I’ve been an independent contractor with Shipt since June, and I love it! I teach, so the flexibility is wonderful for me. I work more in the summer, and only one night a week during the school year. I will say that the $25/hr figure listed is definitely on the high end. That would only be after tips and with larger orders.

As a full time college student, Shipt is great to do here and there on weekends or in-between classes! $25 is towards the higher end but I’ve definitely made more than that from one shopping trip and have way made less! Overall enjoy working for them! Stressful at first but anyone can get the hang of it quick!!

I worked for Shipt last year. I didn’t find it worthwhile IMO. Depending on your market, jobs can be scarce and you have many Shipters fighting for the same job. Also, some insurance companies will not cover these types of jobs if you get in an accident while working. I probably made $12-$15/hr, but it all depends on the size and value of the order. Also, make sure you have a GREAT phone battery! You will need to be in constant contact with the customer, and you will go from full battery to NOTHING in no time flat.

I’ve been a Shipt shopper for 3 years since they first launched. The money used to be great consistently, but now they have overhired so many other shoppers that it’s hard to make the kind of money we used to. Is it a nice side gig for some extra cash? Yes. But would I quit my day job for it? No. I would say the pay does average out to be about $20/hour, but in my area there’s not enough shops to work consistently at that pay rate. Overall, not a bad way to make some extra cash, but cannot be relied on for a full time income.

I was a Shipt shopper for about five months. It started out really good and I was making probably $20-25 per hour, but then they over hired shoppers so there was a lot of competition for the jobs. How much you make depends on how large your order is and how much you are tipped. I found that only about half of the shops I did would tip. Toward the end of the time I shopped for them, when they didn’t tip I often only made about $8 per hour. The shops I was offered usually paid around $8-12 and tips averaged about $5. I had to stop shopping with them due to a health issue, otherwise I would still be shopping, even with the lower wages.

As a Shipt shopper. I love the flexibility of it. But there many times I get paid $6 bucks an hour and I drove 10 miles. Other times I make $80. I have one lady her order pays me $30 and she tips me $50. But I get her once a week.

Some days you get one order other days you have 18 orders. On Monday I worked 9-7 14 orders I made $250. I drove over 100 miles. Tuesday I worked 9-7 3 jobs I made $18 in 4 hours (4.5 an hour) and I drove 45 miles.

Orders are primarily 5pm to 10pm and weekends. I will deliver at 2 am.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, with us Tp! Good to know what it has been like for you!

I would love to do this but like most other companies, it’s not available in my area.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Darn! Hoping it is available near you soon!

You rarely earn anywhere near that much 🙁

The figure they advertise at ($22-$25 per hour) is very much inflated. The actual way they calculate pay is $5 plus 7.5% of the total in store. For example if you take an order, and the receipt amount at Target is $50, your pay is $5 + $3.75 (7.5% of $50) or $8.75. I see a lot of orders that are in the neighborhood of $50 (shipping is free for members at $35, so orders less than that are not common). If that $50 order was the only one you had in that hour, you’re making $8.75 less mileage (which is currently at $0.58 per mile, so having to drive far really eats into your profits). Tips in my area are about 50/50, so I don’t count on them. When I do get tipped, it’s usually about 10% of the order ($5 is a common tip for the scenario described above)

Fortunately for me, Shipt is only a side gig. I’ll continue to do it, because I like having a little extra spending money to treat myself once in a while. Having said that, I wouldn’t quit my day job for Shipt!

Will you adjust the post to reflect the more realistic amount of $12-25/hr pay? The comments on here and on the post are stating that “up to $25/hr” is a rare and misleading.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Katie! Thanks for the feedback and request! The pay can definitely vary. We did update the post details to include that “this amount will definitely vary based on order size/value and tips”. Hope that helps!

    • Kathleen

Yes please adjust it to state a more reasonable pay!

      • Liza (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks Kathleen! We’ve updated the title and post to reflect what current Shipt shoppers say is more of an average for them.

        • Katie

          Thank you Liza

I started Shipt hoping I was going to make that kind of money. They are not paying you anywhere near that amount if you make close to that amount it’s because a customer gave you a really nice tip. However, some people don’t tip which means you drove to the store did their shopping, delivered it to them and made about $10 sometimes even $ 8. That amount is before taxes because you save your own taxes so once you take 30% away you made between $5.60 and seven dollars. I work more for the tips than the actual pay. I really like working for Shipt and the flexibility. My area has become flooded with shoppers so it’s not as easy to get orders as it was when I started

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to comment, Judy! Glad you have enjoyed working for Shipt!

I work for Shipt as well. ..thinking of it as “per hour pay” is where it can get a bit inaccurate. The post states “up to…” which I don’t have a problem with.

If you think of it as “per shop ” you’d be in the ballpark. This is not a pay per hour business. Taking into account your commute to a store, shop time, delivery time and commute back home or to another store..then you would still have a vague idea of your profit break down. Yours..not anyone else’s. A small order (less than 20 items) could take as long as a large order, (over 40 items) depending on what is in stock, timely communication from the member, waiting in line, speed (or lack there of) of your cashier and your ability. Then you have your expenses that are a part of the business (gas, car maintenance, cooler bags, etc.). Some metros 40 or more shops a week are average..others people are struggling to get 5 in a week.

I enjoy it, understanding some of those variables. I am not in a busy metro at all. But the variables are indeed an integral part of the business. (And I could continue with the list of variables) No one could ever give you an accurate average of what you may make per hour…on any given day. It’s an on demand service and 1 day you could have tons of shops (varying sizes) and no tips..the next day you could have 1 shop and an average or large tip. It’s a business, not an hourly position so when considering the business, please don’t apply those guaranteed income expectations.

I was a Shipt Shopper very briefly. Too many glitches, issues, rules, etc. High stress, low payout and too competitive.

    • Katie

This is what my guess is I’d run into if I was a shopper for them. My time is so limited and if I’m not going to be making much $ and it turns into a headache.. then no thanks 🙂

It is amazing to me how many people will tip their waitress at a restaurant that just brings them their food, or the pizza delivery person who just delivers the foods, but when we take the time to pick out people’s groceries to make sure they’re getting the best quality items and deliver the groceries to their homes, but then a lot of people don’t want to tip!?! I don’t understand that mentality.
