What is VIPKID?

VIPKID provides an international learning experience to children in China between the ages of 4-12. The company is headquartered in Beijing and offers fully immersive one-on-one English language instruction provided online by qualified teachers. The curriculum is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards and uses a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.

A few perks of working for VIPKID:

  1. Flexible Schedule
    • You can work from home or anywhere else that you want – no commuter traffic! You’ll be able to set your own schedule and work as few or as many hours as you’d like. (It’s recommended that qualified teachers be available for at least 7.5 hours of teaching time per week.)

  2. No lesson plans OR grading
    • VIPKID provides the lesson plans for you to choose from. They even communicate with parents so you don’t have to! You just need a computer, passion, and skills for teaching.

  3. No education degree required
    • You don’t need a degree in education to be a VIPKID teacher! All you need is a bachelor’s degree in ANY field AND one school-year of traditional teaching experience or the equivalent in mentoring, tutoring, or alternative education.

  4. Earn up to $22/hour from home!
    • Qualified teachers will teach English to young students online and will make between $14-$22 per hour. Your minimum pay will be determined by your demo class performance and incentives by your monthly class participation and completion.

  5. No teaching HUGE classrooms
    • Do large classrooms intimidate you? No worries! All VIPKID classes are one-on-one to ensure they meet 100% of each student’s needs.

Here are a few tips for your VIPKID interview!

There are two ways you can choose to interview with VIPKID. You can either book an interview for a 30-minute session where you showcase your teaching skills to a VIPKID recruiter. Or, you can record an interview with your demo lesson so that a VIPKID recruiter can evaluate you.

To be successful at the VIPKID interview, here are a few tips…

  • Practice the demo lesson PPTs.
  • Take a look at VIPKID’s Applicant Performance Indicators so you know what they’re looking for in candidates.
  • Teach from a place with good background and lighting.
  • Be sure you have a good internet connection.

“I have been with VIPKID for just over 100 days. It took what seemed like forever to start getting bookings, but once I hit about day 75, they started to trickle in. Now all of the time slots I open seem to get booked. I love being able to set my schedule. I can teach for a few hours on the weekend before my kids get up, and then still enjoy the rest of the day. If you have kids and toys around, you likely have what you need to easily enhance your lessons.”

“I too am going to jump on the bandwagon and say that I LOVE teaching with VIPKID! The children are precious and it’s so exciting to see them learn and grow! I have formed a special bond with my regular students and even some of their parents! (Some of my regular students and I write letters, send packages, and keep each other updated on our lives! It’s so fun!) I never expected that from this job! The pay is great and I love the flexibility.”

VIPKID has been such a blessing to my family. I have been teaching since January. I actually signed up from one of these posts. It took me seeing this posted about three times & doing a ton of research before I decided that I was ready to give it a try (I’m not good at going outside of my comfort zone) & I so regret not doing it sooner. We just recently bought my husband a brand new truck with the extra income! I teach about 150 classes a month & I am in the process of helping a couple teachers from our school district through the hiring process right now. It is something I 100% believe in or I wouldn’t be referring my friends, neighbors, & co-workers.”

I’ve thought of doing this.. I have satellite internet.. do you have to have high speed to be successful at this?

      • Danielle

Yes. You need high speed internet, a laptop or tablet that can run the platform, and headphones with a microphone.

        If you have Hughes net….no

        • Cera

    • Joe

    • Hazel Hess

I have always wanted to try this but I am scared about the whole process. Will you tell me what are the steps and how do I make sure I will be hired. Living paycheck to paycheck and would like to help earn some extra, Thank you.

  5. Laura

For those who teach, what do you make on average per month and how many hours do you work usually?

    • Sandy

Hi Laura, my first paycheck came in at $167, I hardly had any bookings, however it was during the summer when most students (I would later find out would be travel long abroad for long periods of time). However once school started in September my bookings became solid and I average out about $800/$900 a month. Note though I only work Monday through Friday 2 hours a day, but you can definitely make more if you open up more slots and be available on the weekend. I do like the flexibility. My mom was sick and I was able to block myself off for two weeks without penalty to take care of her. If you are interested I’m more than happy to help you with the process! 8. Kelley

They always deny me. My degree is in accounting but it says it doesn’t have to be education. I have no idea why.

    • Tonia

My degree is in ultrasound… My husband I have been doing this for a year now. I can help you through in wording everything if you need my help.

      • ZS

Do you have to have a bachelors? I went 5 years to X-ray and US school. Have two associates and homeschool my kids. Would love to do this!

      • Zs

I have an associates in US and certification in rad technology. I homeschool my kids and would love to do this. Would they take my degrees if not. Bachelors?

    • KRISTINA T BOZOARTH

Kelly, if you are looking for a work from home accounting position, check out 1800accountant. If you are an enrolled agent or CPA they will start you at $40 an hour and they are working on an incentive program based on performance. If you have your accounting degree you should be making way more than $22 an hour!

  9. Stephanie

For anyone considering applying, DO IT!!! This is an amazing job that affords you so much flexibility combined with great pay.

If anyone would like help with the application process or if you have questions about the teaching experience, feel free to e-mail me! SPacheco17@gmail.com I would be more than happy to help you get started! 😊

  10. Miriam

I have a degree in English and was a teacher before having my 4 kids. I keep getting the itch to try this out but what would the hours need to be for me to teach mornings or nights? I am on the East coast.

    • GAmommyof4

I’ve been with VIPKID for a year. I’m in ATL. Since the time change the prime hours for classes are 6-8 am. Before the time change it was 7-9. You can also get late night classes (mostly weekends). I used to do 9-midnight and then 7-10 on Saturdays when I needed extra $. Now I do just mornings. It is a LOT of fun! I told my husband a few days ago after my classes that I feel like I’ve found what I was made to do 😁

  11. Jennifer

I have a bachelors degree in public affairs but no real teaching experience. I worked in politics but am now a semi-retired stay at home mom. I’ve always wanted to do ESL but can’t leave my kids to go live in China/Japan for a year! How stringent are they on teaching experience? Are all of you who work for them from a teaching background? Thanks!

    • Sarah

I have worked with VIPKid for 1 1/2 years now. I have a Bachelor’s in Communications and no professional teaching experience, it has all been volunteer (church and community), raising my kids and home preschooling them. It totally counts! I would be happy to talk to you more about your experience and answer any other questions you have! teachersarahvipkid1@gmail.com

  12. Kali

Vipkid has been a blessing to my family that I can stay home and teach while my kids sleep. It has helped us to pay fiwn our mortgage and go on fun trips. If you love teaching kids, don’t mind flexible hours, and have a Bachelor’s degree in anything. You can do it! It is the best and these sweet little faces make it worth it! Any questions or help with the process…hit me up! kalissacotten@gmail.com.

  13. Ashley

I have a teaching degree, and a few years teaching experience, and I couldn’t get past the second mock trial. After all my preparation effort I felt pretty stupid for failing considering the fact that I have an degree.

    • Ashley

*an ed degree, sorry auto correct

    • Sarah

Aw! Don’t feel stupid! The hardest part about the entire interview process is the personality of the interviewer. My referral told me her interviewer was straight faced the entire time. It was hard for her to navigate around that. I have also heard others saying they thought they did really great during the mock and then failed, while others say they thought they bombed it and then passed. I wonder if you applied again and got a completely different person for your Mock if you would get through? You certainly have the experience they are looking for and need!

    Eww. Evil company.
