mine worked fine for a couple months and then the cleaning light is stuck on no matter how much I clean it. I cleaned it regularly, every 2 weeks prior to the light getting stuck on. And I agree with the other person who said that the filter takes awhile for the water to drain through. I really WANT to love the machine, but honestly, the only part about it that I really enjoy is the milk frother.

      • Renee

Speaking of lights getting stuck on, I am having the same problem with my Ninja kitchen system where the light for the single serve button is stuck on. I called the customer service line and of course they have no solution so now I am only able to use my kitchen system to make a single serve smoothie.

Did you guys know that you can buy refillable K cups and reuse them over and over again? That eliminates the waste. I love my Keurig.

  7. Cal

I love my keurig too! I use refillable coffe pods and just buy ground coffee alternatives.

  8. Molly

I love my Ninja as well! For those with leaking or long brew time issues, try a more coarse grind to your coffee. I brew half carafes on the weekend and travel mug size for on the go, it performs great either way. I have not tried the over ice brew yet (I am a cold brew devotee), but I will have to try it sometime soon!

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Great ideas, Molly! I love cold brewed coffee as well but can never seem to get my act together to make it far enough in advance, LOL!

  9. Jess

I had a Keurig for years. Thought it made good coffee. Used the reusable filters instead of k-cups. 3 years ago my BF bought me a ninja. I made the exact same coffee in the ninja and was astounded by how much better it tasted! The keurig immediately went in the garage sale and I haven’t regretted it for one day. Easy to use, zero issues, lots of options, great tasting coffee..I feel like I can’t say enough good things!! Will never own another coffee maker!

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I definitely prefer the taste of coffee in the Ninja over my old Keurig too! I think it has a lot to do with being able to control how much coffee actually goes into the machine. That’s my theory anyway. 😉 Thanks so much for your comment, Jess!

I have a single serve Ninja and absolutely love it. I got my mother the Ninja with the stainless steel thermal
carafe, and she loves it as well. Awesome, awesome product in my opinion, for regular coffee. Not sure it delivers on the lattes/ specialty drinks, but regular coffee is great.

  11. Lana

We have a Jura Impressa and would not trade it for any other coffee maker. Problem is what to use in the motorhome we bought last month since we are coffee snobs.

  12. Meghan

Your kitty mug is adorable! TJMAXX perhaps? I’ve seen it but never thought it would look that cute on my coffee station. I will re-consider now – both the mug and the Ninja! 🙂

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Meghan! Thanks so much! This is the mug I ordered. It came with wheat grass for my cat. If you’re wanting one w/out the wheat grass, this one is really similar.

  13. Corey

Hi! My husband and I were so excited when we received our Ninja coffee bar as a present. Morning coffee were great, no problems for the first year. Then all went down hill. I’m on my second base that we had to pay for $23.00. After a year you’re on your own Ninja won’t help at All! We dont use chlorinated water, we don’t leave water in the resivor, and we clean it with store bought cleaner from bed bath and beyond. All was recommended by Ninja. We currently are having problems with the second base. I have other Ninja appliances after this experience with our coffee maker I won’t be doing business with them again. We are sad but upset Ninja won’t back their products.

  14. Lindsay

I’ve had the same Keurig for 7 years now, and it’s still going strong.

  15. BoyMom

I love my ninja! I love that it has the one cup setting (small and large) and a half or whole pot setting. The brew over ice feature is great. Bed bath and beyond sells them as well so don’t forget your coupon. Hang on to your receipt as well in case something does go wrong with it, they gladly do exchanges on the machines.

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Good point! Those Bed Bath & Beyond coupons really come in handy!

  16. Angie

I have had my Ninja for 6 months. Have called customer service 2 times, clean it every 3-4 weeks (short AND long cycle – about 9 hours), and I will not buy another. I LOVE the stainless steel carafe and the coffee tastes great, but not worth the cleaning light that is stuck on and now blinks non stop. So, if you are good with blinking lights and not being able to read the display, buy it – the coffee tastes great and the thermal carafe keeps the coffee warm for hours.

    • Cassandra (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That stinks! So sorry to hear about your issues with that darn cleaning light, Angie. I have yet to experience any issues with mine but will be keeping an eye out for that for sure!

  17. Olgraygirl

Following a lead from H2S last year, I got my NInja single serve model from Zulily. I love, love, love the coffee. Got rid of the Keurig and still have a full size grind & brew for when there are more than 2 of us, but nothing I have had beats the Ninja for great taste, variety of brew types, brewing over ice, etc. I must say I have also experienced the clean cycle light issue, but not giving up my Ninja for that! It came with a very large double-walled travel tumbler, so no problem with different size mugs.
PS- Also love the kitty mug!

  18. Ginaoz

I loved mine until the water was turning green at the bottom and there was no way to completely drain it. I cleaned it how they suggested only to have little bits of water at bottom of water reservoir. I called, emailed only to find out this is a flaw and to pay 25$ for a new water canister that would do same thing.

  19. Janell

Really stuck…it looks like it’s a Hit or Miss situation with the Ninja Coffee Bars. I really want one…but seem to really find a middle ground between the amount of people that Love it or Hate it. Debating getting it at WalMart and holding on to the receipt…just to try it out. And maybe just putting my Keurig in the garage until I try it for a good while…just in case

  20. Shelby

I also purchased the Ninja when it was posted here on Zulily. And it is my favorite coffee maker I own. I was using Keurig and was so sick of the watered down taste. I use mine daily for iced coffee. I use McDonald’s McCafe coffee, liquid sugar and top it with creamer and it is amazing. I will never own anything else.
