That’s wonderful to hear. It won’t kill anyone to just stay home & relax or enjoy a day off. We never go out anywhere on Thanksgiving day.

    • iamkris10

Agreed! It puts folks in a difficult place, i think, to have to choose to earn that extra bit or to not work that day. Retail folks don’t get many breaks at all – so it’s good to get at least a little one before it gets super busy.

Past few years I’ve been almost done with my Black Friday shopping before Thanksgiving Day since a lot of stores have it online so early.

  3. Maggie

I wish they were all closed.

    • riss

Amen, sistah! I like to shop and I love good deals and heavy discounts, but I’d love it even more if stores are closed and people are spending time with their loved ones on Thanksgiving. Except for people who work in the hospital and in the public safety, I don’t see any reason why companies/stores should be open. Let’s bring back the shopping madness on black Friday!

  4. Nancy

I would like to see Target, Walmart, Best Buy and other main big box stores close so more family would be available to gather as a family on what should be a day for families. Frustrating when so many young kids all work for the big box stores and no one can gather, just sad!

    • Krista

I so agree with you, Nancy! One of my son’s worked for Target for 3 years and he always had to work Thanksgiving and Black Friday as well as Christmas Eve. He’s in a management position for a different store now and he’s closing the store for Thanksgiving so he and his staff can enjoy spending time with their families.

    • Denise Pullens

Amen! I think all the stores and restaurants should be closed on Thanksgiving Day😇 It is a time for Thanksgiving with family and friends🙏

  5. Debbie

I’m glad to see the list seems to be growing each year!

  6. Meg

I wish they would all close. I get my shopping done during sales all year. Can’t afford to shop all at once anyway! I will go out on Black Friday but it’s more to get some warm pjs and small seasonal items.

  7. Mary

Agree, agree! Years ago it was an event with my friends. Meet each other in the parking lot at some ridiculous time, get coffee and hit the sales. About 6 or so years ago, I gave it up entirely. I loathe that commercialism has taken over Thanksgiving.

  8. Laura

Good! Thanksgiving is about the dinner and Cowboys 🏈 game!!

  9. Anne K

Agree with all the above posts. Love my deals, but love love love my family more. Glad the sales associates at these stores will have the time off with their loved ones. God bless the sales person who will have to work this year. I feel for them.

  10. Leona

I am glad to hear of many more stores closing. People deserve to be with their families. I remember when the Holiday’s were about giving thanks and spending time with loved ones! (I’m only 40.. LOL)

  11. Lindsey

This makes me happy! Spend time with your family 😍

  12. Shannon

They need to close all them! This year we are hoping to do an experience Christmas rather than a present Christmas. There was a post about that here where Colin and family went to Peru and I was inspired by it so much! We recently moved into a small temporary place and I don’t want any stuff!!

  13. Nubianqueen

Teach the true meaning of the Holiday not all this commercial nonsense. Spend time with family and friends. All the retail stores want is your hard earned money. Most people can’t afford to buy half the stuff they purchase. I give all year round so no need to be excited about 12/25 just another day. Thanksgiving another day to be with family and friends. Go Cowboys hope to be at the game this year

    • Lynne

The true meaning makes it more than “just another day.”

  14. Nubianqueen

Restaurants can be open some people rather pay someone to do the cooking for them. No mess to clean up afterwards.

  15. Rachel

In Maine, large retailers are banned from opening on Thanksgiving, with a few exceptions (LL Bean is one). The big stores do open at midnight on black friday. Up until the late 80s, stores were also closed on Sundays in Maine.

    • ecroston

It’s an odd law, isn’t it? Any store under 5,000 sq. ft. can be open, any with less than 5 employees, and some other odd exceptions like LL Bean. I don’t mind it one bit though. Back when I worked in Freeport, I was always so glad that I didn’t have to go into work until midnight, rather than on Thanksgiving.

  16. Melissa

Warms my heart to see the list.

I understand where everyone is coming from saying that nothing should be open so people can be home with their families but please allow me to give another perspective.

Sometimes, people would rather be at work than alone on a holiday. For many years, I was one of them. My already small family had a rift and I was pretty much on my own for several years. It was far less painful to be at work and interacting with people and knowing that I was at least earning some cash than to be sitting home alone with no plans.

Things are different now, my family is much smaller but the few of us who are left do make a point of spending the holidays together, but I have still volunteered to work a few times so that people who had to travel out of town could do so without working. We’ve just arranged our gathering around my work schedule for the day.

When I was a restaurant manager, I asked for volunteers to work holidays and took care of customers myself so that I didn’t need a full staff if not enough people volunteered. Most places I’ve worked at operate that way.

I was going to say something similar. I work at Kohls and was talking to a lady one day on our break on thanksgiving night. Her family was far away and she did not get together with anyone during Thanksgiving. I was wondering if she was happy being with all of us on Thanksgiving night.

We are not required to work on Thanksgiving night. If we choose not to work Thanksgiving night, we need to work a long shift on Friday. So we can work Thanksgiving and a shorter shift on Friday. Or skip Thanksgiving and work one long shift on Friday. But on our sign up sheet, the Thanksgiving slots fill up first. It is a fun high energy evening to work. And we are paid more than other days. I spend the morning with family. Eat dinner at 3pm and then head to work. Dad then spends some quality time alone with the kids when I am gone.

I always crack up when I read all of the posts about how “stores should all be closed on Thanksgiving for family time” While I agree that it’s great sentiment, seems like all of the people that want stores closed for people to be together, are not bothered by all of the other non essential workers that have to work!!!!! People LOVE to watch football on Thanksgiving, do they ever both to think about all of the people that have to work to make that happen??? Opening up stadiums for games takes tons of man power!!! Someone must seat people, provide security, clean bathrooms, serve food and drinks etc. etc. etc.!!! Then there is all of the people that work to keep airports operating, again food service, cleaning bathrooms, security, etc. etc.!!! Then there are gas station attendants, toll operators, staff at hotels etc.!!! No one thinks about all of those folks and happily use their services if needed, but God forbid, if someone works at a big box store all you hear is, “let them be with their family”!!!!

    • Flgrl

Agreed with all of this. We live in Chicago and a lot of the restaurants are open for Thanksgiving. We always go out to eat because I don’t cook. My husband tips extra because it’s a holiday.
Doesn’t bother me when the stores open early. Some employees like it because they earn extra because it’s a holiday and they would rather just go to work that evening than have to get up super early like they used to.

  19. Sara

If I needed to have a job, I would prefer the extra pay from working Thanksgiving/Black Friday. I am single with no kids. I only spend Thanksgiving with my mother because she expects it. I would rather be home alone than spend any holiday with my extended family. I don’t like feeling obligated to spend time with them or anyone else. It should be something I want to do.
