Walgreens Basket

Heads Up – Only a few more days to use your Bonus Points!

Starting November 4th, Walgreens is changing their Bonus Points redemption levels.

How do the new Walgreens Bonus Points work?

In a nutshell, every 1,000 points will equal $1 and the maximum redemption limit per transaction will be 5,000 points ($5 reward), which means that your points will be of less value as you accumulate them.

Walgreens Balance Rewards

Starting on November 4th, you’ll only be able to redeem points at the following five tiers below, which will include a new 4,000 point tier.

  • 1,000 points = $1 discount
  • 2,000 points = $2 discount
  • 3,000 points = $3 discount
  • 4,000 points = $4 discount
  • 5,000 points = $5 discount (max)

If you have a lot of points in your Balance Rewards account, consider using them before November 4th as the point values will be reduced by up to 20%. Plus, the maximum redemption will be limited to 5,000 points per transaction – instead of the current 40,000 limit.

Note that points cannot be redeemed to purchase alcohol, dairy, tobacco, prepaid cards, clinic services, prescriptions, pharmacy items or services, contact lenses, and photo orders not picked up in store.

once again, we are getting less and less for our money. walgreens is going backwards. this stinks I tell ya.
so I will be doing separate transactions from now on when I have several pts.
as a consumer, we sure do lose out. no more getting to use lets say 20,000+ pts in one transaction. whoopie $5.00 now, and walgreens prices are higher to begin with too. oh well. next they will do away with the rewards at some point. 🙁

For me, it just means shop there less. No incentive to spend a little extra money and get 10,000 extra points, etc. I am really disappointed. I would save up to $150-$200 in points and every summer, but all of the OTC items I need for the year for free! Now, forget it. I’ll just go to dollar tree to get my OTC items.

It could be my pregnancy brain but how are the point values reduced by 20%? I just thought they weren’t letting you redeem more than $5 at a time with the new program.

Right now 40,000 points are worth $50 (not $40) so there’s an incentive to save up points.

Thanks! I didn’t know that. I don’t think I’ve ever had that many points either!

      Good question

You have to blame it on that wonderful Extreme Couponing Show!!! I have been couponing way back before coupons were popular. When that Extreme Couponing show came on it showed people how to hoard and now companies can’t afford it! I loved to coupon to help our local food bank with personal care items, they never could get. So sad…

I cashed in 40 000 pts today! Great deals on diapers, Old Spice, and Nyquil. Thanks for the tips!

How do I cash in my points?

      • Ash

Cashed in means she redeemed her rewards.

Had my college kid cash in $50 in points this week. Now she’s all stocked up on snacks and personal care.

Darn I know someone that has over $1,000??? How? Who knows its bizarre…

I ordered my contact lenses last month online with walgreens.com as was able to use the max amt of points (40,000) for $50 towards my purchase.

  7. Melissa

I’ve spent $700 over the last month. I keep thinking I’ll spend them all and next thing I know I’m getting 30,000 bonus points for a transaction. Now I’m back up to $200. 😂

I’m really upset about this. I teach high school special need students. Walgreens is my go to place for toiletries, snacks, paper goods and school supplies because the point system. This kept me from getting angry that we are never in anyone’s budget. I also used my points to purchase baby formula online. With the point system I was able to get my price point to $7 a tub after rewards and taxes….

Just be sure you remember to use your points. I forgot last night and had to void my transaction. The cashier didn’t ask if I wanted to use points like they always do. As I was leaving after doing the transaction over again, she said they’re not supposed to ask if you want to use points. Which is really shady to me, hoping people forget they have points so they don’t use them up by November 4th? I know I haven’t shopped much at Walgreens in the last 6 months, after this change I won’t be shopping there if at all.

That happens at Ulta, they NEVER ask you if you want to use your points.

Same with me at any retailer that has this reward system. If my kids are with me, I tend to get distracted and forget to mention it.

Really appreciate you posting about this. Seems like Walgreens is giving very short advance notice of this change.

They announced it beginning of Oct. They sent an email about the change, and cashiers have been telling customers at ckout as well.

Thank you for the information!! Must make a Walgreens run tomorrow!!

  12. Andrea

I buy all of our beauty/personal items at Walgreens because of the beauty bonus and points system. It’s actually more convenient to shop at target or grocery store for these items. With this change, I’ll no longer make the extra stop at Walgreens.
