When is the best time to visit Alaska?
We have gone in May and August. Both were fine. I remember it being a little warmer in August. It is an incredible cruise! I highly recommend it!
I’ve got two boys ages 11 and 14. Would this be something for kids their age?? (FYI…They’d rather stay home and play video games 🙄😂)
They would love this! We took our kids last summer and there were lots of kids on the ship. Plenty of kids activities too. Loved NCL too. Great family vacation.
Looks amazing, but it’s too expensive to fly to Anchorage to get there. Over $1000/pp where I’m from.
Yes I think the cruises out of Seattle are a better deal for this reason.
Although the train ride from anchorage to Seward (the cruise port) was one of our favorite parts of the trip.

I’ve always wanted to cruise to Alaska….one day before i die, I’ll do it.
The Jewel has had mechanical problems in the past (week of 11/12/18) , as in engine failure. Both of these links are to trips on the Jewel. You’d be better spending your money to sail their newest ship (now one year old)- the Bliss – to Alaska. For some reason, the Jewel, plus the Jade (which had engine failure in San Juan this past Thanksgiving) and a few of their other older ships have had engine failure. Sail new, or pick another line. Even when we were on the Bliss we had engine problems and the ship was 7 months old. We were in St Thomas 4 extra hours. The problem was fixed quickly but most likely because it’s a new ship. Needless to say, NCLs maintenance record isn’t impressive.
We have been on the jewel twice and as recently as last August. It is an older ship but seemed well maintained and we had no issues.
My kids went on an Alaskan cruise when they were 7,9 and 11 and hated it. They went in July and it was cold. They wore jackets the whole time. I’m an avid cruiser (8 a year) and I have no interest in taking an Alaskan cruise. Give me sun and sand.
I wanted to add I was on the horizon and we had engine problems. I was on the fantasy with engine problems.
Things break down new or old.
These ships run every day sometimes in adverse conditions.
So too cold to go in May or June?
I live in AK. July and Aug are our warmest months. Keep in mind the further North you go, the colder it will be. You can expect some rain here and there and mild temps 50 – 75 for the most part.
We went on an Alaskan Cruise with our 3 kids ages 7, 11 and 14 and they had a blast. They loved getting food whenever they wanted to and swimming in the pool even though it was cold a couple of the days and enjoyed the ports. They panned for gold and went on a gondola ride. One night they had a chocolate night and they played bingo. Yes, there were times that it was cold and rainy so there was some down time but it was a nice little break for the kids so that they didn’t over do it. The glaciers were spectacular!!! Highly recommend. They also had a kids club that had many activities for them.
