Make This DIY Butter Slime Using Clay
Are your kids still obsessed with slime!?
Mine sure are! If you have slime fans at home, try making this fun and addictive DIY Butter Slime! The texture is soft and spreadable just like butter or frosting and is super satisfying to play with! Plus it’s really easy to make this slime recipe and takes just a few minutes.
Mix your favorite slime recipe with clay!
My 10-year-old daughter and her friends are really into butter slime made with this super soft air-dry dough called Daiso clay. It’s super fine with an almost kinetic sand feel. We buy it on Amazon, and although it appears to come from Japan, it ships through Prime quickly. There are lots of colors available, and the pigments are nice and bold.
Our favorite base recipe for slime is the recipe we’ve featured HERE using glue and contact solution, but you can mix clay with your favorite slime recipe as well.
Daiso vs Crayola Clay
You can definitely try experimenting with other brands of craft air dry clay. We tried mixing our slime with Crayola Model Magic to compare. The result, however, wasn’t as buttery and soft. It was still fun if you want a more mold-able firm slime kinda like a putty, but it won’t spread like butter.
How to Make DIY Butter Slime
Supplies Needed:
- 6 oz. Elmer’s School Glue
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons contact solution
- small piece of Daiso clay
Directions:
1.) Pour glue into a bowl, and stir it together with baking soda and water.
2.) Add contact solution as the slime “activator” and stir. You’ll notice the consistency starts to get firm right away. Keep stirring until you’re able to build slime into a ball. Add additional contact solution if too sticky.
3.) Place slime on the counter and manipulate it.
4.) Take a piece of clay (about 1/4 cup) and fold it in so it combines with slime.
5.) Once it’s combined, the result is a nice spreadable soft butter slime!

My kids beg me to make slime constantly and this idea was a big hit. We took a slime-making break for a while, but it’s actually a pretty fun summer activity so our slime making is back on!

Nope! My best friend’s daughter Hanna, age 11, recently taught a slime-making class at her great grandma’s assisted living home. The residents LOVED it. How cute is that?! 😍

Ok my daughter has been wanting to make this for a while. She has an Amazon gift card but wants to spend it wisely so here is her question- will this clay take coloring good? If you get yellow and add blue food coloring will it change to green or will not take the coloring? Would it be better to get the white clay if it takes coloring good? Thank you!
Hi Jackie- we haven’t purchased the white, but just a search of YouTube videos appears you can dye it. I think it’d be easy to just dye the slime then mix in white clay. Hope that helps!

Will it dry out? Should we keep it in an airtight container?

How is it for clean up? I love regular slime b/c it’s just washable glue and soap, so it comes off easily.
So far no troubles on the clean end up. Not super messy at all

I wear contacts, so I always have contact solution around. For me I would be wasting money buying borax that I never use, just for slime.
Is there a special type of contact solution needed? We tried making this, and it didn’t form a ball after adding the contact lense solution.
Oh really? darn, sorry to hear that —(Make sure it contains boric acid and sodium borate for it to work.) – We used Blink brand
I do not recommend Borax straight from the box with kids. This can easily get into their eyes and skin… My daughter and I have been using the Baking Soda and contact solution with great results for slime!
I keep trying to find an answer to this, but maybe you might know, if I buy the premade like slippery wet slimes they have, does mixing those with these clays work just fine or no?
