Contigo Kids Water Bottles

Contigo just announced a recall of Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottle Lids that feature a clear spout as the spout may become detached and cause a choking hazard.

Over 5.7 million water bottle lids are being recalled and the affected bottles have a black spout base and black cover. The bottles were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Target and Costco from April 2018 through June 2019.

The recalled water bottles come in three sizes (13-ounce, 14-ounce and 20-ounce) and multiple colors, materials and graphics. They may have been sold individually as well as in two-packs and three-packs.

No injuries have been reported; however, if you have one of these bottles, stop using it and contact Contigo for a new replacement lid. You can head here to view instructions on how to test your lid to see if it has been recalled.

    Thanks

      You’re welcome!

I bought these last year and my 4 kids used them the entire school year. I did not have this issue and I am glad. It should not have taken them a full year to fix this problem! A full year of potential checking hazard. I threw ours out at the end of summer when we purchased new ones for back to school.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

SO glad they worked well for you through year!

  3. Ashley

We have a ton of these cups! I’ve notice the spout starting to pull away and get moldy so we had to throw a ton out 😕

I have one that seems not to fall under the recall but has had the same issue described… It has a green cover and base… I guess I should contact them.

    • Wendy

My green base ones separate, too. My black ones do not even move in the slightest.

    • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

That’s a bummer, I would definitely contact them, Ianamamma!

    • Stephrdh

Same here….if you call, let me know what they say!

    • E

Right? We have two black ones that are on securely but the pink one is coming off!

Just returned mine at Target. They gave me a hard time since they were about a year old, so I showed them this blog post. They eventually gave me a full refund. I know you could contact contigo for a new lid, but it was just easier to get a refund.

    • Nikki

Why did showing them this post get you a refund? The recall does not say retailers are being reimbursed nor is the company offering any money back to consumers? It would flag it as a fraudulent on your drivers’ license which counts at other stores and not just target.

      • A

If they approved the refund it is not going to flag her driver license as a fraudulent purchase 🤦‍♀️. They could have absolutely refused to do it, but in the end they approved it. They are not and can not approve a refund and flag it as fraud.

    • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

I’m sorry they gave you a hard time, Liz BUT I’m happy this post helped you get a refund! 🙂

    • S

Returned to target??? I bet they did give you a hard time. That’s l, unfortunately not how this recall works but I guess good for you if you got your $ back. Also, I’d suggest showing the contigo recall announcement instead of this blog for anyone else who is wanting to make a stink at target.

    • Sarah C

You are not entitled to a refund from the retailer after one year. You get a replacement lid. Not fair for Target to have to eat the cost of this.

Well I just threw the last of ours away last week because of this. Over the past year we’ve gone through 6 because it’s the kind my kids preferred. When they weren’t being sold at our Walmart anymore we had to switch to Camelbak ones. It’s a shame that they took so long to recall.

    • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

It is a shame, Tiffany! How are they Camelbak ones working for you?

      • Wendy Farber

Camelbak is great! We have a couple. The ones we have are insulated, so the water stays colder longer than contigo.

        • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

          Glad to hear that Wendy!

      • Beth

We have only been using camelback water bottles for about 2 years and have only used them for water. I always wash them in the dishwasher as they said dishwasher safe. The other day I took a good look at the nozzles on them and realized 3 of the 5 we are currently using had black mold. Yuck. I threw them away but now am thinking maybe I should’ve contacted the company.

        • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

I ran into this problem all the time when my daughter was younger. I did find that handwashing them helped but it stinks that the company says they are dishwasher safe but yet that ruins them!

  7. Maria

I quit buying these because they do get moldy between the pieces. We only use for water but we switched to the Camelbak cups that have parts that separate easier

  8. Amy

I just got one a few weeks ago. After the first wash it did this. I contacted contiguous and what a joke… they wanted me to send it back (I sent clear pictures of the piece detached) and then pick an older model that got awful reviews for mold. I took it back to kohl’s and got my money back.

    • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

What a pain, Amy! I’m glad you were able to get your money back from Kohl’s!

  9. Katie

Well the process for refund is dumb. You submit a claim then they will send you packaging to send the lids in for them to verify in 3-5 days then they will send you back new lids if they deem yours covered.

    • Jessica (Hip' Sidekick)

Yeah, that is a pretty tedious process😫

Any reusable water bottle can acquire mold. I use Q-Tips and pipe cleaners to push paper towels down the straws once every couple of weeks to make sure our Thermos brand water bottles don’t get moldy. We also use Hydro Flasks without the straws when we don’t need ones that seal shut. We love our Thermos brands because they don’t sweat, ice doesn’t melt in the hot South Carolina weather and they come with fun designs and last forever! My Hydro Flask does dent some, but I don’t care because they work so well! Hope this helps.

  11. Hayley

Hmm… my daughter’s pink cup does this but apparently it doesn’t fall under the recall. I wonder if I call if they’ll update it.

  12. Iryan

I have numerous contingo toddler cups that have been recalled and purchased with in a year to 1-2 years as well. The lifs are hazardous and choking. I have two toddlers and would like a reimbursement for my defective bottles. It’s scary as a parent to know that your kid can chicks. I myself am sick with tachycardia and blood clots last thing I neeed to worry about is if my child’s going to choke on a recall cup. Please help and I can provide a recipe it for all contingo recalls. A refund would be appreciated.
