Curious about what Hulu Original TV shows are worth watching? Here are a few team faves…

The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

“So I secretly enjoy watching the The Handmaid’s Tale when my kiddos are in bed – sound asleep. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT watch this show with kids around. It’s creepy, disturbing, hair-raising, unpleasant, and did I mention creepy? It’s often hard to watch, but then at the same time – hard to not watch. The main character, Elisabeth Moss, is an incredible actress who shows such raw emotion and makes the show binge-worthy. There’s something to be said about a show that you talk about long after the show is over.”

11.22.63 Hulu Original

11.22.63: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

James Franco plays the role of Jake Epping, an ordinary high school teacher, who is presented with a chance to change history. When a longtime friend (Chris Cooper) shows Jake how to travel back in time, he tasks Jake with a mission he has been trying in vain to complete: stopping the assassination of John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, and solving one of the biggest mysteries of the 20th century. Jake quickly learns that the past does not want to be changed, and that his attempts to divert the course of history can quickly turn dangerous.

“This miniseries is based on Stephen King’s book of the same title. I like that it tackles a question I think we’ve all asked: would – or should – we change the past if it were possible? A teacher (played by James Franco) goes back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK, but finds out there are unintended consequences to even the best intentions. There are elements of humor, romance, suspense and drama, and it kept us engaged from start to finish!”

Castle Rock Hulu Original

Castle Rock: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Stephen King multiverse is the setting for this psychological horror series that takes place in Castle Rock, Maine, which is a location familiar to fans of King’s work. “Castle Rock” explores themes and worlds that unite King’s canon, including the infamous Shawshank Prison. An anonymous phone call lures death-row attorney Henry Deaver back to Castle Rock. He is unsettled by his hometown, but he returns to help a sinister, mostly mute man being kept in a cage underneath Shawshank.

“I’m a huge Stephen King fan, and Castle Rock – which is set in Stephen King’s fictional town of the same name – ticks all my check boxes. True King fans will love the hidden connections the story makes with characters from other books (Carrie, The Shawshank Redemption & more), but even non-King fans (like my hubs) loved the twists and turns. I can’t wait for Season 2!”

The Good Place on Hulu

The Good Place: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself in the afterlife, she’s both relieved and surprised that she’s made it into the Good Place. But it doesn’t take long for Eleanor to realize she’s there by mistake. She hides in plain sight from the Good Place’s architect Michael and his all-knowing assistant Janet. Her seemingly perfect neighbors Tahani and Jianyu and open-hearted soul mate Chidi help her realize that it’s never too late. With the help of her new friends — and a few enemies — Eleanor becomes determined to shed her old way of life in hopes of discovering a new one in the afterlife.

“I love this show! It’s funny and it’s also clean for a family to watch! It’s a comedy that you can laugh at with morals! Each episode really gets my family thinking about the choices we make every day – real choices and hard choices. Each episode keeps us wanting more!”

Go for the option WITHOUT commercials. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

    • Suzanne H

I was coming here to make the exact same comment! My husband, knowing I’m frugal, signed us up for the $5.99 option. I didn’t even know there was an $11.99 no commercial option. My SIL visited and asked why we had commercials on Hulu. Once I found out, I switched immediately. The commercials on Hulu are awful – they claim to be “limited” – NO! – they disrupt the show constantly and play the EXACT SAME commercials over and over and over… Just pay the extra $6 and save your sanity!!!!

      • MCouzens

Exactly, I wouldn’t mind the commercials nearly as much if they changed it up like on regular tv.

    • Elizabeth with an s

I can’t second this more!! The commercials were somehow extra annoying.

  2. mjandres

can we do this if we already subscribe?

    • Dkp91576

I got this offer during xmas (plus I had an Amex offer for cash back) so I just cancelled my account and registered again using a different person and email in the house.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi there! I find the details to list for “New and eligible returning customers only”. Hope that helps!

    • Julie

Yes you can! Just email through the help link on your Hulu account.

