One year after closing its remaining US locations, Toys R Us is planning to open two new mall stores as part of a modest comeback. The new locations (in Houston, TX and Paramus, NJ) are scheduled to open in November 2019, just before Christmas. Richard Barry, CEO of Tru Kids Brands, says the company is planning to offer a revamped online experience as well.

Toys R Us mall storeThe shopping experience in these new mall locations will look and feel different than the one you may remember from the company’s pre-bankruptcy era.

The new stores will be much smaller than the previous ones (about one-third of the size). Their layout may feel unfamiliar too as there will be fewer packaged toys on display to allow for more open play areas, interactive displays, and spaces for special events and birthday parties.

Could these two new stores be an indication of a larger comeback in the works? “We think that this is going to be scalable, and we think we can grow the business over time,” said Barry.

Outside the U.S., Toys R Us continues to operate about 800 stores with plans to open 70 more stores this year in Asia, India, and Europe.

Will their be a website to purchase online??

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

We’ll be sure to keep an eye out!

So does this mean if we still have gift cards that we can use that again

    • Allison

Their website, says no you cannot redeem gift cards. I’m bummed because I found one after you could redeem them.

    • Sue

No. It’s in the frequently asked question area.

    • Ivan

No, which is the reason I won’t shop there. Going bankrupt and screwing your loyal customers in the process isn’t good business.

    • Ash

I’m sure they aren’t allowing it since it is a different owner then when they went bankrupt. If they allowed everyone to use old gift cards they would lose out on a lot of money and possibly go bankrupt again. If it was the same owners as when it went bankrupt then I could see why they should let you use them. But these people did not get the money from the gift cards people already bought.

Fewer packaged toys on display, more play areas – won’t the kids just play and leave?

Our Barnes & Noble just closed and moved to a smaller place with a different kind of layout. Times are changing!

Maybe they keep a limited amount on the shelves but have more toys stocked in the back and re-stock frequently? That might allow them to have smaller stores (lower rent and utilities) and it may actually be less labor to restock than clean up. With ever-faster shipping times, competitive pricing, consumer reviews and no worries about driving around looking for something that’s out of stock, it’s becoming easier to buy toys online. If TRU can make themselves into a destination (like Build a Bear) and someplace kids want to go it may give them an advantage.

I knew once ours closed it wasn’t coming back 😞. It survived til the end though. I really loved the lego events. Lumiere lego was the best.

My kids Lumieres are on my dresser with their Unikitty collection. They gave me custody of the “special stuff”.
