I would think this would be very bulky. For travel years ago, I purchased inflatable bed rails. Those worked well. When I forgot them once, I substituted pool Fun Noodles. Worked great! Inexpensive, so I left them for trash at the hotel, to save car space on the way home.

I put the pool noodle under the mattress pad on the side. Just do a web search for “pool noodle bed” and you’ll see lots of pictures.
some people use duck tape, but I just have it as a little “bumper” under the mattress pad
