Health centers are coming to Walmart!

Walmart recently opened two Health Centers in Georgia in an effort to gain an even bigger share in the healthcare industry. Although Walmart has attempted smaller care clinics in Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas, the company is expanding its efforts with this new “health center” strategy.

Walmart Health centers are fully staffed with qualified medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, behavioral health providers, and optometrists.

These partnerships allow patients to receive a variety of services like primary care, labs, X-ray, EKG, counseling, dental, optical, hearing, community health (including nutritional services & fitness), and health insurance education & enrollment all under one roof.

According to Sean Slovenski, Walmart’s President of Health and Wellness, the Walmart Health clinic will provide affordable, transparent pricing for key health services regardless of a patient’s insurance status. At Walmart Health, urgent care visits are $40, an annual checkup is $30, and a child can get an annual well visit for $20. A complete list of services and pricing can be seen here.

“The issues of healthcare affordability and accessibility are two of the greatest and most prevalent concerns in our country today. Helping families save money so they can live better is at the heart of Walmart’s business, and we have bold ambitions to partner with great providers and find solutions to deliver quality health services at low, transparent pricing to our customers in a way that is convenient for them, making ‘live better’ the norm.”

Walmart Health plans to use its two first locations as a test market, with the goal of bringing the Walmart Health Center model to other communities in the future. The Dallas, GA Health Center opened in September 2019, and the Calhoun, GA facility just celebrated its grand opening in conjunction with a store remodel on January 29th, 2020.

This would be perfect. WalMarts are closer than dr’s offices where my family lives.

  2. desiree

I truthfully thought this was a joke.

    • heathergregson

      It is a joke 😂!

  3. Jodi P

Hundreds of hospitals and clinics have closed in rural areas in the last few years. This could really be a life saver for people.

  4. Arin

I live in Dallas, GA. The new health center is very nice and has been well received. Walmart spent months constructing the center and there’s even a veterinarian’s office!

    • Lisa

      Wow thats nice!

    • Wilton

Arin, I am in Adairsville so this isn’t very far from me, but the clinic they are building in Calhoun is just up the road. A woman I went to school with is working at the one in Dallas and seems to be happy there. I am glad this is an option for the more rural areas.

This seems random for a grocery store. Maybe they got the idea from Kroger and their Little Clinic. I’d also have to disagree with the rural area comment. I live in a rural area and have doctors closer to me than Walmart. This seems to be better for those with no health insurance. With Walmart poor customer service reputation, I’m not sure I would trust them with my healthcare.

    • Beth

Honestly, that’s kind of what I was thinking. The Walmart by me is also kind of dirty, disheveled, and seems to be understaffed. I would hope those things wouldn’t carry over to their medical clinic. In theory, it sounds great though-actual, affordable health care. I hope it works out.

I’m sure Walmart Clinics will be inspected and required to meet State guidelines in order to be licensed and operating.

    • Jodi P

I’m glad that you have doctors close to you, in your rural area. That is not the case for many, many people, and the hospitals and clinics continue to close at an alarming rate. This is a link to a google search of “rural clinics and hospitals closing”. There are so many articles and reports of it, that I couldn’t pick just one to link, here.

i absolutely love this idea…so many don’t have access to affordable health care and especially love the dental cleanings for 25$

    • T

I can’t even figure out how they can offer teeth cleaning for $25. With most cleanings (and xrays if needed) plus the exam by the dentist taking up to an hour, I don’t see how they can make money on this. Add in the fixed costs of the facility, utilities, etc… Just has me scratching my head.

And primary care for my child at $20. Again, scratching my head…. Just seems like a situation of you get what you pay for. I love to save money, but WM isn’t offering these services for free so costs are being cut somewhere….and not just at the insurance company level.

      • C

@T I agree… aside from maybe some sort of government grant or something, I don’t see this working (also I assume either non-doctors will do the visits eg PAs or nurses to keep expenses lower…. or doctors are volunteering their hours… or maybe they are also signing you up for some sort of insurance and that’s the copay? Or those are starting prices on a sliding scale- eg you provide them with income documents and if you make x you pay $20, y you pay $100?) Having lived overseas, in a country that became a “dental work vacation destination “ I can definitely tell you that you get what you pay for- ppl were paying like $50-$100 to get their teeth cleaned and filled (European public health mandatory fees don’t cover dental- aside from emergency dental like you smash your face in)…. their fillings lasted for a year tops… and here I am more than 15 years out from childhood cavities being filled in the USA… SOOOOO basically it would be cheaper to get a quality job that costs more the first time as it lasts longer (also each time you have to refill a cavity, they drill more of your tooth out, so you’ll probably lose the tooth by year 15 🤷🏼‍♀️)… also if you live in a city with a dental school, the student clinic (at least where I am) is always doing free cleanings so they get experience … also they’ll do studies where you get free work (or even get paid)- when they research new techniques or filling materials (or want to see which filling material is the “gold standard”) … here they also do low cost cleanings once or twice a year for kids (again using dental students)

I agree. I am a dental Hygienist. What kind of a “teeth Cleaning” can be performed for $25 and how long is one “in the chair”.

  7. Alli

I think its a great idea. Affordable healthcare, even with insurance, is non-existent in our area. So many people do without because of cost. It’s so sad.

  8. heathergregson

Perhaps Walmart could start offering health care and living wages to their employees!!!!

  9. Jen

Is this a Walmart sponsored post/ad? Seems odd for Hip2save. I get wanting to save money but this is a “new” way to go about it!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Jen! This is not a sponsored post, we just thought readers may find it interesting as it may be an opportunity to save on health care costs.

  10. Jessie

Don’t forget Wal-Mart already has a pharmacy in most all stores
Competing with the other big chains
And also Ann optical shop with optometrist on site in some stores

This is also in sams clubs

  11. Em

Thanks for sharing H2S! I am a nurse in a rural area and know first hand the challenges faced with healthcare today. I think this is great and I appreciate you all sharing!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re SO very welcome, Em!

  12. Jen

I think this is wonderful, Walmart is a big enough chain they can negotiate prices and drive inflated prices down while still giving quality service and products. They may have to pick up some of the costs of certain things, if anyone has the ability to do thing on a large scale it is them. It would be so convenient to get a cleaning, flu shot, eye exam all at the same place. A lot of people forget, or its too far, too much so this is really good.
