favorite baby proofing products from munchkin – dual-action latch installed on a kitchen cabinet

Hi there Hipsters! It’s Stacy, one of the Hip2Save Sidekicks down here near Dallas, Texas!🙋🏻‍♀️

And guess what?! I am pregnant… again! Yup, come January, my husband and I will meet our fifth bundle of joy! Yes, you read that right, FIVE kids! I feel like that kind of makes us experts in the area of baby-proofing.

Dreamtime Door Knob Covers

Our oldest kiddo is just about to turn 21, so we’ve been doing this baby-proofing thing since the late 90’s 😳 – which means we’ve seen lots of different products come and go. And, we definitely have some we hate, like Dreamtime doorknob covers that crack like a plastic Easter egg when you barely touch the knob.

BUT, there is a product we found that we totally love: Munchkin Xtraguard Dual Action Multi Use Latches.

Sure, there are some cabinets we don’t feel the need to baby-proof like the one with the plastic storage containers. Our 18-month-old seems to be particularly drawn to that cabinet. But, there are others that contain cleaning items or heavy cookware that she really does not need to be messing with.

We’ve tried the Safety 1st latches, but they require quite a bit of time to install and are so narrow that they start to bend downward after time, rendering them useless. They have wider latches now that are spring-loaded which probably solved the problem of bending downward, but it’s still quite a bit of installation. Did I mention we’re expecting #5?! We’re looking for easy here, folks!

So my search led us to the Munchkin Xtraguard Dual Action Multi Use Latches.

These were SO EASY to install as they come with adhesive backing similar to Command Strips. Just peel off the back and stick it where you need it, then leave it for 24 hours before use. We installed the first one over nine months ago and those latches are holding great. Now, we have them all over the house!

The dual operation buttons make it simple enough for adults to use (plus older kids and grandparents), but a toddler cannot get into them. The flexible strap allows these nifty latches to be used for almost all babyproofing in the house including cabinets, drawers, appliances, toilet seats, and more. Seriously, these work almost anywhere, and they can even go around corners.

So, that’s it! These latches stay put, work great, and keep my littles safe – all without requiring tools to install. Even better, they don’t damage surfaces! You can’t beat that!

Curious if Munchkin sponsored this? Nope! They don’t have a clue that I called out their awesome product!

I’d love to hear what your favorite baby products are! They are always coming out with new things and it can sure be overwhelming.

Would these work on stainless steel appliances like a mini fridge?

    • Lisa

I used to use these on a stainless steel garbage can to keep my dog out of it. It was the first of 4 baby locks that he could not open!

      • AP

        Thats genius! Thankyou!

  2. MaaMaaBear

Love these!!!! I used them all over my house- refrigerator, washer/dryer, snack closets…. everywhere! These are my sanity! 😊

    • Stacy

Totally, MaaMaaBear! We have them all over too!

  3. Elena

Those latches really are the best!

Congrats on #5! How exciting!! My kids are both older, but I have a cat who likes to open cabinets and get into stuff so I’m going to try these. They will look better than the current tape and rubber band situation we have going on now, lol. Thank you!

    • Stacy

LOL, HudsonBelle! Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention! You’ll love these! Thanks so much for the congrats; we are way excited to welcome our 3rd boy!

I loved these stove knob covers by safety first! Safety 1st Child Proof Clear View Stove Knob Covers (Set of 5) Currently $7 amazon add on.

    • Stacy

Ooh, I’ll have to check those out! We have a double over and she has just recently started climbing it! Fortunately, she’s not heavy enough to make the door pop open.. yet. It won’t be long which means it won’t be long before she can reach knobs too.

I like the sliding locks so I don’t have to stick anything. The biggest challenge with baby proofing for me is training the husband to close the gates and lock the locks 😂

    • Stacy

Ha, Sara! I totally feel your pain.. though it’s probable reverse in my situation and my hubs wishes I would use them more. 🙂

  9. Samantha

These work great for kid-proofing the oven door!

I love these! I have one on my freezer door since it pops open a crack when the fridge is shut (freezer on top). My husband and I don’t always notice, and our 3 year old is allowed in the fridge, but can’t react the freezer. I also love our magnetic cupboard locks. They’re kind of a pain bc you have to use a magnet key each time, but I like that you can’t see them. Our cupboards are all in one area, so it isn’t too much trouble. You can disengage them temporarily as well, so our 3 y/o is now allowed in a couple of the cupboards with locks without removing them completely. I will engage them again when our baby starts crawling. It’s also nice when company or house sitters come… I disengage the locks so there’s less frustration! (A house sitter once broke a drawer lock by forcing it open!)

We have these for our cabinets and the kid’s closet doors. They are the only thing that my toddlers haven’t managed to figure out…and believe me, they’ve tried! Haha

  12. Sheena

We love these so much that I always keep a spare set in the house. Seems like there is always a new place I want to use them. Best baby proofing product i have tried.
