Make it a game night!

Board games and card games are such a fun and frugal source of entertainment for the whole family – and they make great gifts, too! But finding ways to save money when buying games is even better, right?!

  • If at all possible, play games several times before you purchase them. That way you’ll know that it will get played and not just take up space in your game closet.

  • Check your local thrift store, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. for used games before paying full price. That way if the kids get bored with it after a few plays, you won’t have forked out a ton of money on it.

  • Make your own version of a game. You may be able to recreate a game with items you already have on hand (dice, a deck of cards, paper, pencils, timer, etc). Plus, you can often find the game manuals online or on the manufacturer’s website.

“The Cards Against Humanity game is hilarious for anyone thinking about getting it. At family get-togethers the adults can’t wait to play this game. Even the men who normally don’t like board games love this one. NOT to be played around little ones – many things you don’t want them to hear, it can get pretty dirty.” – Hip2Save reader, Melissa

I was so excited to find Left, Right, Center (the one pictures above) at Dollar Tree. I bought one for me and two to add to gifts.

Thank you so much for this tip! I saw them on Amazon for 8.00 and thought that is a lot. After seeing your tip, I ran to our local Dollar Tree and grabbed 8 of them. We are going to introduce the game at Christmas eve party and then give one to each family before they leave. 🙂

I always watch YouTube videos for game plays and reviews. I’ve made so many of my own versions of games with dollar store products: Blokus, Lost Cities, Sequence, Qwirkle, Qwixx, Rolling America, Roll For It, & Tsuro! True, it does take time and work but it’s also a great family project! Not to mention you save tons of money!

We have lots of these, big board game family! Go Nuts for Donuts is so much fun!

Yay! So glad you have fun with these games, Rebecca!

My teens love board games. Thanks for these suggestions. One thing to be cautious about is the regular apples to apples game. I bought this version several years ago and was surprised at the content. We ended up donating it and buying the junior version. We still play this version today. Another game I had to go through and remove several cards from due to questionable content was What do you meme.

I got left center right at dollar tree

I recommend Labyrinth as a strategy game for kids (probably 8+)
