Mattel PlayBack

Let’s talk trash and how to responsibly dispose of unwanted Mattel toys!

As part of Mattel’s ongoing commitment to sustainability efforts, they are launching their NEW PlayBack Program for United States and Canadian consumers. Created to better manage the environmental impact of their products, this program makes it easy to recycle Barbie, Matchbox, and Mega brand toys, versus having them end up in landfills.

While these are currently the only three brands that can be recycled, other brands will be added in the future.

This program is all part of Mattel’s initiative to make all their toys and packaging either 100% recycled, recyclable, or constructed from bio-based plastic materials by 2030.

To participate in PlayBack program, all you have to do is print a free shipping label and then pack up any participating toys that your children have outgrown and mail them back to Mattel. They will then be responsibly recycled or processed into energy.

A lot if these old toys are collectible and worth money. Better to see if you can sell them and if not worth anything then mail them back to them. Just a thought. 💭🗯🗨

I was thinking the same. I got an offer $497 for my car. Yet online they sell for $10,000.
I wonder what they do with pharmacuticals they recycle. I heard few really expire.

    😳 Or donate to a local nursery/preschool.

As a former preschool teacher I know they would greatly appreciate donated toys! I spent my own money to get my kids new toys for Christmas and preschool teachers make barely above minimum wage. Please consider this if you’re looking to find a new home for those toys

great idea – that is what we did – I donated many things to our son’s special needs preschool. Another idea for others reading this post is to also call an area shelters…sometimes they too are in need of toy donations. Thank you for your post encouraging local donation ideas Bethapple.

Easier to donate lbvs, but kudos to them for trying!

And by recycling them they can then make more money…. thanks but no thanks…I’ll keep passing along toys as my kids outgrow them instead or donating locally

It looks like you can donate your broken toys, too, but only the ones listed. It’s better than throwing them away.
