The only fry pan you will ever need! Mine over 20 years old!
A good source of iron if you are mostly vegetarian like me!

Why does every single one rust for me immediately – any tips ?

    • bdubs

Wipe it down with oil when you’re done with it and from time to time if you’re not using it regularly.. Don’t use dish soap on it. I grew up using brillo pads on my mom’s cast iron (don’t ask why) to clean them. A few years ago we bought our won 12″ Lodge pan and researched care & cleaning. I have the little plastic scraper things from Lodge. When we’re done using it we put hot water in (or heat the pan w/water in it), use the scraper and then wipe it out before oiling it. Easiest cleaning I’ve ever done. It does take a little time to acheive non-stick quality for things like eggs, but you’ll get there.

Have you checked out the “cleaning and care” at Lodgemfg.com? Hugely important to keep them seasoned: wash, dry (immediately) and oil.

After I hand wash mines I dry my skillet REALLY good then I lightly oil the entire thing, including the handle and the bottom of the pan, then I throw it in a really hot oven for a few minutes. Allow it to cool completely, wipe it down to make sure there’s no excess oil or moisture in or on it, store it in a dry place making sure no other pots are on top of it and you shouldn’t have rusting. That’s what works for me. Hope it helps!!!

Also, another tip, if it DOES rust, or gets really unsightly, OR if you are like me and found an ancient one that looked like it may have been used at the first Thanksgiving…. you can still bring them back to life and it’s super easy! Trust me! Just wash all the surface dirt, rust, wear off the pan, then pour a bunch of table salt all over it. Cut a potato in half and using the cut surface get to scrubbing that salt into the pan, you don’t need to add any water the salt will make the potato release enough. Scrub the whole thing, inside outside top bottom handle ALL of it. Then rinse it off and it should look clean, oil it up really well all over, every exposed bit of the iron and put it into a hot oven for a few minutes. Once it starts smoking turn it off, let it cool and you should be good as new.

Btw I just ordered the 8″ so we will soon have all 3 of the skillets on this post.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! I like using the 8″ to make dutch babies (full-size light pancakes with fruit)!

I have one and love it. But I am worried about the blackness on my paper towel after I wiped it down. Is it harmful that I am ingesting it?
