Expecting holiday packages? If you’re one of the over 185 million people that decided to shop online this holiday season, your orders may be delayed as UPS recently announced a halt in collecting orders from select major retailers including GAP, Nike, and Macy’s after too many packages exceeded their delivery capacity.

What does this mean? For one, all those holiday gifts you ordered on Black Friday and Cyber Monday might be delayed, however, UPS stated that all packages would be delivered as soon as possible.

With more people shopping online this holiday season due to the Coronavirus pandemic, both UPS and FedEx have asked major retailers to spread out their promotions as much as possible as they are being stretched too thin.

This also means the earlier you shop this year, the better your chances will be at getting your packages in time for the holiday so try to get all of your holiday orders in before December 21st which is the last week before Christmas!

I’ve seen the delays myself and feel so bad for the driver. I received a package last night at 10.15pm. felt so bad for our drivers he’s such a friendly person, always say hi to our kids when they playing outside.

    • Sam

My UPS driver fiance has been working 14 hour days … getting home at 1130pm – hes doing his best!

    • Jill

I don’t blame the drivers, I know they are doing the best they can. I question UPS management and Corporate personnel. How could they not foresee this happening? They should have realized months ago that more people than ever were going to be ordering online and using their services.

I am sure there were plenty of unemployed healthy young people that would have loved to make good money before the Holidays.

UPS is acting like it hadn’t occurred to them demand would be higher than ever expected.

I 100% saw this happening which is why I stayed buying in October this year!

Done with my Christmas shopping thank goodness. My husband is a UPS driver and we hardly even see him this time of year. With covid it’s been even worse and has pretty much been peak hours since Covid started. Be kind to your drivers please. Yes they chose that profession, but this time of year is hard on them, never seeing their kids and families, and physically and mentally exhausted. A snack or drink left out for them goes a long way. They know which houses have snacks out and look forward to them greatly.

    • JMonte509

I definitely agree. It never hurts to try an give back. This has been a very hard year and without essential workers like your husband Christmas wouldn’t be happening for a lot of families. Happy Holidays to y’all from Texas. Thank him for his hard work!

    • Carlene

We appreciate our delivery drivers so much! We started putting out snacks last Christmas but then just kept it up through the year. I’m always looking for suggestions on what they like best. Love the printable from Hip2Save…sure saves time not having to design one myself.

    • willowcat

I try to leave out bottled water when I know there are deliveries coming – same for Instacart etc. Nice to know it helps, so thanks. Good luck to you and your family!

UPS is the only one on time for me! EVERY Amazon Prime delivery is running late and they are delivering at 10pm! I feel terrible when I see them driving around that late.

thank yall for being so kind and supportive of UPS. My husband is a driver and honestly, we haven’t seen him much since March. They are working 6 days a week in our town. We are so thankful for his job and all of the ways UPS takes care of our family….but it wears on us so to see this kindness in this thread is so wonderful. Thank you!!!

  6. JMonte509

I always leave snacks and drinks for my delivery drivers. I only shop online now and they are frequently leaving packages. I like to show them I appreciate the hard work they do by leaving a snack/drink for them. I had one driver say thank you so much because she was hungry and didn’t have time to stop at all. It never hurts to give back a little.

I remember one year when I was younger FedEx showed up at our house around 7:45 on Christmas Eve. It was documents that could have waited for a few more days, and that has always stuck with me. That driver not being at home with his family. And for that very reason, I have always tried to not have anything delivered in December. My goal each year is to be done with all shopping & shipping by December 1st. I don’t always succeed, but I try!

    • Tina Tina

Wow, that’s very thoughtful of you!

  8. nancypantcy

I try to think twice before ordering every little thing off Amazon etc. These delivery guys seem to be working non stop and I really feel for them and their families.

  9. Cat

Remember, many stores have curbside pick-up! It’s fairly quick and easy!

  10. ashley-29

I’m a ups delivery person and it means the world to get those little snacks. One person even had hand sanitizer! Thank you for the kind words and gestures. Our days are long and hard right now but we are happy to get everyone all there packages!

    • saver

Love seeing female drivers out there, thank you so much

      • Jennifer b

What kind of snacks do you enjoy most i would like to do this but not sure what to leave

        • ashley-29

Small bags of chips, cracker packs, candy bars.

