Doorstep with Amazon boxes

Have you heard that Amazon may be opening department stores?

While they’ve already been operating a number of physical store locations for a little while now, rumor has it that Amazon is now opening department stores, which will be their biggest locations yet!

Amazon is the largest online retailer in the US, and as an effort to increase their presence in the brick-and-mortar retail scene, they’ll reportedly be opening several experimental department stores in the Ohio and California areas according to the Wall Street Journal.

They’re expected to be smaller than many department stores we’re familiar with (think Macy’s, Nordstrom, etc.) which are typically around 100,000 square feet. Although we’re expecting the space to be closer to only 30,000 square feet, that’s still much larger than any of the physical Amazon stores operating currently!

An Amazon go physical storefront

It’s still too early to be sure exactly what Amazon will be selling in the rumored department stores, but we can assume they’ll offer a variety of goods including clothing, appliances, electronic items, and more, with a focus on their Amazon-exclusive labels.

It might seem like an odd choice to open department stores when in-person shopping rates have been declining, although some analysts say they’re confident in Amazon’s ability to adapt to a changing retail landscape.

Considering a lot of the information surrounding Amazon’s plans for department stores is rumored, we unfortunately can’t quite tell when the stores are expected to open. Until then, you can still shop at Amazon’s existing physical stores or, of course, buy online!

Isn’t the best thing about the convenience of having your items dropped off on your doorstep? I wouldn’t want to go to a store.

I believe the main reason anyone would want to go to the store vs. online would be to try on clothes or shoes as fit can really vary according to brand.
