FDA Recommends Avoiding Certain Baby Formulas Due to Bacteria Concerns
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating four claims across three states that have been made about infections caused by certain baby formulas. The formulas being investigated were produced by Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, who is providing more information about this recall on their website.
Abbott is voluntarily recalling select products after four consumer complaints related to Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in infants who had consumed powder infant formula. The FDA recommends parents be cautious when they’re purchasing formula manufactured in the Sturgis, Michigan facility.
Specifically, the FDA recommends families avoid using Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare powdered infant formulas under these conditions:
- First two digits of the code are 22 through 37
- Code on the container contains K8, SH or Z2
- Expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later
Note that the products that do not have these factors are not compromised.
Three of the infections reported were caused by Cronobacter, which is a bacteria that causes inflation or infection of membranes that protect the brain and spine that could be life-threatening. The other was Salmonella, which causes fever and indigestion.
“As this is a product used as the sole source of nutrition for many of our nation’s newborns and infants, the FDA is deeply concerned about these reports of bacterial infections. We want to reassure the public that we’re working diligently with our partners to investigate complaints related to these products, which we recognize include infant formula produced at this facility, while we work to resolve this safety concern as quickly as possible.” – Frank Yiannas, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response

I just find this so scary! My daughter had to use the alimentum , she is luckily 2 now and no longer using formula. It really makes you think about these companies you trust to make safe quality products, how safe are they actually? Ugh.
What a mess! My 8 month old grandson is on this. Just checked and all of his is bad. Called pediatrician and she said a lot of parents have called her today, plus all her samples are bad so she made a few suggestions. But, my grandson was hospitalized back in December with salmonella and a stomach bug (at 6 months old) and the pediatrician is now thinking this is what happened to him. His mom (my daughter) was asked to file a complaint through the FDA website so there is a record of his case. I know recalls are always happening but this infuriates me when it affects helpless babies! So, mom is out now souring stores for some good formula before his dinner bottle is needed.
Check your free samples too. All of mine are recalled too.
Yes! Good tip!
Mine too
My daughter an I just drove over a hour to get my grandsons formula none in the area where we live ! Thank god target carries their brand $20 for a huge container seeing as she is on wic ! This is horrible to think their are parents that can’t find the formula for their baby !!
How do you get reimbursed? What about affected sample containers? Can’t take those to the store for a trade. I signed up through Similac website but haven’t gotten a response.
I would call this number on their page for more questions: 1-800-986-8540 ❤