      • ashley-29

Aww thank you! I love doing the job and seeing people smile when we show up

My husband did a virtual interview for UPS. We were both shocked that in a major Texas city they were offering $14 an hour. Target pays $15 and I’m sure UPS is a lot more back breaking for less pay. They’d probably have a lot more accepting jobs if they upped their pay.

    • Tina Tina

It must not have been a permanent driver position. Drivers start over $20 an hour and increase to over $30 an hour by year 4.

    • Sam

Same – my fiance makes 30+ an hour – and the OT money is nuts right now (not entirely worth the hours and exhaustion but it helps)

    • L

They also get free full time health benefits (good ones at that) for even the part timers which Target does not provide. Pension for now too. Long term, UPS will always be the superior option even if starting out at the $14/hr part time.

Those of you who leave treats and snacks…what do you leave and how do you ensure nothing gets frozen in the winter or snatched by wild animals (specifically like possums, raccoons, stray cats, etc.? We live in the country in Indiana so between animals and the freezing temps (at times) I’m unsure what to leave!

    • mommyof51987

I usually leave granola bars, water etc. can you put them in a cooler or box that critters can’t get to. With a sign for the drivers.

    • Kim

Ashley, I have been leaving snacks out for several years now, and by far the favorite thing with all the drivers seems to be the individually wrapped beef jerky sticks, and the meat/cheese stick combo. I always have mini candy bars and granola bars as well, but they don’t take those nearly as often. And although I leave water bottles out, they almost never take those. I think they don’t like to stop for bathroom breaks 🙂

Hi Hip2Save. Would you please repost the delivery printable so we can help take care of delivery workers? Here in NM, we are still pretty shut down so we rely on these workers. Thanks for y’all. We appreciate you ❤️🥰.

  14. C

@H2S the news last night said that for USPS if you want a package or card guaranteed to delivered by Christmas first class or regular mail needs to be shipped out by the 18th and priority mail by the 19th!!! (Which is a lot longer than the normal 2 day shipping for priority in the lower 48)

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks a bunch for sharing, C!

  15. Nanette

I live in the mountains so we get a lot delivered from UPS & FEDEX. We have a small fridge loaded with a variety of drinks so we always ask the drivers, “What’s your poison today?” LOL. FedEx driver is always a Monster energy drink and UPS is Sprite. They’re always so grateful. I never thought to leave snacks. Now I’m going to make up a snack/drink basket for the days we’re not home.

  16. willowcat

Hey, H2S – Could you keep an extra sharp eye out for snack deals to keep our driver baskets full? Thank you! Unemployed right now…

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

We sure will! Did you see this deal? I am still seeing automatic savings at checkout if you want to look.

  17. Ann S

My family has covid…and we were planning on leaving goodies for our drivers this year…but that seems foolish now!!! Any ideas on how we might be able to encourage them? Safely???

  18. Sarah

My husband is a full time UPS Driver and I work there seasonally as a helper coordinator. I know our building is working Saturdays to stay ahead of schedule but in our area it’s USPS that is behind. As a delivery driver last year, I will attest that the snack and drink baskets were greatly appreciated. People put little bags of crackers or cookies, trail mix and even little cans of soda. We pack so much water that a little treat was so uplifting and got me through the rest of my day.

    • Imsofrugal

A lot of UPS, FedEx and Amazon packages are left for the USPS carriers to deliver. That’s why they’re really behind, not to mention all of the election mail they still have to deliver for run offs. My carrier would normally come around 2:00, but now it’s more like 5-6:00.

This post made my whole week! I’m a UPS driver and I so appreciate each and everyone of you that appreciate us! I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas 🎄

  20. Sally

I believe all online orders will be delayed from any store. Not just UPS
If you order anything from China, it will be so delayed you will never receive it.

  21. Rebe

I am a teacher who delivers for Amazon Flex whenever I have a couple free hours. I can not tell you enough how much I LOVE when people leave snacks. Oftentimes I pick extra hours on the go and run out of water or a little snack to keep me going. I have seen people leave granola bars, small bags of chips, individual packets of gummy bears, small chocolate bars, water bottles, etc. I love it when it comes with a note, I usually write something back on it instead of taking it. I have received DD $5 gift cards too but that is really going above and beyond. Thanks Hip2save community for being so kind! 🙂

  22. Moni

Thank you to everyone for ordering online, thanks to You I have a job that is giving me extra hours, now that my husband off work.

  23. Colleen

Just got notice that my FedEx delivery is going to be 2-3 days longer. Ordered on 11-30.
