Listen up iPhone users!

Apple recently agreed to settle 2017’s “Batterygate” lawsuit with a $500 million payout – and you may qualify for a cut of it!

Not sure what “Batterygate” is? In late 2016, some iPhone users noticed decreased performance and unexpected shutdowns after installing an iOS update when their phone reached a battery capacity of 30% or less. In 2017, Apple admitted to changing system performance to preserve battery life.

Customers were not happy and thought Apple was pushing them to spend money to upgrade their iPhones – hence this lawsuit.

Anyone who currently owns or owned the following iPhones prior to December 21st, 2017 can submit a claim:

  • iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus and/or SE devices that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus devices that ran iOS 11.2 or later

To submit your claim, head here and enter your iPhone’s serial number or look up the number with their search tool. You can also mail in a claim form by downloading it online, emailing the Claims Administrator at Questions@SmartphonePerformanceSettlement.com, or by calling 1-833-649-0927.

Claims must be submitted online or received through mail by October 6th, 2020. Head here for more information on this settlement and qualification criteria.

How much and when will I get it?

A final court hearing to approve the settlement is scheduled for December 4th, 2020. If there are no appeals, settlements will be quickly processed. The estimated payout is $25 per affected device.

    Thanks just filed it!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re so welcome!

  2. mlj211

I got an email about this. Both my husband and I qualify. I’ve never participated in a class action lawsuit but our batteries were super crappy….. so maybe I’ll take the $25….. not that it’s much but it’s something.

  3. Nicole

I received an email and filed as well, I loved my 6se and had to go to an 8 when my phone failed twice 🙁

  4. Tracy

I had to trade in my 6S to get a new iphone when mine was having problems. Is there any way to participate without the phone or how would you provide proof without serial number?

    • Anna

Wondering the same as k had to trade my 6s plus for a newer one

    • kbmum

If you go to the website and click to submit the claim, you can enter the email address you use as your Apple ID and some other info. The site will look up your info and provide the serial number. The site does not ask for your Apple password.

      • MrsGarfield

that works only if you currently own the phone.
Our family had own a few and I cannot locate old serial numbers, sadly.

    • Amber

You use the search tool and search your Apple ID.

  5. ksteele293327

This happened to me, but it was on the extreme side. After switching to an iPhone X, my 6 went dead dead. Like will not even charge up. They said I’d have to replace the battery to turn it on. CRAZY! I can’t even get the serial off of it because it won’t turn on.

    • ksteele293327

Thankfully I was able to search by Apple ID. Thanks!!

  6. s

My iPhone 6 battery was terrible so my husband installed a new one. I just thought it wore out…in a few months after owning it. 😂

  7. dealzgurl

I ended up with 3 iphone 6 phones. It was the worst phone ever! The X isn’t that spanking great either. Anyway, I completed the form. Thanks H2S!

  8. Shoppingfan

My info can’t be found & I have all my boxes, receipts & login info but it’s says I don’t exist. This is odd. I’m holding my 6, 7 & 10 in my hand. 🤔

    • Haseena

Same, I am holding my 7 and looking at the serial number, but when I enter it in the claims page it says it can’t be found in their database.

      • KimPossible

Same for the iPhone 7. Just filed a paper and included a picture of the box that shows serial # and that it says iPhone 7

    • LaurenD

I have a 7+ and it said the same thing for me. I copied and pasted it directly from my phone. Weird.

    • CW

Same here. Took the serial number off Settings-General-About.

    • rochellemcgee

Same here. Is there an alternate way of filing? I checked both my serial and my Apple ID. I’m typing on my 7Plus right now 🤔

      • rochellemcgee

Doh! Nevermind, I reread the post!

    • deanna

the same thing is happening to me. Said my serial number is wrong and I literally have the original box in my hand……

  9. Andrew

My iPhone 6s is still kicking… Battery lasts maybe 1 hour of video 😅
    Thanks for sharing!

    • KetaKoya87

😁😁 same! I LOVE my rose gold iPhone 6s that I’m still using 💜💜 but my battery life sucks!! Thanks H2S team for posting

  10. hary

How much claim amount they are giving g to customers ! I changed my phone 6s plus battery in Best Buy last year !

