bowl of apple dump cake

Looking for a delicious way to use up fresh apples?

Cut them up and try baking this super easy apple dump cake that uses just three main ingredients! Dump cakes are some of the easiest dessert recipes around because essentially you’re are just using a box of cake mix and a melted stick of butter to dump over fruit!

There really are so many fruit versions you could try, and this apple version is a perfect fall dessert to make for the family!

Once baked, the butter caramelizes over the cake mix and fruit to create a gooey warm cake-like dessert that is magical especially when topped with some vanilla ice cream! The cinnamon apples are perfectly soft, while the yellow cake is sweet and browns nicely at the top.

Tips for making the BEST apple dump cake:

    • I used red gala apples, and it turned out delish. I am sure you could use other similar varieties instead.
    • It’s an optional step to peel the apples. We have made it both ways and decided that we love the texture better peeled. I have an inexpensive stainless steel kitchen peeler like this one that works great for apples.
    • The water from the apples should soak in with the cake mix but if you’re noticing the cake mix isn’t completely cooking, just sprinkle a little water over those areas and put back in the oven.
    • I think this dessert tastes best when served warm with vanilla ice cream. The reheated leftovers are delicious as well.

I love this yummy mash-up of apple pie and yellow cake!

This is a simple dessert that my family loved and is so easy my now older kids can make by themselves even! We love clever cake mix hacks like this. Another perk – it makes the house smell amazing and so comforting!

  2. Kristina

I also add pineapple the best

  3. Kristina

I mean I do mine with cherries and pineapple

  4. Jenna

My family has made the cherry and pineapple dumpcake for 30 years! I also like it with apples, peaches, or pumpkin.

    • Heather C

Yes, mine too- they are a family birthday favorite & so EASY to make 😋

  5. Steph

    Mmmm!

  6. Des

Looks scrumptious. I want to try this tonight but I only have yellow cake mix in the house and it’s too cold to go back out. Do you think it would still turn our really good?

    • Tia

It calls for yellow cake mix. What ingredient are you missing?

  7. K3llyb

I didn’t like it the next day or after. It’s just not good as it sits and the apples let out some juice and turns the cake mix part to a gluey texture. The canned fruit actually fairs better in this kind of recipe. Considering how expensive real butter is you can sub it out of this recipe since the cake mix overwhelms any sense of butter flavor.

I’ve only made dump cake with cherry pie filling before. My local Grocery Outlet has canned cherries on sale and I wondered if they would work, but if you can make it with fresh fruit, I don’t see why not. They also have peaches on sale. I can’t wait to try them. I love dump cake. It tastes like a special desert, but is so easy peasy.

  9. Sammy

Dumb question but do u sprinkle the cake mix raw or with the oil, egg and mix as u would ordinarily make a cake. Dumb question I know lol

    • Richelle

Not a dumb question. Just the cake mix not the other ingredients to make the cake. 🙂 this is so yummy. Good luck.

      • Sammy

        Thank u!!!

        • Mona

I had the same question! Thanks Sammy for asking it and thanks Richelle for answering it 🙂

    • Hip mom

Thank you Sammy for asking this question because otherwise I would have mixed all the things (eggs, oil …) 🙂

  10. Catie

I bet this would be good with a spice cake mix!

    • Nancy

I’ve done it with spice cake before and it is still delicious.

  11. terri

You specifically mention yellow cake mix..I only have white…what would that do to the flavor, if anything?

  12. Leslie

I’m going to try this with gluten free cake mix soon! Yay!!!

  13. Danielle

We have the exact same thing for our Bean Pots @ Celebrating Home (that we call “Apple Crisp”), but it’s for the microwave and only takes 13-15 minutes!!! It’s soooo yummy! I froze cherries about a month ago. Does anyone know if they’ll work? If so, should I let them thaw out first?

  15. Jamie

Do you need to peel the apples?
