Anyone else’s school like tk ask for name brand things, Elmer’s glue only, Ticonderoga pencils only, Crayola crayons only or just mine?! (Insert eyeroll here) I do appreciate this list though!

Ours does for a few items. I will oblige if the requested items are reasonably priced – most do go on sale at some point – but will buy off brand if it’s more convenient (finding Ticonderoga pencils one year was stupidly difficult) and has decent reviews. I do understand that there’s a difference between RoseArt and Crayola, for instance. All of our supplies are considered “donations,” and I always get back a lot of offbrand items at the end of the year, so I don’t get too worked up over it.

As an educator, it is important that I tell you why we want certain brands. It is to SAVE parents money $$$. Crayola crayons are more durable and won’t leave a waxy feel on the paper. They also last longer. Ticonderoga pencils last longer too. They don’t sharpen down quickly and they don’t break as often. Elmer’s glue holds better and dries quicker than other brands and it lasts longer. Those things last longer so you don’t have to spend more money replacing those brands that we do not recommend. I know it seems like it is a big ask, but we really appreciate it when you buy those items for your child to use.

I would say that for 90% of the items you have mentioned, there is no noticeable difference other than brand. I have off-brand glue that I got years ago that my kids still use. I’ve seen no difference between how often Ticonderoga pencils break vs a one cent pack I picked up ages ago. And a difference in crayons? There is none.

I used to go strictly by the list. Then my kid told me that not all of the other moms go by the brand name list. 🙂

ours asks for all name brand as well. I used to wonder why but I work in a preschool now and elmer’s glue last better, Crayola crayons draw better, ticonderoga pencils sharpen better. You kind of wonder why but they do all work better. I buy all name brand for my kids and that’s coming from someone who LOVES off brand everything because it’s cheaper.

    • Walkwright1

Thank you!!! Those brand named items last much longer and are more durable.

Safety is also an issue. With off brands you run a big risk of getting lead and heavy metals literally in the hands of the little ones. If I wouldn’t buy it for my granddaughter I don’t buy it to donate.

      Thank you so much!

My school doesn’t ask for anything. They even give us supplies when school begins. But since I am part of H2S, I still buy and donate

I’ve been teaching preschool and kindergarten for 12 years – please only buy Crayola and Elmer’s for your kids/teacher! If budget is an issue, maybe get less than what is requested. Same goes for play-doh brand. You will spend more money in the long run with the off brands – the quality is awful. One box of Crayola crayons will last 4x as long as the off brand, I promise?

When talking Crayola vs RoseArt I agree go for Crayola but I bought these Up & Up crayons last year to test for myself because I am a crayon snob and I have to say these were comparable. They are not an exact match but I buy them for our house and feel comfortable sending them to school was well. We have also used Up & Up glue sticks for several years now.

Hey our teachers need laundry detergent… You got it! You need brand name… You got it! When my kids hit school age there will be no complaining here from this household. You are molding and shaping my child as well as others for a lifetime, it starts from this young age. If all your asking for is simple brand name supplies I will doy best to get them to you for our children to thrive. No question about it, you are the heroes that shouldn’t worry about that.
