Heads up, Disney fans!

Disney has just announced that starting Saturday, March 14th and running through the end of March, it will voluntarily close its Disneyland theme park and neighboring Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, California. The Disney Downtown shopping area will stay open and Disney’s three local hotels will remain open until March 16th to allow guests to make travel plans.

Disneyland joins Disney Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo which have already been temporarily closed.

California Governor Gavin Newsome asked that all gatherings consisting of more than 250 people be canceled through the end of March. He did say it excluded Disney parks or to casinos, card rooms or theaters “because of the complexity of their unique circumstances.”

In addition, due to an abundance of caution, Disney World Resort in Florida is also closing its doors from March 15 – March 31st. The hotels at Disney World, Disney Springs, and other retail and dining complexes will remain open until further notice.

Plus, Disney Cruise Line will also stop all new departures beginning March 14th and running through the end of the month.

There have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, but in the best interest of guests and employees, Disney decided to proceed with closing select parks. Disney has stated that they will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies.”

As one positive, Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time at all parks. Thank you, Disney!

We’ve saved for two years to take our four kids to Disneyland this year. We are going at the end of May I hope this is all calmed down by then. We may have some unhappy kids on our hands.

    • Susan

Be careful where you stay…homeless given hotel vouchers to stay at some of the local hotels so some “good deals” come with culture shock.

      • Ann

Have some compassion, Susan! They are human beings and deserve shelter just as much as anyone else!! What a sad person you must be.

        • Jamie

Compassion? Who wants to spend their vacation in that situation? Most people that are paying good money and bringing their family, don’t want to be exposed to that. But way to ridicule someone for wanting to protect their family.

          • A

Lol, her homeless people must be different than ours, more like oh, vacationers? Ours are fighting, stealing and doing drugs. Are you’d saying you don’t want that next to you in your hotel? Gosh, you’re mean😂

      • siena95

Yes, I’ve heard about this, insane.

      • KC

Thank you Susan. I’m traveling with a bunch of students with me, & I need to pick appropriate accommodations. I had no idea.

    • Sarah Hartman

Us too!! I’ve saved for three years and we plan to go at the end of June. I’m hoping it calms down by then as well. We haven’t told our kids as it will be a surprise. I’ll be so bummed if we have to move it.

  2. Helen

Why is the one in Florida not closing?

    • M

I think because CA is a hot spot for the virus at the moment.

      • Rebecca

        As is central FL.

    • Ana

It probably will before all is said and done.

    • tiphanie

Because Florida ‘s governor hasnt issued restrictions?

    • queen62

      Florida is closing

  3. Jen

Sadly, Disney World is closing also. As well as Disneyland Paris and Disney Cruise Line will have no sailings through the end of the month. They will keep hotels and restaurants *open* as well as Disney Springs. They are paying their employees during the closure.

    • Jen

From CNN.com “Disney World, Disneyland Paris Resort to close over coronavirus concerns
      From CNN’s Frank Pallotta
Due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort will close at the end of the business day Sunday through the end of the month, the company said in a statement tonight.

Disney Cruise Line will also suspend all new departures beginning Saturday through the end of the month, the company added.

Disney cast members will be paid during the closure period, and hotels and dining complexes at both Disney World and Disneyland Paris will stay open until further notice, according to the company statement.”

      • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

        We added this! Thanks, Jen!

  4. Christina

Just announced Disney World is closing This weekend through the end of the month.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks! We just added that!

  5. Amber

I’m reading all these articles and I see the disney park sites say theyre closing, but disney cruise has not updated their site to say they’re cancelling all cruises for the rest of the month. They updated earlier this evening, but nothing stating closer.

  6. Linda

Universal studios just followed suit and announced that they are closing also. So glad Disney is going to pay its cast members during the closures. I heard Mark Cuban is paying his arena employees during the NBA shutdown. This is going to be devastating for so many! My heart breaks for people affected by the virus and others affected by the fallout.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Oh no!

  7. Gramma C

I hope it’s over quickly so nobody dies, not so I can go to Disneyland.

    • Stella

Seriously people; a pandemic is not something to joke about. Peoples lives and livelihoods are at stake. A deferred or canceled trip to an amusement park is simply an inconvenience. First world problems much?

      • tleeg74

You must be that lady who cut in front of me at Costco buying 10 pallets of T.P. and 25 cases of water.

        • a.

          HAHA!!

        • holly

          Lol!

      • Tammy

Well, we get it… And a lot of us are tired of the non stop depressing news. A little joking may be needed to deal with the STRESS and financial hardship occuring because of this serious pandemic. So go chill out, please.

