Thanks, H2S! Does anyone know if there are ever follow-ups to the winner? I’ve never seen an article or show (granted, I’ve never tried to search for it), just wondering do people actually win this and live in it? I’d love to watch!

Yeah, I’ve seen a couple but they all say that they couldn’t afford the taxes and either had to sell or BK.
Then they started adding the cash prize too which was supposed to help with the taxes incurred. I think it’s nice they finally have a cash option instead of the home. After taxes it’s still free money!

They do have a cash-out option if you don’t want the house. However, the dollar amount is substantially less than the market value of the home.

    Some things to think about:

The federal tax bill for either prize is extremely steep. I will be in the 22% bracket in the 2019 tax year. Either version of this prize would put me in the top bracket of 37%. My tax bill for the cash version would be $348,315. My tax bill for the house version would be $849,928. That doesn’t include state income taxes, closing costs, home insurance, property taxes, vehicle taxes, title, registration, car insurance, and other fees.

They might do a filmed “ambush style” visit to your home between 3/15/19 – 3/25/19. You would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. You might be required to travel to the house on Winner Weekend(3/28/19-3/31/19) at the sponsor’s expense.

Why is there such a huge difference between the taxes for the cash version and the house version?

      • Sara

The ARV of the house is $2,047,855.
The ARV of the car is $48,020. The total ARV for the house option is $2,345,875.
The total ARV of the cash option is $1,048,020. The calculations I made include my gross income of $57,855.

        • Calli

          Thank you Sara.

I enter every dream home contest …..because I’m a dreamer I look at this web site everyday…not just to enter but because winning this is more than I could ever imagine happiness for me and my family …We both work but it’s so expensive and stress full to stay in New York …we talk about moving to Minnesota,Maine,Carolina ‘s, Pennsylvania but Montana would be my ultimate place to live ..I would live here forget the cash option ….so I search and wish

It is a beautiful home, I’d love to win. I went through a bad divorce and lost Everything I was in a neurological hospital “Barrows Neurological Hospital” with the my house sold. My ex even went to the extent of taking my jewelry etc., and he didn’t even put me on our three childrens’ school records. This home is beautiful and would take me away from a city that the divorce laws are messed up. I was working with our governor, Janet Napolotanio about getting them changed but, fortunately, for her she was asked to join the “Obama” team when he became president.
