Frozen Shrimp Recall – Sold at Whole Foods, Food Lion & Meijer
The FDA has expanded its ongoing recall of frozen shrimp products from Avanti Frozen Foods due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected products include cooked, peeled, and deveined frozen shrimp sold in pouches and trays of various sizes, with or without cocktail sauce.
The FDA first issued a recall of Avanti shrimp products in June, after six people were thought to have contracted salmonella from the company’s shrimp. Now, nine people in four states — Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, and Rhode Island, have fallen ill.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Most people recover from salmonella without treatment in a week or less, but young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems could face more serious sickness requiring hospitalization. There have been no deaths connected with this recall according to the CDC, but three people have been hospitalized.
The recalled shrimp were packaged under brand names like Censea, Hannaford, Open Acres, Waterfront Bistro, Honest Catch, Chicken of the Sea, 365, Meijer, and more. These products were sold at major retailers such as Food Lion, Meijer, and other grocery stores between November 2020 and May 2021.
Contaminated shrimp may have also been sold at Target’s Mai Sushi counters in California and at Whole Foods’ Genji Sushi counters, also in California. A detailed list of the affected products can be seen here. Consumers who have any of these products are urged not to consume them and should instead return them to the point of purchase.
