This is my favorite book. It has everything! I mean it. There is enough information to get you started and feel informed. I think everyone should have a copy of this manual for just about everything self-sufficiency-related. Not only is it useful, but it is also fun to read and dream!

I’m getting into self sufficiency and homesteading, which means lots of reading. I could have saved so much money on books if I had started with this one. This book starts with how to pick out land. Then moves onto digging a well and BUILDING AN ENTIRE HOUSE AND BARN by hand. Then there’s the section on growing and raising your food, plus how to preserve and cook with it (including meats and dairy products). Then useful things for the house like candle making, soap making, herbal remedies, sewing, weaving, quilting, and so on. Then theres a nice overview of various ways of cooking with wood. Then theres whole sections of woodworking and smithing. It shows you how to make the tools and furniture you need for your house. It wraps up with square dancing, games and toys for children, and stories of our holidays (with holiday recipes). Far exceeded my expectations. This book is now one of my prized possessions.