    • Stacy F (Hip2Save Sidekick)

It will likely be around $25.

  11. B.haskins

How about reimbursing those of us that bought a new battery to the tune of $150?

  12. Toni Potts

My family and I upgrade every year. I have no clue what serial numbers I had. But I’ve every model. So has my 3 kids.

    • Roci

You don’t need it , just type your Apple ID .

      • Paula

It will say can’t find you.

  13. molly

I have a 6S, and my battery life took a nose dive after that upgrade. I replaced it for free at Apple, but it didn’t help very much. I have to take a portable charger anytime I go out. A $25 payout is appreciated, but the damage done to my phone is worth more than that.

  14. Cherie

Anyone having any luck qualifying more than once with your Apple ID? I’ve had a couple of the phones listed and unfortunately it’s only pulling one up for me

    • mama28spencer

i was able to type in my apple ID and change the phone type and it pulled up all of our past phones that were on my account that qualified. very simple.

  15. Staci

Thank you for the information!! Our family switched to Android after the battery debacle.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome, Staci!

  16. Angela

So, can someone clarify for me. During that time did Apple secretly try and have these batteries die faster so people with these phones feel their phone was getting old, and therefore want to get a newer phone? Was this a sneaky way of them getting people to want to get new phones? If so, that is so dishonest! It makes me want to never buy a phone from them again!

    • zigzag5000

Not at all. The claim is that the operating system modified the performance on certain iPhones if the battery already happened to be at the end of its life, so as to prevent random shut downs.

  17. Tawana

Thank you. I was able to do the search tool and found my serial number.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Oh good! You’re very welcome!

  18. luna

Collin where did u buy that top from?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hi Luna! I received it in a super old Stitch Fix box.

  19. rochellemcgee

I’ve always had terrible battery performance with just about every iPhone I’ve ever owned, especially after a few software updates (hubby refuses to leave Apple 😒). Surprised it took 6 and 7 models for a lawsuit.

  20. EbonyA

Thank you! I was able to submit my claim

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Glad to hear it! You’re SO welcome!

  21. Jackie

Going to file it! Thank you! Both my husband and I we had/still have iPhone 6s. The Battery was terrible. They did offer a battery replacement but we never did it. The apple store is like 2 hrs away and the day we stop by they had a 6 hr wait time so we didn’t do it. I gave my phone to my son and got an iPhone 11 last year. ..HUGE difference when it comes to battery life with the 11.

  22. btwren

How am I supposed to know my phones serial numbers before 2017 😂 I’ve had multiple because Apple is such trash

  23. Imsofrugal

I traded my 6 plus through Apple and it says that info couldn’t be found. Oh well.

  24. sarah-15

Thank you! I was able to search with my apple ID to find mine and submit. I actually had 2 apple ID’s. One for my son and one for me. Be sure to search all if you have multiple!

    • Anne

Did you submit both under your name/info? My son has an iphone also and he is a minor so I wasn’t sure if I need to do his under my name or his…

  25. IB

Only people that win in class action suits are the lawyers.

  26. DeborahMc

Thank you for sharing the information. I submitted with no problem.

  27. Sherry

It says I have to give my bank routing number and account number. Is this safe? I’m not very comfortable with this. Looks like they could just send Visa cards.

  28. Sai

Thanks. I have 6 and 7 phone and both are found in database so i submitted the form.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome, Sai!

  29. Holly Platt

Thanks! We have a few for work that I filed and I possibly did. I’m going to check my devices when I get home.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome!

  30. Mommy2Bear

Wow.. it’s the same battery issue going on right now if you upgraded to the new iOS 13.5.1

  31. zigzag5000

There seems to be a lot of confusion around what this settlement is regarding. It has absolutely nothing to do with your iPhones battery. The claim is that Apple’s iOS throttled “performance” of iPhones if the device’s battery was at the end of its life … so as to prevent the phone from randomly shutting down. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan. Personally, I appreciate a smart operating system that adapts the user experience based on hardware integrity. I’d rather have a slow iPhone than one that randomly shuts down. IMO
