Last time they ran this freebie I picked it up. It made my dog really sick. I had mixed it in with our current food and for the first couple days didn’t know why he kept puking then I remembered the new food. I got rid of all the food I had mixed with this and the problem was solved. So weird though because I’ve switched his food multiple times always just making sure to mix some for awhile first and we’ve never had this experience. I’d be interested in knowing if others had a similar experience, if I got a bad batch, or if it’s just my dog.

Are you the same person that posted about this last time on the Sport Dog recall? I’m just curious because I’m wondering if now you’re the second person that has said that or if you were the same person! I was the one that commented that both of my dogs did not seem interested in the food at all unless I mixed it with cheese or noodles something else to make it more appealing… but it made me wonder too!

      • Beth

Yes, I did ask it in there but never got notified of any replies. I see someone else on this post says it gave their dog diarrhea. I see someone else wondered about outright switching, but I didn’t do that. I mixed it in. My dog has just never had issues with anything. Isn’t a scarfer and doesn’t puke after eating and he was so sick after this. I’m just really curious if others have experienced the same thing.

Honestly, if you read dog food reviews online there are usually at least a few negative reviews like this for just about every brand/formula. When you see a pattern in a short period of time that’s usually a sign that something may be wrong for a specific batch.
I recently slowly switched my dogs to a new food. It did not agree with one of them at all. He generally switches seamlessly between foods(he has never had this reaction before), but this food gave him horrible gas and diarrhea. I could chalk it up to a bad bag of food if it was not for the fact that my other dog is eating the same food and has none of those issues. I switched the one with GI issues over to different food and he is back to normal. It can be hard to know for sure. I have fed this brand before and my dogs all did well on it.

Thanks for posting this deal. We are set on dog food now. I’ll probably pick up a bag and drop it off in one of the rescue donation boxes near the front of the store.

Hmm we have three dogs they normally eat acana brand food and they seemed to like this food we just mixed it…I have heard however that outright switching your dogs food can make them sick so maybe that’s what happened?

    • Danielle

You are correct! You never want to add in or change up your dogs food without a slow transition. You should mix 3/4 of the old food with 1/4 of the new food-feed it for 3-4 days, then go half and half with both foods for another 3-4 days, then 1/4 of the old food-3/4 of the new food for 3-4 days, before finally switching completely to the new food. It is not an overnight process: I’ve been a vet tech at 3 different animal hospitals and that was always the recommendation with every veterinarian I worked with.

i got one bag last time for my dog, and it caused her serious diarrhea obviously….

  4. Angela L Abell

love this dog food! All three dogs love it! High quality and I got the free bag today!

  5. PW

Did this last time. Did not agree with my dog. Threw it away. Now using Canidae Pure (excluded from coupon) with no issues.

  6. Darla

What size is the kibble?? My dog has a little mouth😊 and only eat little kibble. I’m going to get it though even if it’s large but I can donate it without opening it. Thanks Hip2Save!

    • Danielle

This kibble is small. I would say slightly larger than an eraser on a pencil. Hope this helps!

  7. Doreen

My dog has no problem with Canidae food. If you are giving your dog new food you always should mix it with the old food that you give him or she so he or she can get used to it.

  8. melissast

My dogs do great on Canidae Pure fwiw.

  9. Bree Me

I tried donating and our shelters only accepted a specific brand not this one. I also tried donating a huge bag of food I got from Walmart with a bunch of pictures on it claiming it helps dogs live into their 20s. I couldn’t donate that because the bag had been opened. I can kind of understand that part, but it didn’t agree with my dog and I didn’t want to just waste it. It would be great if more shelters posted exactly what they take and also have a way to post open food items in the event that a pet parent in need could use it.

    • C

You can always contact a rescue/shelter. Our local animal control has some sort of contract with a major food company so they don’t need dry food. They do accept wet food. If you donate dry food they give it out to adopters and fosters. Some of the rescues in my area provide information(often on their website or Facebook) about the foods they prefer, but I know a few of them will accept and feed most brands. Most of them will not accept open bags, though.
You could probably find somebody that would be happy to take an open bag of food for their own dogs. Especially now with so many people out of work. Maybe post online or even leave a little note at your local dog park?

    • Monique

Here’s an idea For your open bag of I keep quart sized dog food bags in my car and will give them to the local homeless with pets πŸ™‚

    • Will K.

@Bree Me – Just so you know… food pantries like Salvation Army, churches and other food donation organizations will typically take donated/salvaged pet food. The Salvation Army food pantry I volunteer at here in Northern Illinois (5yrs & counting) gladly takes in pet food… opened or unopened doesn’t matter, so long as the pet food is not wet food that’s been opened/is highly perishable or is food that’s severely expired. They’ll gladly take it and distribute it to those with pets that have fallen on hard times! πŸ™‚

  10. Joanne

can I use the coupon on line?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Joanne! This is valid in store only.

  11. Lisa

For those looking to donate, you can also see if your local animal shelter has a pet food bank or if your local food bank provides pet food. During this time when many people are struggling with food insecurity, the demand for pet food has also greatly increased.

  12. lauriejack

so my local Petco never rec’d their shipment and maynot. I was only able to get a free bag last time cuz someone returned their bag. My dogs loved it but then they eat anything. I’m going to contact corp to see why do they issue a coupon but then dont have the supply in the store to honor it.

  13. Tracy

Is anyone else having trouble with this link?

    • Ola

Yes. The link just takes me to the petco site but not the coupon.

      • Chelsey (Hip Sidekick)

Bummer, it looks like they expired the coupon early. Thanks for letting us know!

  14. Joannab

Yes, dies not work for me

  15. Will K

Wow, they pulled the coupon quick and I wasn’t able to save/print a copy fast enough :'( If I recall correctly, the coupon doesn’t actually expire until February 1st or 2nd (?) so if someone can maybe post the original or provide a link to the original, that would be awesome/Thx! πŸ™‚
