Just a heads up according to a review it is missing some important forms. Search tool not always accurate, and overall support still sketchy. No site navigation tool.
Also the company gets paid for the credit card and loan recommendations it makes to you in the main Credit Karma service (the tax service doesn’t display ads).

    • R

The forms I mentioned earlier that the site doesn’t support are some critical forms, such as part-year or multiple state returns, Form 2210 (Underpayment of Estimated Tax), and Form 8885 (Health Coverage Tax Credit). I need the last one personally.

    • Paula

I used credit karma for my taxes and then I used h and r block to compare. H and r block gave me a refund and credit karma had me owning money.

Just FYI: I would love to use them but last time I checked, they don’t handle backdoor Roth conversions. I check last year and I looked again this year and it has not been updated. Hopefully they will add it soon. I would love to file for free but I need Form 8606.

    • Cassandra (Hip Sidekick)

That’s good to know. Thanks for sharing that info, Angie!

I used them this year. I didn’t think it was as user friendly as TurboTax. My return was $13 less than TurboTax said it would be, but I saved the $40 filing fee. So it worked ok for me.

    • Amanda

I agree that it is not as user friendly as turbo tax! I really had to search for forms. I am hoping it is secure! Turbo tax gets hacked each year

  4. Kcrow

I used them this year and got back the same amount that turbo tax deluxe offered me (at an additional $80). I had no issues using it! As long as your taxes aren’t too complex I recommend it.

  5. Michelle

I switched to them this year and was super happy it was free! I havs used Tax Act for years but the price keeps going up!!! Even with a coupon code it was over $60… I got the same amounts for both federal and state and didn’t find credit karma hard to use at all😁

  6. Alex

I was happy to be able to use it this year- I did mine on TurboTax to make sure first (not filing lol) and it was $1 more or less I don’t remember with Karma- saved me $60 so was really happy about that

  7. Taya

I filed with them too…I didn’t have health insurance for 4 months and wasn’t penalized for it since I was under the income limit I guess…🤷

  8. Liz

I used them last year and this year. Our taxes are simple but we did need some forms like 1099 -misc and 1099-INT. I used chat feature and was directed to proper forms. Even after filling I kept getting e-mails to confirm that all my questions were answered to my satisfaction. Highly recommend credit karma.

    • Cassandra (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback, Liz. So glad you had a good experience!

I used credit karma tax for my sister this year because she had an item on a schedule 3 form that turbo tax now charges for because of the new tax laws. The credit was for $114 but the charge from turbo tax would have been $80 (state/fed) to claim it. I got the same exact amounts on both websites but I did find that credit karma was not as user friendly as turbo tax. It didn’t really walk you through things like I was used to for 10 years but it wasn’t horrible either.

You can just go to Irs.gov and do free filing. You select income above or below $66,000. From there they may or may not ask you additional questions to match you w one of their free file software partners. H&R Block for example. Once done you instantly submit it.

    • Mell

Can you do state there to for free? And is there a way to print at irs government for free?thinking I tried last year irs government and they wanted me to pay to print my forms.

      • Lilianna

I printed mine for free. I also did state as well for free via this option.

I used this site one year, when it first came out. Not as user friendly as turbo tax.

This year, and last year, I used myfreetaxes.com on all of my siblings taxes. It eventually goes to h&r block, the premium version. For this website, if you make under 66,000, then you can file both federal and state for free. It’s a lot better than credit karma, and up there with turbo tax.

I made a little more that that so I went with freetaxusa for federal and my own state tax efile and filed my state for free.

  12. NorCalMomof3

Same I used them when they first came out filed my 2016 return (by April 2017). It was free but definitely had to use turbo tax for questions that I had. It worked out fine but prefer turbo tax.

I used credit karma to file my taxes this year and I would recommend that people check that they can file their state taxes through this service before they start. I didn’t realize that my state was not accepting filings through Credit Karma until I completed the federal portion and by that I point I just had to file my federal electronically and then do the whole thing over using the free version of H&R Block and file the paper version of my state taxes. I also agree with some of the other comments that it is not as user friendly as Turbo Tax. I would also add that H&R Block was much more user friendly and I wish I had started through them instead of using Credit Karma. This is coming from someone who used Turbo Tax in the last few years and had to switch to another service because they started charging for folks with student loan payment. Just my 2 cents. Sorry for the length of this.

  14. nancy

I used myfreetaxes.com. it’s totally free if your income is 66000 or less. I filed federal and 2 state, but you can do up to 3 state. And it uses h&r block. Super easy

  15. Rachel

I have used them the past few years and find it very easy to use. It also stores last year’s information so that it makes filing so much easier.

  16. Sandi

Do Not use this to file your taxes. They said mine was submitted and it has been over 2 weeks and has not been accepted by my state. When I finally was able to speak with someone, they basically said there was nothing they could do if in fact it hadn’t actually been sent. There is absolutly no phone numbers to get assistance through Credit Karma!!!!!!

    • Christina

I had this happen last year. They never efiled my state taxes and you can’t go on another site to efile just state. I ended up having to go through the state individually and credit Karmas customer service regarding this issue was abysmal. I almost missed my state deadline because of this issue. Only reason I noticed is because I never got my state refund. Credit karma kept saying state was filed but when I went to my state “wheres my refund” site It stated I never filed

Getting a little worried first year with credit karma tax. Hope I filled everything out right. Filed on 1/30 still waiting to hear if they will approve them… just trying to save myself $80 but now I don’t know if it was worth it??

First tried turbotax but would have cost me 80 bucks! I heard of tax act but i was still going to be charged…not too much about 15.00. Finally submitted with credit karma for free plus free state! So easy and with in an hour it was accepted.

  20. pam maggard

we made over 100k did karma for free was same as HR but no $60 file fee and it was accepted like in 2 minutes