      • C

Actually Stella for those with no underlying health issues/Those under 60, this virus is NOT a big deal- most of the cases go unreported bc healthy adults and children (under 60) are a symptomatic (carriers) or have what they believe is a slight cold…. those that need to take precautions are the same ppl who should already be taking precautions given that it’s still cold/flu season …. this is just a distraction from bigger news on what’s going on in the world

        • Stella

Actually, if you are paying attention to real news you would see that any pandemic represents a humanitarian crisis that reaches far beyond our own insular existence. Working families who live paycheck to paycheck, working poor without benefits of sick pay, vacation time or outside support. We are all in this together and have a moral obligation to not only take precautions for ourselves and our families, but our communities and the greater public too.

  8. tleeg74

Now they are closing Walt Disney World and they better get their act together and not close it in July, cause i already got my trip there planned.

    • tziquetzi

      Wow!

    • SavingsMama

Hoping you can take the trip. That’s a good bit away…!

  9. Ann

Stuff like this to eliminate crowds makes me wonder what would have happened if this outbreak occurred during black Friday 🤔

    • snezhinka

Most people shop online now anyway.

  10. siena95

I really don’t see what closing for 2 wks will do, businesses have to be pc and look like they are making some effort.

    • C

Exactly… bc closing for only 2 weeks doesn’t mean the virus isn’t still spreading elsewhere (and after the 2 weeks means it’s still going around and ppl will spread it in the park if infected)… I think they should just let ppl attend at their own risk… 🙄🙄🙄 and for the workers give them the same options as they did with the messed up Boeing planes (they can choose to work or not- same with guests that choose not to go- refunds or changes without fees)…. the media is really over hyping this… unless there’s another mutation those at serious risk are those with underlying health issues and/or 60 or over… and aside from makeawish these categories of people generally don’t attend Disney (occasionally grandparents- but I don’t recall seeing that many ppl there in the 60+ group)…. ppl are just going nuts

      • Whitney

But all of the closures and cancelled events will slow the spread. The healthcare system can only handle so many critical patients at a time. Although you may not see lots of grandparents at the parks themselves, you can bet that a lot of the kids/parents that enjoy the park have elderly parents/grandparents that do fall within the high risk group.
We can’t leave it to people to attend at their own risk, because many don’t think about others when making choices. “Oh, I just have a cough, but I also have tickets to something I’m excited to attend. I’ll just go to it and it’ll be fine.” Cruises, flights, NBA games, it only takes one infected person to affect hundreds to thousands of others.

        • KC

Thank you Whitney! We are a family of doctors, & most people don’t understand the concept of slowing the spread of the virus, & not over taxing our healthcare system.

          • Mary

Agree with Whitney and KC. I actually think it should be a full month and not just a couple of weeks. We know it won’t stop it but it will slow it down and allow some of the people already sick to get better without spreading it to others. It Is an inconvenience but I do believe this is the best thing for all of us at the moment. I hope and pray that anyone that gets this virus can recuperate quickly.

    • IB

Agree 100%. Flu killed 20,000 in US last year and nobody cared.

  11. Rose

I am relieved to see that theme parks are starting to close. I live in FL and a large percentage of our citizens are over the age of 50. Our healthcare system could be overwhelmed very easily when this starts to spread. Closing large places like Disney, Universal, etc can help slow this down and give our healthcare a chance to cope. To the person who commented that people over 60 don’t go to Disney, you’re missing the point of the closures. Stay safe everyone.

  12. IB

The level of panic in the country about this is insane. The media is hyping this 1000x more then necessary. Come on people…be rational.

    • snezhinka

until someone is infected in your own community. Your opinion will change within minutes.

      • IB

I don’t panic when someone gets flu in my community. And that is far worse. Death rate for coronovirus is 1%. Don’t buy into the media hype.

        • rintho

The death rate for flu is 0.1% . Just so you know

        • ella

Death rate for coronavirus is pegged at around 3% – that is 30 times higher than the flu (which is 0.1%). Deaths have skyrocketed in Italy. It is thought that China was not giving real numbers and I think we are seeing that now in other areas. Senior citizens will have a much higher percentage. This is not hype.

        • snezhinka

The situation is changing hourly. Stay tuned. This is not the hype and all those who do not treat it seriously might be those infecting others. Be alert and stay inside.

    • Katie

Yeah guys, an new/unknown and highly contagious virus in killing people at high rates and with no cure or vaccines in sight, we really shouldn’t believe that this is anything to worry about at all. After all, world shuts down ALL the time and with no reason!
