Relay Device

Not familiar with Relay?

Different from a smartphone or kid tracker, Relay is screenless so there is no texting, cameras, or internet access which means you won’t have any more screen time concerns! Plus, Relay is built for rough play so kids can throw it, step on it and even get it wet!

To use the Relay device, kids simply press one button to talk, kind of like a walkie-talkie, and then parents/caretakers/older siblings can reply using the free Relay app on their smartphone. Kids can reach any combination of pre-approved contacts including one-on-one chats as well as an everyone chat that can be set up when the account is created.

And if you call your child while they are busy, you can leave them a message that they can check at any time just like voicemail! Plus, if you have two Relay devices they can be linked so that your kiddos can chat with each other! This would be great for kids to meet up after school, during sporting events and more!

Relay Tracker on Backpack

Relay also offers fun features your kiddos will love, like the ability to upload music to use the device as a speaker, or the Echo feature that plays your voice back in funny voices. Kids can also ask for a joke AND it can translate in 15 languages for you!

Note that Relay is only available in the U.S. at this time (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) and does require a $9.99 per month service charge (independent from your normal cell phone service bill); however, there is no contract required so you can cancel at any time!

Take advantage of this Target offer and score your free month of service- or shop at Amazon!

Who do u activate Holiday2019 code with?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Kay! You can activate in the Relay app!

  2. Elissa

Has anyone any experience with this device? Never heard of it but sounds interesting.

    • Christy

The Holderness Family did a video about it recently.

    • Sarah

We had one for about two months. We literally threw it in the trash. The relays to our smartphone would arrive much later than when they were sent. If you were receiving a relay you could not respond to an earlier relay, kind of like a walkie talkie, only one person can talk at a time. You have to speak at just right the distance or else the message is garbled, kind of like a microphone. It was 10 bucks a month and if he was not near our wifi, like literally on the front porch it would not work. We went back to a prepaid phone. I hope this helps.

      • Relay

Hi Sarah, thank you for providing your feedback. We are so sorry to hear that Relay did not meet your expectations.

I know you mentioned throwing your Relay in the trash, but if by chance you still have it, we should be able to help resolve the issue you described with the message from your Relay arriving delayed to your smartphone. This combined with your comment about it only working on your front porch near your WiFi sounds like it is an issue with poor coverage in your area. We work with three of the four major nationwide carriers and can send you a different carrier’s SIM card to adjust your coverage for the network that will work best in your area.

In 2020, we will be releasing the ability to speak synchronously (right now it is asynchronous, similar to a walkie talkie as you described), but we will be opening that ability to up for two people to speak at the same time.

To confirm your point about the microphone, you do need to hold it about 6 inches away from your mouth for the best sound quality.

We understand that this experience was frustrating for you and hope that things are working well for your family with the prepaid phone; however, if you are ever interested in giving Relay a second try, we will be happy to work with you to resolve the issues you described. Please just reach out to us via the “?” symbol in the upper right-hand corner of your Relay app or via our website: https://relaygo.com/families

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. They are helpful to hear and I will certainly pass them along to our team so that we can improve and prevent this experience from happening to others.

        Warm regards,
        MK

I’m so confused. Does it need phone service?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi S! Here is what I found in the details – ” No separate cellular contract is needed.”. Hope that helps!

    • Mitchyblueyez

no contract, but does cost 9.99 a month for service though republic wireless.

  4. kristie

Any clue who service is through? I live in a rural area and ATT is only one that works.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Kristie! I found this listed – “Compatible Service Providers: Republic Wireless”.

    • Relay

We use AT&T for cellular service. You will be billed by Relay though, but the service is AT&T coverage.

  5. Casey

Any deals on the verizon gizmo watch?

  6. Ann

Click on the Target link above in the post then click on product details. There are mixed reviews on this product.

    • Materof7

Same with Amazon reviews…I was trying to figure out if the negative reviews reflect when it first came out? Has technology improved since then? Can anyone weigh in?

      • Relay

Yep, we’ve addressed many of those complaints with updates over the past year. Let us know any questions you have and we’ll be happy to help!

        • Jerrod

Holiday 2019 is not working through the app and help please?

          • Relay

Hi Jerrod, the HOLIDAY2019 code will be available for use from 12/1-12/18. Try again Sunday and it should work!

      • Sarah

I responded earlier in the thread, I gave a review. If you are short on time my suggestion is do not buy it.

  7. Molly Rylee

We are going on a cruise in Feb. Was wondering if they would work ? Anyone know. Just to message on ship?

    • Relay

They work Nationwide in the US and anywhere you have WiFi, so as long as the ship has WiFi, they should work!

  8. animity

I went ahead and ordered a couple. We need something and I have been looking for awhile. All the products have mixed reviews…we shall see. I hope I don’t regret this.

    • animity

By the way, THANK YOU hip2save team! You’ve saved me so much money in the last 11 years. Love you gals and Stetson!

