walmart savings catcher changes walmart pay – Apple Pay iPhone

Attention Walmart shoppers! 🛒

If you’re a Walmart shopper, their Savings Catcher program and Walmart Pay are two great tools ensuring you’re not paying too much for your purchases and can pay (and get receipts) easily. Specifically, Walmart’s Savings Catcher compares your receipts to advertised prices from top stores in your area. When it finds a lower advertised price, you’ll get the difference back in a Walmart eGift card!

Within one week after picking up your groceries, just enter your Walmart Grocery receipt into the Savings Catcher section on the Walmart mobile app. Your rewards are automatically transferred to a Savings Catcher eGift Card each time they’re earned, and the eGift Cards are automatically saved to your Walmart.com account. You can then use the rewards to shop both online or in-store.

BUT, there are NEW Changes to Savings Catcher…

walmart savings catcher changes walmart pay – Savings Catcher Walmart eGift Card

Effective October 29th, 2018, Savings Catcher changed their accepted payment methods, and Walmart Pay is now the only way to submit your receipt to Savings Catcher. Due to this change, users can no longer scan paper receipts within the app or submit via desktop. However, this change will allow you to both submit and spend your Savings Catcher rewards within the same Walmart Pay experience.

The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Walmart Pay at checkout

Here’s how Savings Catcher works now:

Rather than scanning paper receipts using the Savings Catcher scanner after paying, you’ll simply create an eReceipt using the Walmart Pay scanner when paying. Here’s how:

  1. Enroll in Walmart Pay.
  2. Use Walmart Pay at checkout to create an eReceipt for submission:
    • Open Walmart Pay and select credit, debit, or gift card.
    • Use Walmart Pay to scan the QR code at the register to generate your eReceipt.
  3. Tap “Submit Receipt” directly from your Walmart Pay confirmation page or from your Savings Catcher dashboard on the Walmart app

What are the benefits of using Walmart Pay?

  • One touch submissions: Submit your eReceipt before even leaving the store!
  • Save time and space: Reduce wallet (and purse) hassles when you turn your phone into your secure mobile wallet.
  • Store your purchase history: Find your past purchases in your Purchase History, easily reorder your essentials, or start a Mobile Express Return—all within the app!
  • Print eReceipts for cash back apps: Select a purchase from your Purchase History, share, and print from your phone or email yourself your eReceipt. Then submit for cash back apps like Ibotta and Checkout51.

What do you think? Will this change the way you shop Walmart?

Definitely NOT going to be continuing to use the Savings Catcher now…absolutely ridiculous that i can’t “scan” my walmart receipt! I have no problem using the Walmart pay but i do NOT do the shopping in my household..my hubby does..and brings home the receipt…the app is on MY phone! I only shopped at Walmart because of the Savings Catcher…there’s nothing really we need specifically at Walmart so I’ll be checking out Winco, Albertsons and other local stores and what kind of deals/apps they have. Bad move Walmart!

    • Michele H

Agreed, totally pissed at Walmart !

    • Toni

AGREED! I now know why the scan receipt option has disappeared from a savings catcher section in my app. I’ve been trying for 4 days to contact Walmart after trying to submit for receipts from this past week the Savings Catcher. I don’t use my phone at cash registers. It’s a pain in the butt. They need to give people the option to choose which way they want to do it. They just screwed me.

      • Hayley

Same here! Is there any way to add a receipt after the fact? And does this mean that it will automatically use any credit you have in walmart pay?

    • Lisa A

This is ridiculous!!! Hopefully when they lose a bunch of customers they will switch it back. 1) I’m not connecting my credit card. 2) My husband does some of the shopping. 3)I WANT a PAPER receipt!!! I need it for 5 other apps. 4) I like to let my savings build.
I guess I will be shopping at Meijer and Super One

    • VICKIE A FRYE

I agree, I use other methods to pay, cash for instance.just another way 5th not get money beck.

