Knots are “knot” hair goals! 😬
If you experience tears and battles when brushing/combing your kiddo’s hair (or even your own!), you have got to try this easy & super cheap DIY hair detangler spray that uses items you probably already have at home!
Brushing my daughter’s hair is quite a struggle since it’s getting so long.
I love to brush her hair, but unfortunately, it’s not her favorite part of the day because, like many other kids, her head is so sensitive and her thin hair gets tangled so easily… that is until I discovered a way to make affordable hair detangler spray that actually works!
To make your DIY hair detangler all you’ll need is a spray bottle, hair conditioner, some hot water, and a whisk to blend it all together.
You’ll only need 2 tablespoons of your favorite conditioner to make the perfect hair detangler solution which will fill up about an 8-ounce bottle. To easily measure your conditioner, lightly tap your measuring spoon on the edge on your bowl to level it out.
Looking for the best conditioner to use for hair detangling spray?
I love the TotLogic Kid conditioner in the Lavender Bliss scent. It’s on the pricier side compared to other brands ($12.95 for an 8 oz. bottle), but I love that ALL TotLogic products are hypoallergenic and free of sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, and parabens — so it’s totally worth it to spend a little bit extra. They’re also vegan and cruelty-free – and smells amazing! 🙌
Even better, this entire bottle of conditioner will make about 8 or more bottles of DIY hair detangler. 😱 That’s only about $1.61 for my DIY, and that’ almost $8 cheaper than the last bottle of hair detangler I bought (and it didn’t even work that great).
While we’re on the topic of products I love…
This special spray bottle is a MUST for DIY hair products.
I have to just take a minute to feature this spray bottle I found on Amazon. While any spray bottle should suffice for this DIY hair detangler, I especially love this bottle which is specifically made for hair products and can handle thicker solutions.
Unlike you’re average spray bottle though, this Beautify Beauties one produces a light mist all over your hair, rather than a condensing spray in just one area. Until I made this hair detangler, I had never used a bottle like this, but I can’t imagine ever going back because I’m that impressed. I also feel like because it mists all over with just one squirt, I will get the most out of my products.
Now it’s time to spray & brush!
With just a couple of sprays to coat all of my daughter’s hair, we made it through hair brushing time with NO tears! Wow, I can’t tell you how good that feels and I know she feels even better with her little head not hurting.
I have tried a lot of hair detanglers in the past and none of them work even close to as good as this DIY. The best part is that it’s even cheaper than buying already made detangler at the store or online! Win!

Check out my daughter’s before and after! 😍
Bonus Tip: If your little one has long hair, you can put two braids in it before they go to bed. This will help limit bedhead and those troublesome bird’s nests that get all tangled up when they wake up. As another bonus, my daughter enjoys taking them out in the morning because it gives her hair a little crimped curl, which she loves!
My daughter and I love using these towels when we wash our hair.