  9. Carrie

Is there by chance a military discount on the service?

    • Relay

Hi Carrie, we do not have a military discount for service but if you activate by 12/18, you will get your service for free in January ($9.99 value). Additionally, if you enroll in our annual plan, you will save each month for a total annual savings of an additional $19.98!

  10. Kari

So glad I decided to open the box today to charge & activate. I only had 4 days to return due to Target’s crappy electronic return policy. Activate & unactivate…. back into the box to return. The buttons are ridiculously tiny. Tested out the device and missed calls from the device to the phone. Not happy. Onto the gizmo watch.

    • S

Gizmo watch is awesome! We’ve have 2 for around 1.5 years & love them

    • Relay

Hi Kari, sorry to hear that your unboxing experience did not meet your expectations. We would be happy to assist you guys while getting up to speed on how to use Relay (to prevent missed messages) if you ever consider Relay again for your needs. Thanks for your consideration and best of luck with your next purchase.

I bought this for my daughter about 6 months ago. We haven’t really had any issue. She’s in 1st grade so I got it for her to message me when she gets out of school. Then I message her back where I am parked. And then she plays a game with me like “guess how far I am” “I see so and so do you” “can you see me yet” etc until she gets to my car. It just makes me feel safer knowing she has it. Plus I can’t always find parking in the same spot. I also use it when she is at her dads house. This lets her talk to me whenever she wants instead of having to ask him. She will message me simply to say “hi” or tell me what’s she’s doing. It’s $9.99 a month and it works anywhere just like a phone. BUT it’s like a walker talkie in a sense that she has to send a message I listen to it and then I send a message back. But it really isn’t difficult. And if I miss her message or vice verse it saves just like a voicemail.

    • Relay

Thanks so much for sharing! So glad you guys are enjoying Relay 🙂

We’ve had it for a week or two now and it serves its purpose. I refuse to give my child a smartphone for many reasons I do not wish to discuss openly, but that’s my parenting style. Any-who, the only issue we have is that the it doesn’t hold a good charge. Not sure if we received a defective one or what but it’s constantly on low battery by the time she arrives home from school everyday so we have to charge it night or else it’s useless! Wish it had a text screen to text only ones that are listed but I’m okay with the way it is. And it would’ve been nice if the lanyard and bumper guard came with the device instead of having to purchase that separately which is a shame since it was another 15 bucks or so! We did however pay $24.99 during a promo pricing and I wouldn’t pay any more than that as I believe the device should be offered for FREE with the annual subscription. The service provided is through At&T as well as T-Mobile. So I don’t know what that lady above is referring to with the service not working within a few feet away. It’s mind boggling for it works on actual cell towers provided by these networks. 🤨

    • Relay

Hi Autumn, thanks for providing your thoughts on your experience. We should be able to help with this battery issue you’ve been experiencing. Please shoot us a note via the “?” symbol in the upper right-hand corner of your Relay app and we’ll help you get to the bottom of this!

  13. Kay

We got the Relay when on Black F sale at Target $25. Activated it this month. The promo code for Republic Wireless ($10 off) doesn’t work until January. My first grader communicates with us after school when I’m on my way to pick her up. Some days r good, some r bad. Sometimes it’s live, sometimes it goes straight to voicemail. Hit or miss. Hoping that with practice, it’ll get better for everyone. Did have to purchase the lanyard on Amazon for $15. Most likely we will keep it n hope the technology continues to improve.

    • Relay

Hi Kay, we should be able to help you with your experience of it intermittently delivering the message vs going to voicemail. Please just shoot us a note via the “?” symbol in the upper right-hand corner of your app. We’re happy to help and want to ensure you have the best experience with Relay.

  14. Laura

We purchased one 5 months ago and used it for several weeks – I really really wanted to love it but it didn’t work well for us from smartphone to device like Sarah mentioned above ” The relays to our smartphone would arrive much later than when they were sent. If you were receiving a relay you could not respond to an earlier relay, kind of like a walkie talkie, only one person can talk at a time. You have to speak at just right the distance or else the message is garbled, kind of like a microphone.”

. Perhaps relay to relay would work better – just my 2 cents.

    • Relay

Hi Laura, do you still have your Relay? If so, we should be able to help resolve the issue you described with the message from your Relay arriving delayed to your smartphone. In 2020, we will be releasing the ability to speak synchronously (right now it is asynchronous, similar to a walkie talkie as you described), but we will be opening that ability to up for two people to speak at the same time. And yes, with the microphone, you do need to hold it about 6 inches away from your mouth for the best sound quality.

      • Laura

I do still have my relay and my account active without usage :-/

        • Relay

Laura, at your convenience, could you please shoot us a note at support@relaygo.com using the email address associated with your Relay account? Simply reference that you spoke with MK on Hip2Save.com and we can dive in from there!