  2. Eric

Well, I was having difficulties staying with walmart. This does it for me, so, I am divorcing walmart. Why are they forcing individuals to setup walmart pay with your credit card? It is ridiculous. I understand that they want to use it to market your shopping profile to you, but forcing us to setup in “their” site our credit card is just not happening. Go bye Walmart, welcome Amazon.

    • Marie A Rock

i agree, I used to let my savings build up and at the end of the month when money is tight I used it to get things i need. Boo Walmart

  3. Sandra McPhail

This really sucks, now I have to hold up the line fiddling with my phone when they only have 2 out of 32 registers open??? Screw you WalMart!!!!!!

  4. Elmo Swinn

I would rather scan my receipt. I am always in a hurry trying to get out of Walmart. Definitely a deal breaker for me with the Savings Catcher.

  5. Wendy

So now you can’t pay with cash? Well you can, but you can’t use the savings catcher. There’s times I just run in an grab stuff that I know is on sale at another store and if it’s just a quick trip I may only have cash on me or my husband might grab it using his card. So can I go back to bringing my newspaper ads in and receive price match right there? That way I can spend the savings elsewhere? Nice way to mess up a good thing, Walmart.

  6. John C

Guess I’m done with walmart. I will take my money elsewhere until this is fixed. Im a disabled ebt/cash user who will no longer be able to scan receipts.

  7. Michele Minguzzi

Not happy about this! I have tons of receipts and I like to choose which Ones I add now I have to do it at checkout and can only scan 5 a week ?!?!?! Change it back! Not happy at all

  8. Marie A Rock

I already have major issues with Walmart but this is crazy. I don’t want to use my savings when they want me to. I want to save them top get a special item or when money is low in our household. Just do away with saving catcher because everyone hates it. And shame on those people who somehow cheated on scanning receipts

  9. Kellee

I went to Walmart tonight and forgot about this change. Now I have 2 receipts that are no good. I will only go to Walmart as a last resort from now on unless they allow me the option to scan my receipts again for Savings Catcher.

    • Scott

I tried scanning a receipt today and it reads it but looks like it’s only good for having an electronic receipt but little else.

I was under the impression that I could still pay cash but had to hold up the line and generate the ereceipt.

  10. Randy Warren

Stupid, stupid, stupid! How egalitarian of Walmart to think that everybody even has a smart phone. Plenty of people over 60 don’t but still shop at Walmart. And what about those of us who have sworn off plastic (credit or debit)? There are still plenty of shoppers who only use cash! Whoever came up with this needs to go work for Dollar Tree.

  11. Kelly Bocek

Very disappointed. I also had a receipt to scan from a few days ago that is still within the 7 days and now I learned you can’t. Deal breaker for me, too. Hopefully they’ll make some changes. 😔

  12. Reuby

My Parents, my siblings families and my family are all discontinuing Walmart shopping as of today. We migrated over the past few years from Publix/Winn-Dixie and my parents up north, Kroger due to not needing to read savings ads. Overall it has been a choice of poor health and poor product but we stayed so we could best steward our money. Six-figure households would rather spend their time NOT cutting coupons due to work schedules too, just as much as low income households. We will all be moving our perscriptions back to CVS & Rite aid, respectively.
Publix, Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods & Amazon prime.

We are just 5 households. I won’t assume the numbers financially that we alone bring in. However, if the general public follows, this is another poor attempt on Walmart’s part. I am sure they have their reasons, though.

As for our families, it’s back to better, fresher and healthier food at lower cost. Honestly after writing it all out, I’m a bit relieved. Walmart is sun-par in all areas and i am looking forward to healthy options and fresh meat & produce again, now that my family has made this decision.