  3. Angelica

    Love the Handmaid’s Tale!

  4. Brenda

We cut the cord about 6 months ago and could not be happier. Pretty much everything we want is on Hulu. Spring for the no commercials.

  5. Erin

FYI, Spotify for students also includes HULU + Showtime for 4.99 per month, which is the best deal in the streaming game. If you have access to .edu email, you can sign up.

Thanks for sharing this tip Erin!

  6. Riss

Does the $11.99 Hulu air TV shows a day later? I don’t need to watch live shows as I just recorded them on the DVR before I cut the cord. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime, but I’m missing my shows! Thanks.

    • Riss

PS. What about NFL channel? Can we get it if we pay extra? Thanks again.

      • Brenda

You can get some NFL games if you go to Hulu live which is $40 a month. Depends on your location. Missing NFL games was our biggest worry cutting the cord. The best option for us was youtube tv. So we “splurge” for that for 4 months.

    • Pam

Yes it shows them a day later . BUT General Hospital shows the same day episode for me at 7pm CST. I agree with everyone about the no commercials package! Grey’s anatomy and a few shows have a commercial at the beginning and at the end but most shows are commercial free. Love Hulu!

  7. TheQueenBee

The Good Place is on Netflix, seasons 1 and 2. Is Hulu making the next season?

  8. Jamie

We love ‘The Good Place.’ We also watch ‘Last Man Standing’ and ‘Superstore.’ Go for no commercials- the commercials we had on our Hulu were inappropriate.

  9. Kylie

Hello…could someone tell me if Hulu, Netflix, or any of the others offer HALLMARK or LIFETIME movies ? Trying to get rid of cable but love those two channels…thanks for any help

    • Just passing through

Maybe check out PlayStation vue. I think it’s up to $45 a month tho but it has a lot of channels

      • Kylie

        Thank you just passing through!

    • Kase120

Amazon has lifetime channel for an extra fee, and a hallmark movie channel for extra as well. Hallmark has their own streaming service, I think it’s 4.99/mo and has a one week free trial.

      • Kylie

        Thank you kase120!

    • Lauryn

Directv Now has Hallmark, hallmark murder & mysteries, and Lifetime included in their base package for $40

      • Kylie

        Thanks, laurn

does anyone know if the handmades tale is on Netflix or amazon?

    • ana

      Handmaid*

    • Mel

      Nope. It’s a Hulu original.

    • Julie

It is on Vudu & Fandango on my Roku device

  11. Suz A.

Why is The Good Place on this list? It is not on Hulu or made by Hulu.

    • k

the good place is on hulu. they may not have it right now since its between seasons, but when it returns this season it will be there.

  12. Casey

If there are a lot of cable tv show you watch then Hulu is for you. Also, the limited commercials don’t bother me.
The Handmaids Tail is such a good show. Trying to get my mom to start watching it.

  13. Anna

We like Netflix for the kids (and ourselves) how does Hulu compare? Would it be worth replacing Netflix? Thx!

    • mel

You can watch current seasons of many shows the next day after they air. I have both Netflix and Hulu. I much prefer Netflix. Also, Hulu doesn’t have the capability to download shows for watching on the go like Netflix does. (Although they’ve been saying for awhile that it’s coming…..I’ll believe it when it happens)

  14. cielo0

I get hulu for free through Sprint. It has commercials. I dont mind it at all. It gives me a break so I can grab more snacks lol.

    • ana

I have sprint too, how do you get it for free?

  15. SuperDawn

I have the limited commercials version which I don’t mind terribly. I tried the no commercials once but I still got commercials for some select ABC shows I watch so I felt that was pointless to pay for extra. I loved 11.22.63 — it was excellent! I also love The Good Place. I was into Handmaids Tale until the season two ending which pissed me off so much that I think i’m done with the show. I watched all of Castle Rock …another one where I got to the end and was like, “why the hell did I waste my time on that!”
