This special day is all about thanking the brand’s fans. This year the owners want you to know just how much they appreciate your patronage and they aim to give away over 1 million free scoops of ice cream! 🍦
From 12 pm to 8 pm local time today, April 3rd only, customers can get in line as many times as they wish and choose any flavor they want to try – no purchase necessary! Spring for a classic Vanilla or perhaps try the newest taste called Lights! Camera! Action!, a flavor released in collaboration with award-winning director and producer, Ava DuVernay.
Your local Scoop Shop might even add its own spin to the tradition. Many stores are pairing up with local non-profits in hopes of bringing awareness to community issues. Visit your local Ben & Jerry’s to snag a yummy treat and connect with your community members.
What’s the history behind FREE Cone Day?
Are you curious why such a large company would dish out delicious ice cream for FREE? According to a recent press release, it’s actually a yearly tradition that started 40 years ago, during Ben & Jerry’s first year of business in 1979. That year, Vermont saw an extremely cold winter, one that might turn consumers off from eating a chilly treat. However, Ben & Jerry’s local community showed them support and the ice cream company not only survived but thrived.
To celebrate their first year in business, owners Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield decided to thank their community by serving as much free ice cream as they could churn out. After that day, FREE Cone Day became a yearly tradition and one that ice cream fans around the world look forward to celebrating.