  13. Barb

I hate this way!!! Absolutely inconvient!!! Horrible and disgusting

  14. Aretha Bates

Walmart You Suck…!!! You Give and You Taketh Away…Not good business

  15. Lisa Wright

If it ain’t broke don’t fix ,wait maybe I should clarify that if it benefits the customers do away with it . Having savings catcher helped families save some
So we have to do away will that . Well you’re busiest time of year coming up this might not be the best decision . The old saying in retail sales Ive heard has been the customer is always right . Time will tell

  16. EMP Firefighter

This is the worst thing Walmart could do to customers. My wife does all the shopping at Walmart and only has a flip phone (not smart phone) and is not able to use the Walmart app. We pay only with checks. Walmart is biased and profiling users without a smart phone. Walmart kiss our business goodbye.

  17. Ashley Fuller

This method seems to only work if you use the self checkout lanes. Plus, I don’t want to use my savings each time, I like to let them build up as well. Wal- Mart this is horrible- GO BACK TO THE OLD WAY! I have a receipt that I need to submit and I cant because I used a regular lane.

  18. Sandi Christiansen

I was already frustrated shopping at Walmart after their restructure in our city. Each time I go in, I find another one of my preferred brands gone and replaced by Great Value. I am selective about what Great Value products I buy and I’m not going to be forced to buy Great Value. I am getting tired of the cashier asking me, “Did you find everything okay.” I’ve now been shopping there just for sundry items and only to pick up odds and ends, milk, eggs, etc. I have a receipt that is no good and seeing this being forced to use Walmart pay is the last straw for me. I’m so gone. I have started going to Fred Meyer. It is quite the drive, but I can find what I am looking for and they have a great selection.

  19. Sue Griffin

Not happy about this at all, my shopping at Walmart is about to be cut down seriously.

  20. Jk

Well they just made sure Walmart will not be my first stop anymore.

  21. steve

What happens when I send my kid to go shopping and he doesn’t have my phone. Seems like we are all suckered into this. Entrapment, would be a better way to explain Walmarts use of trying to dictate how we pay.

  22. Trudy Lambert

I definitely will not use walmartpay . I WILL SHOP AT PUBLIX FOR THE BOGO where they still recognize cash as a major currency. I do not think it would be easier to pull out my phone , pull up an app, while standing in the checkout line loading 2 hundred dollars of items into my buggy and watching the register to make sure I am not overcharged which does happen on occasion. Publix is a much better shopping experience anyway I will only have to drive farther. Thumbs down to Walmart and whoever made these inconsiderate changes.

  23. Rene

Walmart you suck!!! Whomever came up with this change should be fired!!!
Shoppers do not want to be forced to use your app every time they check out!!!! Nor should we have to!!!!

  24. Domenica snowden

The nicest way to say it ….. this is shit ! Period.

  25. Trent Melcher

I feel this is a bad move for Walmart. Good thing there is plenty of competition out there, I will be switching to exclusively going to Target now. If I can’t enter my receipts on a computer anymore to get some savings from Walmart, no point shopping there.

  26. T Cook

Time to really do all my shopping at Safeway, Fred Meyer, or Winn-Dixie. Was told by Corporate Wal-Mart that all the Cashiers were trained to ask if I would like to get the “e-Receipt”, before I was to check out, and the Cashier would help me through the steps. They don’t! I wasn’t suppose to have to use the money’s saved already on my Wal-Mart gift card, I could till use my debit card to pay without it being attached through Wal-Mart Pay. Nothing but lies!!! Oh and “John” at Wal-Mart Corp, find a new job. Good bye Wal-Mart, I’m joining everyone else in moving my money to other stores. Will be much happier. And YES “Great Value” is horrible!!!!

  27. Scott

I think y’all are missing the point here.
Wal-Mart apparently was losing too much money because people were actually using it.

Now it’s pretty much a pain to use and you become wart in the checkout lane at Wal-Mart.

I’ve used it as long as it wasn’t an pain to use.

    Those days are gone.

    • Liz

Exactly. Which is also the reason that when the program first started it checked the receipt against 25 different stores in my area and now it only checks against 5. They finally realized how inaccurate it was for them to think they would always have the cheaper prices!

