Are job postings like this cleared by your site to make sure they are legit? Does anyone have any information on working for this company?

    • Melanie Mouw

I’ve been an independent contractor with SHIPT since June, and I love it! I teach, so the flexibility is wonderful for me. I work more in the summer, and only one night a week during the school year. I will say that the $25/hr figure listed is definitely on the high end. That would only be after tips and with larger orders.

      • CARLY LAPP

So, what is the average person hour or is it all based on tips? Thanks!

    • Sam

They are literally contracted by Target for target.com deliveries now. They are legit.

$25 an hr? No. $7 is more realistic…. most of the people I delivered the groceries to did not tip me at all… I don’t know if they just forgot or didn’t want to or what… also not worth the gas … I drove a lot so I couldn’t justify it.

Whenever I am at our local Meijer, I see Shipt shoppers all of the time. I applied a couple of months ago but there are no immediate openings in my area. Hopefully something opens up soon. It sounds like a pretty good gig. 🙂

As a full time college student Shipt is great to do here and there on weekends or in-between classes! $25 is towards the higher end but I’ve defitnally made more than that from one shopping trip and have way made less! Overall enjoy working for them! Stressful at first but anyone can get the hang of it quick!!

Oh cool! Thanks so much for taking a moment to share your experience, Kaitlin! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

    Shipt is owned by Target.

My daughter and I both applied and did the online interview and neither of us got the job I’m not sure what the qualifications are to buy groceries, LOL

Look like there’s no openings in TX.

This may be just what I need! I just told my husband that I needed a new hobby on my days off. I work 3 days a week and end up going shopping on my days off spending money because I am bored. At least with this, I would get the experience of shopping while making money!

I utilize shipt, instacart and Walmart grocery delivery. I have a child with sensory processing disorder and autism and going to a big, loud, bright store is just too much for her. I am so grateful for the shoppers and the service. I’m more than happy to tip $10-$20 per delivery (usually 3 a week) to avoid having to go to the store myself. The cost of the services and delivery fees and tipping does add up quickly, but for my family the money is well spent.

I worked for Shipt last year. I didn’t find it worthwhile IMO. Depending on your market, jobs can be scarce and you have many Shipters fighting for the same job. Also, some insurance companies will not cover these types of jobs if you get in an accident while working. I probably made $12-$15/hr, but it all depends on the size and value of the order. Also, make sure you have a GREAT phone battery! You will need to be in constant contact with the customer, and you will go from full battery to NOTHING in no time flat.

Frecklelilly great point on the insurance. Before taking a delivery job that requires your own personal vehicle you should definitely call your insurance company and ask lots of questions regarding using your vehicle and make sure you get it in writing and keep a copy in the event there is an unfortunate accident. Best to be prepared and have all the facts then to assume that your insurance will cover an accident where your vehicle is your office rather than normal every day transportation.

      • Susan

Just curious, would your insurance company know if you were shopping for someone else?

        • sosmommy

You are only reimbursed .58/mile. Also, in the fine print, you have to “lease your vehicle” to Shipt during your shop. Once you complete your shop, your vehicle is then released. Even though that is the case, their insurance doesn’t cover if you were to get into a fender-bender.

          • Susan

So they are paying the IRS allowable reimbursable mileage rate. Interesting. Thanks for the additional information. They must somewhere make you sign a liability waiver, if they are not liable for any accidents while your car is being leased by them. I’m surprised they haven’t been brought into lawsuits yet where their shoppers have gotten into accidents. Guess the service is too new.

        • sosmommy

You also have to provide Shipt with your insurance policy, policy declarations, proof of insurance, and proof of premium payment for the insurance policy required in the Section upon request. You also have to carry specific levels of liability for not just you but for third parties that satisfy the minimum requirements to operate a private passenger vehicle. LOTS OF FINE PRINT!!!!!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh darn! Sorry to hear you didn’t care for it. Thanks so much for the honest review!

This sounds like a great job to have on the side to bad it isn’t available in my area was excited to apply

I’ve been a shipt shopper for 3 years since they first launched. The money used to be great consistently, but now they have overhired so many other shoppers that it’s hard to make the kind of money we used to. Is it a nice side gig for some extra cash? Yes. But would I quit my day job for it? No. I would say the pay does average out to be about $20/hour, but in my area there’s not enough shops to work consistently at that pay rate. Overall, not a bad way to make some extra cash, but cannot be relied on for a full time income.

I was a Shipt shopper for about five months. It started out really good and I was making probably $20-25 per hour, but then they over hired shoppers so there was a lot of competition for the jobs. How much you make depends on how large your order is and how much you are tipped. I found that only about half of the shops I did would tip. Toward the end of the time I shopped for them, when they didn’t tip I often only made about $8 per hour. The shops I was offered usually paid around $8-12 and tips averaged about $5. I had to stop shopping with them due to a health issue, otherwise I would still be shopping, even with the lower wages.

  13. Renee

What about the gas you use to make the delivery? It sounds like you would make even less if you were paying for your own gas.

    • Emily

After factoring in mileage, I only make 8-10ish dollars per hour (and that’s assuming people tip reasonably). Working with shipt, you’re an independent contractor and all your expenses are on your own dime.

Sounds like you have more history with Shipt than most. My son started with them, I found out our auto insurance specifically denies coverage for contract work, so no help from them at all. Since my son is on our policy, if he gets in an accident, we as policy owners are also liable for everything. There goes our retirement. Have you or anyone been able to get a copy or certificate of insurance from Shipt? I only have emails from them stating what they MIGHT cover and what is not covered. They say they cover the harm my son does to others but nothing for him- so if he is in the hospital, ambulance, cost of towing vehicle, follow up medical- it’s all on him (us). This could be a liability nightmare for anyone.

  14. Haley

Does anyone know if you are allowed to do this with kids with you?

    • sosmommy

I haven’t seen anything in the contract about kids, but I also wasn’t looking for that since it did not apply to me. I will say, we have a lot of Shipt shoppers and I have never seen children with them. You would need to inquire with Shipt on this.

    • Susan

I read somewhere, maybe on their website, that you must shop alone. Can’t even be with another adult.
