“As a full time college student, Shipt is great to do here and there on weekends or in-between classes! $25 is towards the higher end, but I’ve definitely made more than that from one shopping trip and have way made less! Overall enjoy working for them! Stressful at first, but anyone can get the hang of it quick!!”
“I’ve been a Shipt shopper since they first launched. The money used to be great consistently, but now they have overhired so many other shoppers that it’s hard to make the kind of money we used to. Is it a nice side gig for some extra cash? Yes. But would I quit my day job for it? No. I would say the pay does average out to be about $20/hour, but in my area there’s not enough shops to work consistently at that pay rate. Overall, not a bad way to make some extra cash, but cannot be relied on for a full time income.”
“I’ve been an independent contractor with Shipt since June, and I love it! I teach, so the flexibility is wonderful for me. I work more in the summer, and only one night a week during the school year. I will say that the $25/hr figure listed is definitely on the high end. That would only be after tips and with larger orders.”
The pay is HEAVILY market dependent. In my area, the pay is generally $7-10 a shop, no matter how far away from the store the delivery is. Which means the pay is below minimum wage for most jobs!!! You have to factor in that you’re an independent contractor and have to set aside an average of 30% of your pay for paying your own Social Security and Medicare taxes at the end of the year, gas and wear and tear on your own vehicle, etc. The ONLY way to get the $25/hr that is FALSELY advertised is to get heavy tippers all the time, which is Super rare in most areas.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, Kathleen! Good to know how it has worked in your area!
I’ve wondered about the pay. I have some friends/acquaintances that tried it and none stayed with it for longer than a couple of months.
Pay is calculated by order (not by hour). It’s $5 + 7.5% of the order total. Example – if someone orders $100 of groceries at target, you’re looking at about $12.50.
I do Shipt and I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I make around $350 week doing this part time, around 15 shops a week.
That’s wonderful, Karen! Thanks for letting us know about your experience!
Same! I typically do 15-17 orders a week, working 2-3 days part time and make right at $300 every week. I’m a single mom, and also work a full time job. Definitely helps me bring about $1200 extra a month.
I have applied to them twice and been rejected both times. I have no idea what they are looking for. I got approved for UberEats delivery overnight and have already made $40.
Darn! Sorry to hear that! Congrats on UberEats!
Unrelated to shipt but I just .made my first online purchase for kroger clicklist. Pickup is for tomorrow, am i supposed to tip? Or is it because they work for kroger they don’t get tips? It is a pretty large order, mostly fruits and veggies though
I was told they can’t accept tips.
Does anyone shop for instacart? I currently do shipt, but was thinking about adding instacart as well. I’d like a referral if possible. 🙂
What has your experience with Shipt been?
I like it with some reservations. After I deduct for taxes/mileages/expenses, I make under minimum wage unless I get tipped. Tips aren’t guaranteed (I did the math over my last 100 shops, and only 65 tipped). With tips, it’s worth it. I make enough money at Shipt to pay for my travel habits, but I would never quit my day job for it.
The work is pretty intense and can get stressful – it’s not just delivering groceries. It’s more a personal shopping service. Shipt puts a lot of stress on star ratings (if you dip below a 4.7 out of 5, you have to retake the learning class) and on time percentage. Shipt can drop you for not meeting their standards (a few people who don’t understand that 4 stars is bad can get you dropped).
The flexibility is the best thing about Shipt. I can put myself on the schedule an hour before I feel like working and it’s no problem. Since I do work another job, it’s great that I can do shipt on evenings and weekends without any issues. In fact, Sundays are the busiest days, so I often only do shipt on Sundays.

How does the whole process work, once you are hired on as a shopper?
I’ve been doing it for 2.5 yrs. I’m not sure if the process has changed. I watched videos, did a couple of quizzes, a video interview, got hired…was sent my shopper card, a t shirt and an insulated bag.