      • Scott

Often times mine would suddenly “can’t find your receipt” and it would simply disappear. I guess that was due to finding too many “better” prices with competitors.

  28. Alice Lawrence

My phone is pretty much only for emergencies and is not connected to the net. That means no Walmart app. I guess I won’t be using the Savings Catcher anymore. It was nice while it lasted!

    • Grace LaRocque

Same Here. Do not have cell phone. So how do I get the money that i have been saving up all year. Guess i can kiss it good by and Wal Mart also.

  29. Pat macrae

If they wanted to phase out savings catcher they are doing a good job. Done shopping there. The foreigners can have it. Moving to Safeway.

  30. Kristen

Walmart, this was a really bad move. Please reconsider this decision. Not a single person on this article is happy about using Walmart Pay. This is your customer base and you have made all of us reconsider how and where we will do our shopping. I am switching back to the credit card I used before being talked into the Walmart card. Listen to your customers.

  31. James Wingate

Won’t be shopping at WalMart anymore. They’ve succeeded in making something that was easy to use very difficult to use. I don’t want to have to use my cell phone to scan a QR code at the register when I’m checking out. There is already too much going on with watching the cashier ring up and bag my groceries then me having to put the bags in my cart then get to the card scanner to scan a card to pay. Again WalMart listen up … I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO USE MY CELL PHONE AT CHECKOUT TO SCAN A QR CODE. So we’ll just start shopping at Kroger, Publix, Lowes Foods and/or Food Lion which are all closer anyway. We won’t go out of our way anymore just to go to WalMart. You really blew this one WalMart. What WERE you thinking?

  32. James Wingate

I forgot to add … now WalMart is forcing us to use our cell phone to participate in the SavingsCatcher program and I wonder if the brainiacs that came up with this idea realize that half the time you can’t even get a cell phone signal inside the store. My wife and I are constantly frustrated by lack of signal in WalMart stores so we can’t exchange texts to locate each other if we’re separated. So easy to set up free WiFi to help their customers but they haven’t done it and apparently won’t do it. SMH …

    • juliepeterson

I hate this change, but every Walmart I’ve ever been to has free public WiFi. The thing is, with being forced to use Walmart Pay, I wouldn’t feel comfortable using the free WiFi because it’s a huge security risk since your credit card information would be sent when it processes the transaction.

      • Jerry L. Feador

Not to mention that logging into free wi-fi can be a real pain.

    • kriscrowdersheffield

      EXACTLY!!!!!

  33. Johnna

Not happy at all . I’m not going to be shopping at Walmart as much now . I’ll be shopping at aldi’s. They can’t force me to get another credit card!!!!!!!

  34. Diana

I feel this is a very bad move on Walmart’s part. Our local Walmart won’t do price matching since earlier this year (not sure if it’s everywhere) and now you can’t scan a receipt. It was very handy to have the receipts scanned into the app so the receipt could be thrown away. Not everyone has a smart phone or wants to put a credit or debit card on and use Walmart pay. Please, Walmart, change it back!

    • juliepeterson

You can still scan the physical receipt to have for your records but you can’t submit it to Savings Catcher unless you use Walmart Pay.

  35. Mark

Glad to see I’m not the only one pissed off at Walmart for this. Walmart just keeps giving me reasons to shop somewhere else. Savings catcher was one of the reasons I shopped at wal-mart but now I wont be using it for all the reasons listed above. I will be spending a little more at my local grocer but at least I will be getting a better selection.

  36. Diane

I didn’t realize you couldn’t pay cash anymore and still use the savings catcher. My husband pays cash for everything. Guess Walmart will lose us too. Savings catcher was a great idea and now it isn’t anymore.

  37. Heathrr

This is completely stupid, Now people will start bringing competitor adds back in and hold up the lines! And how do I get my online grocery purchases in without that option to add!

  38. Margaret Garcia

I can’t use my ebt card no more in savings catcher. Are you serious? Walmart switch back! this totally sucks. And using at the register now takes time and I’m usually in a rush to get out of there.

