Woman cleaning for cancer patientUntil there’s a cure, this non-profit will be Cleaning for a Reason.

Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization that serves the United States and Canada.

Its mission is to give the gift of free house cleaning to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer so that these women can focus on their health and treatment while taking away the worry and work of cleaning their homes. And this organization does all the cleaning free of charge!

Debbie Sardone, President and Founder of Cleaning for a Reason, started her non-profit in 2006.

As the owner of her own maid service at the time, she received a call from a prospective client who told her, “I won’t be able to afford that now; I’m undergoing cancer treatment.” In that moment, Debbie decided that no woman undergoing cancer treatment would ever be turned away by her business.

In fact, Debbie made plans to begin offering households fighting cancer free house cleaning services! Since the program began, Cleaning for a Reason has served over 35,000 cancer patients with the help of over 1,200 volunteer housekeeping services. If you or a cancer patient you know would like to take part in this program, an online application can be found on the non-profit’s website.

I love this! But I don’t understand love that it is only for women battling cancer. I know a single dad who could truly benefit from this…

    • Trineke

Does the single dad have cancer? If not, then he’s just a single dad and the world is full of those. Also, lots of single mothers too.

    • CAJ

Miss Laura Lou, your kindness towards this dad may spur you on to start a similar service in your area…starting small with just him and then word of mouth of who else really needs help and who is willing to help and it’ll grow. That’s how movements begin, on dreams and passion! Maybe this can be your new calling 🙂

    • Bethany

I looked on their website and they are offering cleaning to men, women, and children battling cancer. So you can let your friend know to check out the website (if he has cancer) and fill out the application.

      • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, Bethany! Can you tell me where you found that?

        • Taylor S

The FAQs specifically state women only.

I was diagnosed with NSCLC V 9 years ago. I have undergone many treatments in the past 9 years…radiation, chemo, surgery taking 1/2 of right lung, 3 bi-opsys and now I am on Keytruda as it came back again on my left lung. I will be on Keytruda for the next 3-4 years and have a small Met on my brain that makes me wobbly and can not me treated w/the Keytruda. Do I qualify?

I could really use this. I have help from my live-in adult son and husband, but know they could use this break. Too bad it’s not in my area since I qualify.

    • Rainy

My mother’s name was Lisa & she also had cancer. I went and stayed with her for her last two months on this earth as her live in care taker. I know you and your family could use a service like this! I’m hoping it’s available in your area soon. Stay strong & keep fighting. Sending hugs to you and all who are fighting this battle. 💗

Does anyone know if they will do cleaning services for someone who has cancer but is not treating it?

    • Rain

It’s for people struggling the horribly debilitating side affects of chemo and/or surgery.

  7. Mary

Thanks for the resources. Thank God for the people who starts causes like this one and the people who shares the love.

  8. tipaye

As a Social Worker who works with those in Hospice and who receive Palliative Care, I know the need for this is so great. What a wonderful idea.

  9. Heather

Thank you! I am a single mother with cancer and this would be such a blessing! Applying now.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

I’m really sorry, Heather. Remember, you are not alone.

      • MamaBear

        Stand strong.

  10. Kelly

They are not in all areas. I looked last year when I was diagnosed. I finished 6 mos chemo (Hell)…5 different chemo, 3 surgeries, 5.5 weeks radiation yesterday. All…with kids ages 8 and 4. Suffered for over a year. Also check out the BCCCTA for insurance. Where…

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

I am sorry for what you have gone through, Kelly.

  11. Lizzie

Love it! ❤️ hope they get lots of donations to continue doing this!

  12. Roks

This is so wonderful! Do you know if this is for one time cleaning service?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

If you qualify, you can get it twice.

The cleaners are not available at all in Northern California. Local places were charging me a discounted rate of $25 per hour cash per cleaner as a favor but they only do it one time and then they charge a higher rate per job. One of the companies put all papers that they found together in a box and emptied my briefcase that had tax filing papers. My cancer is stage 4 terminal and I have 9 year old twins. The local agency that takes patients to the doctor with volunteers requires that the patient is 65 years old. The kids public school is 8 miles away. There is no school bus or public bus service in the area and no paratransit due to budget cuts. I am required to take Lyft with the kids in a round trip for $40 per day. The hospital is a $75 trip each way. I am married but if my husband took them to school around his work hours we would have to pay $1500 per month for the after school program. I live in a major metropolitan area.

My 59 year old mother died of colorectal cancer in October and was able to use this wonderful service twice. Originally it was for women with breast cancer but they extended it to any cancer.

  15. MamaBear

    This is AMAZING.

  16. Shannon

This is so awesome! I didn’t know this was a thing. My dad died of cancer and during his end of life days my sweet stepmother took care of him, their daughter and worked full time. She definitely could have used this help! (I was not living near by at the time)

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

I am sorry to hear about your dad, Shannon.

  17. Deborah A Jones

I just started treatment for sclc lung cancer. How do i sign up for this

  18. Jennifer Rinehart

My aunt was just diagnosed with breast cancer and am looking to find out how to get this service for her.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

I’m so sorry to hear this, Jennifer. Thinking of you and your aunt and family. Wishing her a speedy recovery. 💕 Be sure to head through the link above, head to “maid services” near the top of the site and then click on “Locate Providers”. Hope that helps!
