Reader Melissa gives back to serenity house by making a donation of items like this soap

‘Tis the season of giving

Given the spirit of the holidays, we asked our readers — “If you had an extra $100, who would you help and how?” Well, the Hip2Save community came forward with an endless amount of charities stationed all over the globe. ❤️

Our first winner, Melissa, chose a charity she’s been volunteering with for five years now — The Serenity House of Huntersville, NC. Their mission is to take care of those who are sick and who only have a few months left to live. To lessen the burden that comes with end-of-life care, residents stay in the home free of charge. Volunteers like Melissa make meals, administer medication, keep up hygiene, and spend time with residents. The Serenity House relies on donations of food, household essentials, cleaning supplies, and pretty much any other common home products.

For Melissa, she’s seen so many residents enter the home understandably sad – though, after just a few days with the volunteers, their smiles return. And it’s not just the residents who feel a lift of joy! The families are usually exhausted from working tirelessly to take care of their loved ones, so to feel some relief and see happiness come back to their family members is just as uplifting. While the residents, of course, need some love, their families feel just as valued.

Because the Serenity House needs to function like any other household, Melissa used her $100 gift card at Target to pick up staples for the home, such as laundry detergent, soap, coffee, trash bags, and more! We couldn’t be more thrilled to have a member of our Hip2Save Community so dedicated to bringing smiles to faces of others experiencing hardship.

Thank you, Melissa, for all you do!

We’re so inspired and so thankful Melissa shared her community impact story with us. Stayed tuned for even more giving back stories from Hip2Save readers that embody the true spirit of the holidays!

What a great cause! Thank you to those who volunteer. I’m sure this makes a huge difference in so many lives. I love reading about organizations like this because it’s not something you hear about everyday. Thank you Hip2Save for making donations go a little further and spreading kindness.

I couldn’t agree more, Suzanne! It’s amazing the impact that even just one volunteer can have on so many lives — Melissa is a perfect example of that! I’m glad you enjoyed her story and we have many more to come to bring a bit of goodwill and cheer to the season!

Wonderful! After reading that a few people have been scammed on the trading portion, it’s nice to hear someone doing something nice for someone else. Thank you for the smile! :o)

This is so heartwarming. I have been a teacher for 15 years. This year I am in a new school district at a new school and the amount of children that are not able to celebrate around the holidays breaks my heart. I work with the special needs population and after Thanksgiving several of my students told me they didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving because they did not have any food. I wish I was a little more financially stable this year to be able to provide food baskets to the family and small gifts to the children. As a mom and a teacher this breaks my heart.

Lu – what’s your email? I would be happy to help with small holiday gifts for your students.

This is so heart wrenching. So many of us (myself included) complain this time of year about having too much – too much food, too much stuff, etc. and this little guys and gals have so little.

  13. Marisa

Great – sent you an email.

One of my best friends grew up in Huntersville, NC! Funny to see it featured here. I’m so happy that they were given a little bit of $ to help folks at the end of their lives. To have a service like that, where people will not pass alone, is beyond amazing.

This is so awesome! With a world filled with nothing but bad news on the news this was a breath of fresh air. God bless you hip2save team and the volunteers for that amazing house!!!

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Right?! It’s so refreshing to be reminded of the good that can be present in this world. We’re so grateful for readers like Melissa who give back in such a selfless way. Just what we need this time of year!

This is wonderful. It’s what Christmas is all about

  17. Christy

This is truly beautiful. I’m in charge of the PTA at my child’s school. This year I made it my mission to do an Angel Tree for basic necessities, clothing, jackets, hats, coats, gloves, toiletries, gift cards, etc. for children in our school that are in need. Our school is a Title One school and almost 75% of the students are on a free or reduced lunch plan. These kids get sent home with blessings in their backpacks on Fridays to ensure that they have food over the weekend. So this year, I started rolling my Kohl’s cash and Target gift cards and I alone have already purchased enough for four of the children’s gifts. Black Friday deals definitely helped. So thank you to people like Hip2Save and all of you out there that help children/people in need everyday, but especially during the holiday season. You are all wonderful.

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I’m am so in awe of your generosity, Christy! What an amazing gift you’re providing for so many children. Thank you for all that YOU do and for being a bright part of the Hip2Save community. 💛

  18. Shannon

Wow that’s amazing! I didn’t know such a place existed. My step mother became my dad’s caregiver until his final days before he finally got into hospice where he passed less than 1 day later. I know it was hard on her to take care of him at the end.

Melissa, This made me tear up reading about your charity and the effort that you put into helping this organization. As someone who has gone through this recently, it is so heartwarming to see people like you who care so much for those who are going through the most difficult time of their lives, and to make things a little more comfortable for them and their families. Bless you and thank you to Hip2Save for their generosity.

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I felt the same way! It takes a special type of person to care for someone else’s loved ones during such a difficult time and make them feel at ease. We’re so lucky to have people like Melissa in our Hip2Save community who contribute to others in such a generous and selfless way.

    Love this!
