Easy Shamrock Pretzel closeup

Shamrock and roll!

Who doesn’t love St Patrick’s Day? It’s a fun reminder that we’re inching ever forward into Spring – and we’re sharing these cute Shamrock Pretzels that take just four ingredients and a few minutes to make! They’re something fun to create with the kids and taste yummy, too!

But first, a little about St. Patrick’s Day:

Patrick was a 5th-century Irish priest whose legendary efforts included his driving the “snakes” out of Ireland. Over the following centuries, as many legends grew up around Patrick, he became Ireland’s foremost saint. Tradition holds he passed away on March 17, which is the day we celebrate now.

Traditions surrounding St. Patrick’s Day include corned beef, leprechauns, and clovers (sacred Irish plants symbolizing the rebirth of spring). Four-leaf clovers are also considered symbols of good luck! 🍀

Some quick tips for this fun & easy Shamrocks Pretzel Treats recipe:

  • Going gluten-free? Gluten-free pretzels abound thanks to brands like Glutino. Look for their rods and their twists for a healthy take on the original recipe.
  • You can use green Skittles in place of green M&Ms.
  • Make sure to use parchment paper since waxed paper melts.

Hip Tip: If you want to be extra smarty pants this year, let people know the color traditionally associated with St. Paddy’s day was BLUE and not Green! Green didn’t rise to prominence until the late 1700s when the “Wearing Of the Green” spread, thanks to poems and ballads written during this time.

That said, if you choose to use blue candies M&Ms for this recipe, be prepared to don your History Channel monocle. 🧐

Love this! My kids will be excited to have another baking project to compliment their school work. We baked a PI pizza today to go along with their math and we can end the week by making shamrocks to go with their St. Patty’s Day study. What a fun week!

  7. MARIA CHERNEVA

Would that work with kisses chocolate?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes I believe so. Great idea!

    • Heather

It definitely works with kisses. I make something called belly button kisses with a waffle pretzel, Hershey kiss and the M & M.

    • kellyfornia

I use the Hershey Hugs (white and chocolate striped kisses). They seem to melt better than the regular kisses for some reason, imo. (And I think they taste better)

  8. Danielle

I just finished making a bunch of these for my sons’ class parties tomorrow. Easy and adorable!! I’m certain they will be a hit! Thanks!! 😃☘️

  13. M

So Cute! Does the chocolate keep the pretzels together? Thanks so much!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yep! It melts a little and then sets up to dry 👍

  14. Marylynn

I made these last year and they were a bit hit!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh thanks for sharing!

  15. Steph

Cute! Is there any reason using a WIlton Candy melt disk instead of the rolo wouldn’t work? Thanks!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

No, I think that’s a fun idea too! Thanks for sharing!

  16. Josie

Love these! Also, thanks so much to those that added tips. So helpful!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh good! Thanks Josie!

  17. Josie

Oh, almost forgot! I had my kids make a little house for a leprechaun to visit. We just used a medium sized box. They decorated it and even made furniture for it. They painted it and made it adorable. At night they put it out and each night wrote to the leprechaun. I replied to their letters each evening, so that when they awoke they’d receive an answer. Sometimes the leprechaun left little treats. Every night I had fun writing to them and watching them read those letters. They were completely engaged in something other than t.v. or the internet, and it was more than great for them to use their own imaginations.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh that is so cute and creative!! Thanks for sharing 😍

  18. Kristin

Any suggestions for buying M&Ms that are all green? Are those available online? Hmm, or maybe they’re not hard to find in the store this time of year…

    • Jamie

I bought some Dark chocolate mint M&Ms that were all shades of green. Found them at the grocery store.

      • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh fun – thanks for sharing!

  19. Donna

Cannot wait to make these for the office! If you are making these the day before do you need to put them in the freezer? If you must do you refrigerate them after? Thanks!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I think they would be fine in the fridge or covered on the counter if the room isn’t super hot. Great question!

  20. Theresa Satterfield

    Hi,

I want I want to serve these as dessert for St Patrick’s Day party and I’m wondering how far in advance I can make these pretzel shamrock. if anyone knows I sure would appreciate a text back

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I think up to a couple days should be fine! Maybe store in a covered container in the fridge so they don’t melt.

  21. Jess

I found it a little easier to cut the rolos in half. Great idea! Using them for a friends st. st. Patty’s day party.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh thanks for the tip Jess!
