How to cook dried beans from Hip2Save

Need a quick refresher on how to cook dried beans? Check out this post which outlines the easy steps you need to follow! With the rising cost of meat, cooking your own beans is such a frugal way to incorporate low fat protein and fiber into recipes. A can of beans averages about $1.29 and produces just 1.5 cups; in contrast, you can prepare about 6 cups of cooked beans for an average cost of $1.39. That is a HUGE savings![/h2s_box]

I hope your life gets happier, Kitty. Maybe a gym visit to blow off some steam followed by a healthy meal?

      • Andrea

        You’re not helping, either, Em.

Mmm I could live off black beans

<— vegetarian with food allergies. I'm LOVING all these! Also, everyone, take a note from India – beans and chickpeas/lentils (chana) are used to make flour substitutes ALL THE TIME. High in protein and bake/fry up VERY nicely. Don't be afraid of the brownie recipe because it sounds bizarre, bean flours are VERY common!

I made the empanadas before they are awesome. I always make dry beans. Another good one that is cheaper and better taste is making your own refried beans using dry pinto beans. So simple to make with none of that extra stuff they put in the canned kind.

I’m going to try to make the black bean burger soon. Looks good.

Thanks for the recipes! We get Black beans on WIC and I never thought to use them for brownies or burgers…so creative!

Glad to see your post. My mother made some salsa, so I made the other ingredients and it turned out to be a chipotle kind of day:). It was a happy Friday!

Where is the best place to purchase dry black beans? Sams only sells a huge bucket but our local supermarket seems a bit overpriced. It’s cheaper to get canned at Aldi…is there a good online merchant?

I just picked up a bag of black beans from dollar tree! Made about 5 cups when cooked

Thank you for smmarizing the recipes here, so I do not have to go try to find them in each daily post. I think I will try half recipe of the egg burritos and half a recipe of the brownies as a test today. I appreciate some recipes to decrease meat during Lent!

Loved the series of these posts. I printed out the Chiptole recipe and are going to make it for dinner. My family is vegetarian, so I really hope you post more vegetarian recipes like these!