  39. Karen

Completely and totally UNHAPPY about this change. I enjoyed saving up to get something special. Now, I can’t do that anymore. I won’t use the new program.

  40. Cindy Weeks

I hate the new way of savings catcher. I had no idea it changed until I went to scan my receipt. GUESS YOU WILL BE SAVING MONEY WALMART CAUSE I WILL NOT BE USING IT. CHANGE IT BACK !!

  41. Delka

Yea I’m totally ticked off!! I have enjoyed using the saving catcher almost 3 years now. I always pay cash. Now they want to force you to use electronic trans money. I guess I won’t be getting anymore rewards. Oh and you cannot complain to anyone 🤬😡🤬😡

  42. Marlene

I am as disgusted with WalMart as I am with cable…which I dropped for Roku/Hulu. I already hated shopping @ Walmart unless we needed to for item specific things or our budget. Now it looks like I have more reason to permanently switch to Kroger’s other than their fresh organic produce & meats. I too pay with cash or sometimes my husband & I take turns doing the shopping. He is NOT electronic savy at all and sometimes the app has trouble connecting in the stores. We like to let our savings build for larger items or special things like Halloween candy since we have so many kids in the area. My parents are retired 75 yr olds… old school and do not have cell phones or use plastic. Not fair to them either.

  43. Darlene

I agree it was a poor choice to discontinue the savings catcher. I do not like using my phone for my payment. I tried to use Walmart pay today- I told cashier I wasn’t sure how to use it and he said me either. If they want us to use it then the help should be able to explain it to us.

  44. John bugay

I use Walmart grocery pick up all the time. You can not use Walmart pay as payment option in the Walmart grocery app. So there is no way to get that receipt into savings catcher. So I will be looking for another franchise to do my grocery shopping.

  45. Kodi

Absolutely agree! I’m pissed! I don’t do the household shopping my hubby does and now I can’t get the savings due to the app being on MY phone. No shopping at Walmart for me until the scan receipts option is back. They say it’s convenient but no not for me.

  46. Jeffrey A. Mclaurin

It’s just a new way for big stores to screw over their customers. Back in the old days stores did things to actually earn your business. Now they expect if you don’t shop there others will. The only way to Stop them is for enough people to say no more and take their business elsewhere. They wake up when you hurt their wallet

  47. Jason Mitchell

Pissed . I hate not being able to scan my receipt . will not be using Walmart any more

  48. Gary

I was at Walmart and the people at the register don’t even know how this process works. The thing is Walmart is not the cheapest on many items. All the produce is much higher than most stores. We don’t buy meat there because we’ve had very bad experience with that department. There is really no need to shop at Walmart anymore when we have other stores local to us. This was a very stupid idea on Walmart’s part. They probably did it to avoid paying out like the saving catcher did because not all people shop with credit cards. Just listen to all the remarks here.

  49. Terry

This is crap, I also do not do the shopping in my house, my husband does so he brings home the receipts and I scan them. Second we tried Walmart Pay and several times irs been down so we had to pay a different way. If that happens now you can’t submit your receipt. Last, my husband hates Walmart and prefers Meijers where they track points for you and you automatically get a amount off your purchase if you want to use your points right then. He only goes to Walmart because of savings catcher. From now on Meijers gets our business.

  50. Tiffany Taylorsville Georgia

Totally pissed with this! I vaguely remember now that they were going to change this but forgot about it and went to Walmart today. Bought ALOT of stuff and when I got to my car I went to scan my receipt as usually and the option wasn’t there so I googled the reason and then remembered. I have been finding great deals at Kroger and Ingles and after this bull I will be doing all my grocery shopping at those locations. I definitely don’t have to shop at Walmart especially when there is no longer that benefit for me to save up what accumulates in my savings catcher then spend it when I am ready! I should be able to scan my receipts as always but that is no more! After I spend what I have saved from previous transactions I will be deleting the app and supporting other stores in my community. Poor move Walmart!
